The first time a prominent social media CEO overtly took a side was when Elon Musk, the new owner of Twitter, urged Americans to elect a Republican Congress in the US midterm elections on Tuesday to balance out President Joe Biden’s Democrats.Musk tweeted to his more than 110 million followers on Monday, “Shared power controls the worst excesses of both parties, so I encourage voting for a Republican Congress, given that the Presidency is Democratic.”
Republicans are expected to win a majority in the House of Representatives in Tuesday’s elections, while neutral election experts have given the Senate a toss-up rating. Both houses are now led by Democrats.The CEO of Tesla and the richest man in the world, Musk, acquired control of Twitter last month in a $44 billion deal. Since then, he has taken extreme steps, including firing half the workers and considering charging for blue check verification marks.
