Even if a mentioned contact is excluded from viewing other status updates due to privacy settings, they will still see the status update in which they are mentioned.

Additionally, mentioned contacts can reshare the status update with their audience through a new reshare button within the status screen. In this case, the identity of the original creator remains private, and viewers of the reshared status cannot directly contact the original creator.

The feature is available to some beta testers who install the latest updates of WhatsApp beta for Android from the Google Play Store and will be rolled out to more users over the coming weeks.

I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to the government of Pakistan for successfully hosting the 23rd Meeting of Ministers of Trade and Commerce of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states. Also my warmest appreciations for the hospitality presented to the delegations.

The SCO is the largest regional organization in terms of area and population, covering 80% of Eurasia land 40% of the world’s population. With 20% of the world’s oil reserves, 44% of its gas reserves, and a GDP of $24.2 trillion in 2023—about one fourth of the global GDP—it holds an important economic and commercial position globally.

This organization has 10 main members, two observer members, and 14 dialogue partners. With the capacities of the SCO members, it is expected that many more countries join this important pact in the near future.

Activating all the capacities of the member countries in this organization is important, and it must be done through cooperation and collective synergy. In this important meeting, I focus on one aspect of these capacities, namely, transportation infrastructure and trade corridors, which drive the development of cooperation among the members of this organization and, indeed, the world.

We all know that major powers are currently seeking to create corridors that maximize their interests. In this framework, it is essential that the SCO members, in the first phase, complete the existing corridors and, in next phases, work towards creating new ones. The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the North-South Corridor, and the East-West Corridor are significant routes that can enhance synergy between members and other parts of the world.

I am proud to say that the Islamic Republic of Iran, with its 5,800 kilometers of coastline—including 890 kilometers in the north and 4,900 kilometers in the south—has a strategic position in connecting the North-South and East-West corridors.

Important ports such as Chabahar, Bandar Abbas, Mahshahr, Amirabad, and others serve as essential transportation hubs and play a significant role in this organization. Moreover, if you look at the map of our country’s railway lines, it is clear that with minimal investment, the Iranian railway network can play a crucial role in connecting the North-South and East-West corridors and providing SCO members access to global markets.

Our country has made special provisions and incentives for investment in coastal and northern areas, aiming to connect the railway lines of the member countries. It is hoped that, with the cooperation of the members, these capacities will be realized and contribute to the goals of this organization.

We hope that by focusing on completing transit lines, creating trade facilities, and striving to establish financial, banking, and commercial institutions, the members of this organization will take significant steps toward economic growth and development.

KP’s Air Ambulance Project Faces Delay Amid Funding Shortages

Stolen Winston Churchill Photo Found in Italy

A brazen art heist that gripped Canadians has been solved: a famed portrait of a scowling Winston Churchill, stolen from an Ottawa hotel, has been found in Italy, and the thief has been apprehended, police said Wednesday, according to AFP.

The “Roaring Lion” portrait of the late British prime minister was gifted to the Fairmont Chateau Laurier hotel in Ottawa by the late Armenian-born Canadian photographer Yousuf Karsh. It was taken by Karsh after the wartime leader addressed the Canadian parliament in 1941, becoming a symbol of British defiance in World War II.

In August 2022, hotel staff noticed the photograph, hanging in a reading room next to the main lobby, had been replaced with a forgery. Two years on, Ottawa police say they have, with the help of public tips and forensic sleuthing, found the culprit—a 43-year-old man living 230 miles (370 kilometers) west of Ottawa—and the stolen portrait in Genoa, Italy.

“The portrait was sold through an auction house in London to a buyer in Italy, both of whom were unaware that the piece was stolen,” police said in a statement. The suspect was arrested in April and charged with theft, forgery, and trafficking in stolen goods.

“We are thrilled about the iconic Roaring Lion portrait returning to its rightful home at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier,” hotel general manager Genevieve Dumas told AFP. “This portrait… is not only an irreplaceable work of art but also a significant piece of our hotel’s history,” she said. The artwork is to be returned in the coming weeks to the hotel, which plans to once again put it on display for guests.

Karsh and his wife, after fleeing the Armenian genocide and settling in Canada, lived at the hotel for 18 years. He also had a studio there until 1992. His other portrait subjects included Martin Luther King Jr., Ernest Hemingway, and Queen Elizabeth II.

According to historical accounts, Karsh plucked a cigar from Churchill’s mouth just before taking his portrait, which made the British premier grimace. The image is arguably the most iconic of Churchill and widely circulated, even appearing on the British five-pound note.

Maintenance staff were the first to notice the portrait’s disappearance. As speculation swirled over the heist, former hotel guests shared their snaps of the portrait over the years, helping to narrow down the date when it likely went missing from December 25, 2021, to January 6, 2022. The hotel, which had hosted Karsh’s first exhibition in 1936, also confirmed with the photographer’s estate that a signature on the print was a fake.

Millions in Southeast Asia Battle Floods as Death Toll Exceeds 200

The typhoon made landfall in Vietnam over the weekend, unleashing torrential rain that has inundated northern Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar, leading to deadly landslides and extensive river flooding.

One Vietnamese farmer, who identified himself only as Tu, shared his plight with AFP. His 1,800 square meter peach blossom plantation was completely submerged, destroying all 400 of his trees. “It will be so hard for me to recover from this loss — I think I will lose up to $40,000 this season,” Tu lamented. “I really don’t know what to do now, I’m just waiting for the water to recede.”

The United Nations children’s agency (Unicef) reported that the typhoon damaged more than 140,000 homes across 26 provinces in Vietnam. Unicef has been providing water to homes, health centers, and schools in the most affected areas and plans to send medical and sanitation supplies to the Vietnamese government in the coming days.
