Did you enjoy watching “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar,” the online series directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali? If so, you’ll be happy to hear about a recent development in the popular show.
According to Variety, the show has been given a second season renewal by streaming behemoth Netflix.
The series became the most watched Indian series on Netflix internationally within the first week of its May 1 premiere, dancing its way up the non-English TV worldwide list in 43 countries. Since its debut, the series has held the top slot on the India Top 10 list.
Taking place in the tawaifs’ home area in the Heeramandi region of Lahore, British India, Season 1 of the opulent narrative takes place between 1920 and 1947, when the subcontinent was divided into India and Pakistan. Like the Japanese geisha, tawaifs received music and dance training and were courted by nobles. The manipulative queen of Heeramandi Mallikajaan (Manisha Koirala) and her resentful niece Fareedan (Sonakshi Sinha) are at the core of the show.
The program also stars Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Shaikh, Aditi Rao Hydari, Fardeen Khan, Shekhar Suman, and Taha Shah Badussha.
Regarding the show’s expansion, Bhansali remarked, “A series requires a lot of work. It has required a lot of work. I have been working nonstop since February 2022, when “Gangubai” (Berlinale title: “Gangubai Kathiawadi”) was launched. Thus, the series bears a great deal of responsibility,” Bhansali said to Variety.
“Now in ‘Heeramandi 2,’ the ladies arrive in the film industry from Lahore. Following the split, the most of them go to the Mumbai or Kolkata film industries, leaving Lahore behind. Thus, the trip through the market doesn’t change. They must still sing and dance, but now it’s for the producers, not the nawabs. We are intending for it to be the second season; we’ll see where it goes,” Bhansali continued.
“Sanjay Leela Bhansali has intricately woven magic to bring ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’ to life,” stated Monika Shergill, VP, programming, Netflix India. It has been really inspiring to see viewers all around the world fall in love with this series and turn it into a cultural phenomenon. I’m excited to share this with you.
