Usama Mir: The Sole Pakistani Pick in 2024-25 BBL Draft

In the recently concluded drafts for Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL) and Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), leg-spinner Usama Mir emerged as the only Pakistani player to be picked for the upcoming BBL season. Despite the availability of 69 male and 11 female Pakistani cricketers, Usama was selected by the Melbourne Stars in the third round of the draft. He had previously played for the same franchise in the 2023-24 edition of the league.

The BBL, which will run from December 15, 2024, to January 27, 2025, prioritized foreign players who are expected to be available for the entire season, without complications related to No Objection Certificates (NOCs). Pakistani players often face uncertainty in securing NOCs due to their national team commitments, which limits their participation in international leagues like the BBL.

The first-round picks of the draft featured notable international cricketers, including Ben Duckett (Melbourne Stars), James Vince (Sydney Sixers — retention), Laurie Evans (Melbourne Renegades), and Shai Hope (Hobart Hurricanes). The subsequent rounds saw more international talents being selected, with Usama Mir being picked in the third round by the Melbourne Stars, while several teams chose to pass on their picks in the later rounds.

This year’s draft reflected a strategic focus on securing players who can commit to the entire BBL season, which influenced the selection of many international players.

Women’s cardiovascular risk can be estimated for 30 years using blood tests: study

A recent study presented at the European Society of Cardiology annual meeting in London highlights a shift in how women’s cardiovascular risks should be evaluated and managed. The study suggests that blood tests conducted in a woman’s 30s can predict her cardiovascular risk over the next 30 years, challenging the current practice of initiating preventive measures in the 60s or 70s.

Dr. Paul Ridker from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, who led the study, emphasized that this new approach has significant implications for cardiovascular disease prevention and treatment. “The implications for therapy are broad,” Ridker noted, as this approach could influence the use of cholesterol-lowering drugs, anti-inflammatory medications, and emerging treatments for specific lipid abnormalities.

Current guidelines typically recommend that preventive therapies for cardiovascular disease, such as statins, be considered only when women reach their 60s or 70s. However, the new data suggest that evaluating cardiovascular risks earlier could lead to better long-term outcomes. Ridker argued that these findings necessitate a revision of existing guidelines to account for longer-term risk assessments rather than focusing on shorter time frames.

The study analyzed data from 27,939 participants in the Women’s Health Initiative, who underwent blood tests between 1992 and 1995. The tests measured levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C, or “bad cholesterol”), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), and lipoprotein(a). These markers are associated with cardiovascular risk and inflammation.

Key findings include:

  • Women with the highest levels of LDL-C had a 36% higher risk of major cardiovascular events over the next 30 years compared to those with the lowest levels.
  • Women with the highest levels of hsCRP had a 70% higher risk of such events.
  • Women with the highest levels of lipoprotein(a) had a 33% higher risk.

Those with elevated levels of all three markers were found to be 2.6 times more likely to experience a major cardiovascular event and 3.7 times more likely to suffer a stroke over the next three decades.

Dr. Ridker highlighted that these biomarkers provide independent and complementary information about different biological issues each woman faces. This allows for a more personalized approach to treatment, targeting specific issues identified by the biomarkers.

Current treatments available include statins for lowering LDL-C, and various medications for reducing hsCRP levels. However, therapies targeting lipoprotein(a) are still under development by companies such as Novartis, Amgen, Eli Lilly, and Silence Therapeutics.

Lifestyle changes, such as increased physical activity and smoking cessation, can also help manage these risks.

Although most participants in the study were white Americans, Dr. Ridker suggested that the findings could be particularly impactful for Black and Hispanic women, who may experience higher rates of undetected and untreated inflammation. He called for universal screening for hsCRP and lipoprotein(a), similar to the universal screening already in place for cholesterol, to address this global health issue effectively.

Overall, the study underscores the need for a proactive approach to cardiovascular risk assessment and prevention, potentially reshaping how and when preventive treatments are recommended for women.

Robots designed by rocket scientists will investigate the melting of Antarctic ice.

