World Teachers Day is marked by a shortage of teachers.
KARACHI: In honour of World Teachers’ Day, the Aga Khan University Institute for Educational Development (AKU-IED) embraced the UNESCO topic “The Teachers We Need for the Education We Want: The Global Imperative to Reverse the Teacher Shortage.”
Dr. Faisal Bari from the Lahore University of Management Sciences, Dr. Ghazala Siddiqui, the founder and principal of Generation’s School, and Afaq Ahmed, a lecturer with substantial AKU experience, participated in a panel discussion at the event. Dean of AKU-IED Professor Farid Panjwani facilitated the conversation.
Dr. Sulaiman Shahabuddin, president of AKU, sent a special greeting to teachers thanking them for their vital efforts. He stressed the commitment of AKU to developing teachers’ skills in order to support a high-quality educational system in Pakistan. Dr. Shahabuddin stated, “AKU-IED is actively developing and empowering teachers who may significantly favourably impact their pupils through teacher education programmes and professional development efforts. To better the educational system and alleviate the scarcity of qualified teachers, we are working with partners to train 1,000 education fellows for government schools throughout GB.
The panellists talked on the causes, effects, and potential solutions of the teacher shortage. Dr. Bari emphasised the need for a thorough revision of educational policies and argued for the creation of a commission to set the course for the following five to ten years and get the support of political stakeholders to maintain policy continuity.
