President of the United States Joe Biden cautioned that if his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin used a tactical nuclear weapon in Ukraine, it might spell the end of the world. One would think that such a prognosis would prompt swift action to lessen the conflict. However, there is no attempt being taken to remove us from that risk.
Instead, governments on all sides are escalating their threats, militarization, and other policies, which not only increase the possibility of nuclear war but also make it more likely.
NATO started conducting nuclear drills that mimicked the dropping of “tactical” B61 bombs over Europe. Although they are described as normal, these drills are taking place in tandem with Russian exercises. There is perhaps no worse time than this.
These drills ought to have been cancelled as a sign that the West won’t contribute to the escalation of nuclear tensions, given the fears about Armageddon that have been voiced at the highest levels of authority, surely. Instead, our leaders consistently fall short in their efforts to lower the danger.