Engineers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) are developing a fleet of underwater robot probes to enhance understanding of climate change’s impact on Antarctica’s ice sheets and sea level rise. These probes, known as IceNodes, are designed to provide crucial data on how warming ocean waters are melting the continent’s coastal ice, which is vital for improving sea level rise predictions.

A prototype of these submersible robots was tested in March at a US Navy camp in the Arctic, beneath the Beaufort Sea north of Alaska. Paul Glick, a JPL Robotics engineer leading the IceNode project, emphasized that these robots can reach the most challenging locations on Earth, delivering valuable scientific instruments to areas previously inaccessible.

The IceNodes are designed to measure the melting rates of ice shelves from beneath, offering more precise data than traditional satellite measurements. These ice shelves, which extend from the land into the sea, play a crucial role in holding back glaciers that would otherwise contribute significantly to sea level rise. The melting of these shelves has accelerated, with NASA’s 2022 analysis revealing that Antarctica’s ice shelf mass has decreased by approximately 12 trillion tons since 1997, a rate double previous estimates. If Antarctica’s ice shelves were to melt entirely, global sea levels could rise by about 200 feet (60 meters).

The cylindrical IceNodes, each about 8 feet (2.4 meters) long and 10 inches (25 centimeters) in diameter, will be released either from ice boreholes or from vessels at sea. They are designed to drift with ocean currents and navigate to critical “grounding zones” where the ice shelf meets the ocean and land—areas that are challenging for satellite signals to penetrate.

Once at their target location, the probes will deploy three-pronged “landing gear” to attach themselves to the underside of the ice shelf. They will then record data on seasonal fluctuations and other variables for up to a year before drifting back to the open sea to transmit their findings via satellite.

Earlier tests included deployments in California’s Monterey Bay and beneath the winter surface of Lake Superior in Michigan. The goal is to eventually deploy up to 10 probes to comprehensively study a single ice shelf cavity, though further development and testing are required before full-scale deployment can be planned.

These innovative probes aim to provide a deeper understanding of the ice-ocean interaction and help refine predictions of future sea level changes, which is crucial for addressing climate change’s global impacts.

Mehidy grabs five wickets against Ban as Pakistan is bowled out for 274.

In the ongoing second Test between Pakistan and Bangladesh at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, Bangladesh’s spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz delivered a standout performance, taking five wickets to bowl out Pakistan for 274 on day two. After rain washed out the first day’s play, Bangladesh capitalized on the conditions, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz (5-61) and pacer Taskin Ahmed (3-57) leading the charge against the Pakistani batting lineup.

Taskin Ahmed made an immediate impact by dismissing Abdullah Shafique with a swinging delivery in the very first over, after Pakistan had opted to bat first. Despite the early loss, Pakistan recovered to reach 99-1 by lunch, thanks to a solid 107-run partnership between Shan Masood and Saim Ayub. Masood, who scored his 10th Test half-century, was the backbone of Pakistan’s innings before being trapped lbw by Miraz for 57 soon after the break.

Saim Ayub, who scored 58, was stumped after missing the line of a flighted delivery from Miraz, and Saud Shakeel was bowled by Taskin after being dropped at slip earlier in his innings. Pakistan’s middle order struggled against the persistent Bangladesh attack, with key players like Babar Azam (31) and Mohammad Rizwan (29) failing to make substantial contributions.

Salman Ali Agha provided some resistance with a half-century but fell for 54, leaving Pakistan in trouble at 211-6. The tail was quickly wrapped up by the Bangladeshi bowlers, with Miraz stumping Abrar Ahmed to complete his five-wicket haul, ending Pakistan’s innings at 274.

In response, Bangladesh openers Shadman Islam and Zakir Hasan safely negotiated the few overs before stumps, reaching 10-0. Bangladesh will be looking to build on their strong start and aim for a series sweep, having won the first Test by 10 wickets at the same venue.

The match saw some significant changes in the Pakistan squad, with Shaheen Shah Afridi being released from the squad and Naseem Shah also missing out, replaced by Abrar Ahmed and Mir Hamza. As the game progresses, Bangladesh will look to capitalize on their early momentum, while Pakistan will need to fight back strongly to avoid a series defeat.

