An ISIS official who was sheltering there on Thursday was killed in a rare US helicopter strike on a town controlled by the government in northeastern Syria, according to two security officials.
The US has conducted prior operations in Syria against ISIS terrorists, but the strike on Thursday would be the first known action in a territory controlled by forces allied with President Bashar al-Assad.
According to Syrian state television’s Telegram channel, early on Thursday, US special forces conducted a rare raid on the government-controlled town of Muluk Saray in the northeastern province of Hasaka.
The report stated that several people were caught and one was killed. Nothing else about their identities was revealed.
Col. Joseph Buccino, spokesman for US Central Command (CENTCOM), informed Al Arabiya English that US soldiers raided a “top ISIS official” overnight on Wednesday.
More facts will be made public after operational specifics are finalised, Buccino stated.
The individual who was slain was an ISIS official sought by the United States, according to two security officials who spoke to Reuters.
“A prominent ISIS leader who was located in the regions under the authority of the Syrian government was the objective of the aerial operation. One of the security sources claimed that it was successful.
