The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) has inaugurated its first Space Applications and Research Centre (SPARC-GB) in Gilgit Baltistan. The centre aims to tackle climate-induced challenges, such as glacier melt and unpredictable weather patterns, which are critical issues for the region.
At the inauguration ceremony, Gilgit Baltistan Chief Minister Gulbar Khan emphasized the importance of the centre in addressing environmental and socio-economic challenges. He highlighted the region’s vulnerability to climate change, particularly glacier melting, which threatens local water resources and communities. Additionally, the region faces natural disasters like landslides, floods, and earthquakes, necessitating advanced monitoring systems.
Suparco Chairman Muhammad Yousuf Khan noted that SPARC-GB would enhance satellite-based monitoring capabilities to address these environmental challenges. The centre will support the local community through employment, capacity building, and development initiatives.
SPARC-GB will focus on critical issues such as climate change, glacier monitoring, landslide risks, and water resource management. It aims to drive innovation and provide cutting-edge solutions to the region’s environmental challenges. The centre will deliver vital data to ensure the resilience and safety of local communities.
In collaboration with the GB government and international research organizations, SPARC-GB will provide technological assistance for disaster management, ecological conservation, and socio-economic development. As part of Suparco’s Space Education and Awareness Drive, the centre aims to inspire young minds with dynamic programs and research opportunities, contributing to both local and global advancements in space technology.