Cristiano Ronaldo will play in the UEFA Nations League with the Portugal team.

Cristiano Ronaldo, the iconic Portuguese footballer, is set to rejoin his national team for the upcoming UEFA Nations League matches against Croatia and Scotland. Despite a lackluster performance in Euro 2024, where Portugal was eliminated by France in the quarter-finals, Ronaldo has managed to retain his place in the squad. The 39-year-old forward, who currently plays for Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, is preparing to earn his 213th cap for Portugal, where he has already netted 130 goals.

Ronaldo’s inclusion in the squad reflects his enduring status as Portugal’s captain and one of the most celebrated footballers in the world. Even though he didn’t score in Euro 2024, his remarkable career achievements, including five Ballon d’Or awards, continue to solidify his position in the team. Reports suggest that Ronaldo is determined to participate in the 2026 World Cup, which would explain his continued involvement with the national team.

As the UEFA Nations League campaign kicks off, Portugal’s head coach Roberto Martinez has a wealth of attacking options at his disposal, including Joao Felix, Pedro Neto, Diogo Jota, Rafael Leao, and Pedro Goncalves. While it remains uncertain who will be selected for the starting lineup, Ronaldo’s experience and leadership will likely play a crucial role in guiding the team.

“Disappearing” victims surface in Bangladesh and, in spite of obstacles, seek justice

Michael Chakma, a prominent indigenous rights activist from Bangladesh, recently recounted his harrowing five-year ordeal after being abducted by armed men near Dhaka. Chakma, who was released earlier this month, described how he was held in a dark, tiny cell, blindfolded, and handcuffed, before being abruptly freed. He initially feared for his life, believing his captors would kill him, but instead, he was unexpectedly released.

Chakma’s abduction in 2018 was part of a larger pattern of enforced disappearances during the 15-year rule of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Chakma revealed that he was interrogated about his opposition to Hasina, beaten for weeks, and then left in isolation in what he described as one of “hundreds” of similar cells in an unknown detention facility.

Sheikh Hasina’s government has been accused of widespread human rights violations, including the suppression of dissent, the arrest of opposition leaders, and crackdowns on free speech. These actions culminated in her resignation this month following deadly student-led protests that left hundreds dead. The interim government, now led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, has made it a priority to investigate the disappearances and extrajudicial killings that occurred during Hasina’s tenure.

Human Rights Watch reported in 2021 that nearly 600 people have been forcibly disappeared in Bangladesh since 2009, with the fate of many remaining unknown. The rights group has verified 86 cases of enforced disappearances where the victims’ fates are still unclear, while others were either released, shown as arrested, or found dead. Activists and rights organizations believe that victims were held in various secret detention centers across the country, and any involvement of the military, paramilitary, or police could complicate the ongoing investigations.

The newly formed interim government has established a five-member commission, led by a former high court judge, to investigate these disappearances. However, there are concerns about potential cover-ups by the perpetrators. Meenakshi Ganguly, Asia Deputy Director for Human Rights Watch, emphasized the need for transparency, urging security forces to release those who are still missing or, if they were killed in custody, to provide answers to their families.

Despite multiple attempts, neither Hasina, who is currently residing in an undisclosed location near New Delhi, nor her son Sajeeb Wazed, who has been speaking on her behalf from the U.S., responded to requests for comments on these allegations. Bangladesh’s military and police also did not provide any statements regarding their potential involvement in the disappearances. The investigations are seen as a crucial step in addressing the human rights abuses that have plagued Bangladesh in recent years.

Harris calls on Trump to use microphones during the entire debate.

Vice President Kamala Harris has challenged former President Donald Trump to a debate with their microphones left on throughout the entire event. Both Harris and Trump have agreed to participate in the debate, which will be hosted by ABC News on September 10.

Harris’s call for an open debate comes after Trump expressed a preference for keeping his microphone on, following his frustration with muted mics during a previous debate against Joe Biden. Harris criticized Trump, suggesting that his advisors’ reluctance to let him debate with a live microphone reflects a lack of confidence in him.

