GENEVA: The UN said on Wednesday that over the past three decades, temperatures in Europe have risen at a rate that is more than twice as fast as the world average, making it the continent with the fastest rise.
According to a report from the World Meteorological Organization of the UN and the Copernicus Climate Change Service of the European Union, temperatures in the European region have increased by an average of 0.5 degrees Celsius per decade since 1991.
Due to this, the Alpine glaciers’ ice thickness decreased by 30 metres (just under 100 feet) between 1997 and 2021, while the Greenland ice sheet is rapidly melting and driving sea level rise.
