The formation of the Loss and Damage Fund and other financial arrangements to address the problem of climate justice has been hailed by Pakistan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, as a significant victory for Pakistan and all of the developing nations of the globe.
In a series of tweets that the Foreign Minister sent out on Sunday, he said that the monumental achievement for climate justice and the G77 led by Pakistan was that the COP27 had successfully concluded with loss and damage as part of the agenda, including a fund and financial arrangements to address this issue. He said that this was a monumental achievement for climate justice and the G77 led by Pakistan.
The Foreign Minister brought up the fact that the Group of 77, which he presided over at the United Nations, unanimously approved Pakistan’s motion to include a demand that loss and damage be included on the agenda for COP27.
Bilawal Bhutto Zardari stated that the interactions he had with John Kerry, the United States Special Presidential Envoy for Climate Change, both in Egypt and over the phone led to a compromise. During these interactions, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari requested support for the G77 and demanded the inclusion of financial arrangements to tackle loss and damage.
He expressed his sincere appreciation to each and every member of the G-77 as well as China for their unwavering support and confidence in Pakistan’s government.