The upcoming debate will be the first face-off between Harris and Trump since Biden exited the presidential race after a disappointing CNN debate in June, which raised concerns about his mental fitness. The debate format, especially regarding microphone use, could play a significant role, as “hot mics” can capture unintended remarks, while muted microphones can prevent interruptions.

In addition to this debate, a vice-presidential debate between Democratic candidate Tim Walz and Republican candidate JD Vance is scheduled for October 1 on CBS News.

India is prepared for more rains in September than usual.

India is expected to experience above-average rainfall in September, following a surplus of rain in August, according to Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, the director-general of the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The rainfall in September is predicted to exceed 109% of the 50-year average, potentially impacting summer-sown crops like rice, cotton, soybeans, corn, and pulses, which are typically harvested from mid-September.

While this excessive rainfall could lead to crop damage and contribute to food inflation, it may also enhance soil moisture levels, benefiting the planting of winter-sown crops such as wheat, rapeseed, and chickpea. India, as the world’s second-largest producer of wheat, sugar, and rice, has already imposed various export restrictions on these commodities, and any crop losses due to heavy rainfall could prompt the government to extend these curbs.

The monsoon season, vital to India’s nearly $3.5 trillion economy, delivers about 70% of the annual rainfall needed to irrigate farms and replenish water reserves. This year’s monsoon has already brought 6.9% more rainfall than average since its onset on June 1, with July seeing 9% more rain and August experiencing 15.3% above-average rainfall, particularly in the northwestern and central regions, leading to flooding in some areas.

Typically, the monsoon begins its retreat by mid-September from the northwestern state of Rajasthan, concluding across the country by mid-October. However, this year’s forecast suggests a delayed withdrawal, with continued heavy rainfall expected over Rajasthan and Gujarat starting around September 15. This delay could pose a risk to summer-sown crops that are ready for harvest, as noted by a Mumbai-based dealer with a global trade house.

Zuckerberg faces “life in jail” according to Trump after he allegedly tried to rig the US elections

Donald Trump has made headlines by threatening Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg with “life in prison” if he engages in any illegal activity related to the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election. This threat is part of Trump’s upcoming book, “Save America,” which is scheduled for release on September 3. The book, a collection of pictures, anecdotes, and events from his time in office and presidential campaigns, also criticizes Zuckerberg for allegedly conspiring against him during the 2020 election.

Trump’s warning to Zuckerberg includes a reference to the Meta CEO’s $400 million donation to election offices, which Trump implies was an attempt to influence the outcome. He also mentioned his controversial 2018 meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and included photos with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and former German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Trump’s comments are part of his broader caution against election tampering in the upcoming 2024 race.

Nations that forbid access to Elon Musk’s X social network

Elon Musk’s social network X, formerly known as Twitter, has faced bans and restrictions in various countries due to different political, social, and legal issues. Here are some of the key countries where X has been banned:

  1. Brazil: Recently, Brazil implemented a ban on X following a judicial order by Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes. The ban was imposed after X failed to comply with court orders to suspend certain accounts. The Brazilian judiciary cited concerns over the platform’s role in spreading disinformation and undermining judicial decisions. Users attempting to access X via VPNs face significant fines.
  2. China: Twitter, now X, has been banned in China since June 2009. The ban was part of a broader crackdown on Western social media platforms and coincided with the 20th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square protests. Chinese users have since turned to local alternatives like Weibo and WeChat.
  3. Iran: Iran blocked Twitter in 2009 following contested presidential elections and widespread protests. Despite the ban, Twitter has been used covertly to share information about dissident movements and recent demonstrations, particularly those related to women’s rights.
  4. Turkmenistan: This Central Asian country has a long-standing ban on Twitter along with many other foreign websites. The government maintains tight control over internet access and surveillance.
  5. North Korea: North Korea banned Twitter in 2016 along with other major social media platforms. Internet access in the country is heavily restricted and monitored, with only a select few having access to the global internet.
  6. Myanmar: Following the military coup in February 2021, Myanmar’s junta banned X as part of its efforts to curb opposition and control information flow. The ban remains in effect as the military maintains strict internet regulation.
  7. Russia: Russia began throttling Twitter in 2021 and implemented a full ban in March 2022 after its invasion of Ukraine. The Russian government cited the platform’s role in spreading “illegal content” as the reason for the ban. Despite this, many users access X via VPNs.
  8. Pakistan: Pakistan banned X during the parliamentary elections in February 2024, citing security concerns. The ban is part of broader efforts to control information and curb dissent during politically sensitive periods.
  9. Venezuela: The Venezuelan government suspended access to X for ten days in August 2024 amid nationwide protests following disputed presidential elections. The suspension has remained in place beyond the initial period.

