Aleem Dar, the esteemed cricket umpire, has officially announced his decision to retire at the conclusion of the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) 2024-25 domestic cricket season. This marks the end of a remarkable career that has spanned nearly a quarter of a century, solidifying his legacy as one of the sport’s most respected officials.
Dar’s journey in cricket began not as an umpire but as a player. He participated in 17 first-class and 18 List-A matches from 1986 to 1988 before transitioning to umpiring in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy in the 1998-99 season. He quickly ascended the ranks, becoming a member of the ICC Elite Panel of Umpires from 2003 to 2023, where he earned recognition for his exceptional player management skills, calm demeanour, and outstanding decision-making.
Throughout his illustrious career, Dar officiated in a staggering 145 Tests, 231 One-Day Internationals (ODIs), 72 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), 5 World T20 matches, 181 first-class games, and 282 List-A matches. His contributions extend beyond mere statistics, as he has become a beloved figure among players and fans alike, noted for his professionalism and respectful approach to the game.
Dar’s excellence on the field has been acknowledged multiple times, as he received the prestigious David Shepherd Trophy for ICC Umpire of the Year three times from 2009 to 2011. This accolade is a testament to his dedication to upholding the highest standards of umpiring and sportsmanship throughout his career.
Reflecting on his decision to retire, Dar shared his sentiments, stating, “Umpiring has been my life for nearly 25 years, and I have cherished the privilege of officiating some of the most iconic matches involving the greatest players of this generation.” He emphasised the honour he felt working alongside some of the finest match officials in the world.
While he plans to step away from officiating, Dar is not entirely leaving the cricketing world. He expressed a desire to focus on his social and charity work, particularly his hospital project and other initiatives that hold significant personal importance. “All great journeys must eventually come to an end, and the time has come for me to focus fully on my social and charity work,” he remarked.
He also acknowledged the support he received from colleagues during his career, stating, “Having achieved almost everything that I had aspired to in umpiring with the unwavering support of my peers and colleagues, I feel it’s the right moment to step aside and allow emerging umpires to shine.”
As he prepares to officiate throughout the current season, Dar has committed to mentoring and supporting the next generation of match officials. “I will always be available to offer guidance to those pursuing a career in this noble profession,” he concluded.
Aleem Dar leaves behind a legacy defined by professionalism, integrity, and a deep love for the game. His retirement signifies the end of an era in cricket umpiring, but his influence will continue through the many umpires he inspired and the charitable initiatives he supports.
With a career filled with remarkable achievements, Aleem Dar has undoubtedly made a lasting impact on the sport of cricket, and his contributions will be remembered for years to come.