These bans are often part of broader efforts by governments, particularly those with authoritarian tendencies, to control information and suppress dissent. The specific reasons for each ban vary but generally relate to concerns over national security, public order, and the spread of disinformation.

Strengthening Pakistan’s Fintech Ecosystem

Author: Iqra Bano Sohail

In Pakistan, fintech or financial technology is reshaping financial services through technology, addressing traditional banking limitations and enhancing accessibility. Yet, significant challenges remain, notably the lack of robust data privacy regulations, which poses risks to consumer trust and cybersecurity in digital financial services while impacting innovation and investment in the fintech ecosystem. While regulatory bodies like the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) have frameworks in place, improvements are necessary.

Fintech represents a pivotal transformation in how financial services are delivered and accessed globally as it involves the use of technology to improve and automate the delivery of such services  According to reports by SBP, fintech adoption is steadily increasing, particularly in mobile banking and digital payments, which have the potential to significantly enhance financial inclusion. According to the World Bank, as of 2021, approximately 87% of Pakistan’s population had access to mobile phones, providing a strong foundation for mobile banking and digital payments to thrive.

However, there are certain factors hindering the full potential of fintech in Pakistan such as the absence of clear regulations around data privacy and security as evidenced by the delay in formalizing the Personal Data Protection Bill (PDPB) 2023. This delay raises significant concerns regarding the safety and security of personal and financial information in the digital age, posing a substantial barrier to cultivating trust in digital financial services.

Pakistan should prioritise the enactment of this bill and its consent requirements (Article 13) should be refined to ensure individuals freely give consent, mirroring the stricter standards outlined in the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) Article 7 and it should clarify data protection restrictions as specified under GDPR Chapter V.

The State’s financial sector is embracing innovation through a combination of regulations and experimentation. SBP’s Electronic Money Institution (EMI) Regulations create a secure environment for digital financial services by setting licensing requirements and consumer protection standards. This is exemplified by NADRA e-Sahulat, an e-commerce platform that expands financial service access. Furthering this innovation, SECP’s Regulatory Sandbox allows controlled testing of new financial ideas by fintech companies and established institutions. . Notably, the first cohort of participants showcased notable success. Specifically, FINJA Lending Services Limited, with its peer-to-peer lending platform, and First Digital General Takaful, a dedicated digital takaful operator, achieved significant milestones.

SECP’s framework for fintech holds promise, but improvements can unlock its full potential. Limited scope in the regulatory sandbox can stifle innovation in areas with high growth potential. Singapore’s Monetary Authority (MAS) addresses this challenge with a tiered sandbox framework. This framework offers various levels tailored to different risk profiles and innovation types. Their FinTech Regulatory Sandbox 2.0 specifically allows experimentation in areas like digital identity, blockchain trade finance etc. This tiered structure provides a valuable blueprint for SECP.

Implementing a transparent exit strategy is also imperative. It is essential to establish a clear and transparent process for exiting the sandbox and transitioning to full regulatory compliance. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) offers a well-defined exit strategy for its Fintech Regulatory Sandbox. This notice outlines the specific regulatory requirements and licensing procedures they need to follow for full market launch. By adopting a Hong Kong-style exit strategy, Pakistan’s SECP can provide a clear “Graduation Notice” outlining the licensing procedures and regulatory requirements for graduating companies for an easier transition.

In the context of SBP’s EMI regulations, a tiered regulatory approach based on the size, complexity, and risk profile of the EMI could be beneficial. One-size-fits-all regulations for EMIs can stifle the growth of smaller FinTech companies in Pakistan.  Malaysia’s Securities Commission (SC) offers a potential solution with their tiered EMI regulatory framework. This system categorizes EMIs based on size and transaction volume, allowing for a risk-based approach. Smaller EMIs benefit from simpler regulations, while larger or more complex institutions face stricter oversight.

Additionally, SECP and SBP can collaborate with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT) to develop a multi-channel campaign to educate citizens about fintech benefits and responsible use.

Germany Deports First Afghan Nationals Since Taliban Takeover

Germany executed its first deportation of Afghan nationals to their home country since the Taliban assumed control in August 2021. This move marks a significant shift in Germany’s immigration policy, which had been on hold since the Taliban’s takeover.

The deportation was carried out on Friday, with a chartered Qatar Airways flight departing from Leipzig airport bound for Kabul. According to Der Spiegel, the flight carried 28 Afghan nationals who were all convicted offenders. German government spokesperson Steffen Hebestreit confirmed that these individuals had no legal right to remain in Germany and had outstanding deportation orders against them.

The operation followed two months of “secret negotiations” facilitated by Qatar, which acted as an intermediary between Berlin and the Taliban authorities. Hebestreit noted that Germany had sought assistance from key regional partners to enable the deportations, though specific details were not disclosed.

Germany had previously halted all deportations to Afghanistan and closed its embassy in Kabul following the Taliban’s rise to power. This policy shift was driven by the challenging and precarious situation in Afghanistan under the Taliban regime, which had raised concerns about the safety and human rights of those being deported.

The resumption of deportations comes as Germany faces mounting pressure to address illegal migration and take a tougher stance on dangerous and convicted asylum seekers. Recent high-profile crimes committed by migrants have intensified the debate on this issue.

One such incident was last week’s knife attack at a street festival in Solingen, western Germany, where a 26-year-old Syrian man allegedly killed three people. This suspect had been scheduled for deportation to Bulgaria weeks earlier, but authorities were unable to locate him, leading to heightened scrutiny of Germany’s immigration enforcement.

In another case, a 25-year-old Afghan was accused of murdering a police officer in Mannheim in May, a brutal act that further fueled the debate over deportations. The attack underscored the challenges Germany faces in managing asylum policies and the balance between security and humanitarian concerns.

Interior Minister Nancy Faeser announced on Thursday that Germany would soon resume expulsions to Syria and Afghanistan as part of a broader package to tighten security and reform asylum policies. This move reflects the government’s response to growing public discontent and political pressure regarding immigration issues.

The topic of immigration and deportations is anticipated to play a significant role in two regional elections in eastern Germany scheduled for this Sunday. The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, known for its strong anti-immigration stance, is expected to make substantial gains in these elections. The outcomes could influence national policy and shape the political landscape in the coming months.

Germany’s decision to resume deportations to Afghanistan reflects a complex and evolving approach to immigration and security. It highlights the ongoing challenges faced by European countries in managing asylum seekers and addressing public concerns over safety and integration. As Germany continues to grapple with these issues, the impact of recent policy changes and upcoming elections will be closely watched both domestically and internationally.

Kamala Harris Defends Immigration Shift and Considers Republican Cabinet Member

In her first major interview since being nominated for president by the Democrats, Kamala Harris defended recent shifts in her policy positions and hinted at a potential bipartisan approach for her administration. The interview, conducted by CNN anchor Dana Bash and set to air at 9 p.m. ET (01:00 GMT on Friday), comes as Harris and her vice presidential running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, continue their campaign efforts.

Harris, who has moderated some of her stances since her 2020 presidential campaign, addressed criticisms regarding her recent moves towards more centrist positions. Notably, she has adopted a tougher stance on immigration and shifted her view on fracking, an issue crucial in swing states like Pennsylvania. Despite these changes, Harris emphasized that her core values remain consistent.

“My value around what we need to do to secure our border – that value has not changed,” Harris asserted. She drew on her extensive experience as California’s Attorney General, where she prosecuted criminal organizations involved in illegal border activities. Harris highlighted that her commitment to addressing transnational crime and ensuring border security remains steadfast.

The vice presidential candidate also discussed her openness to including a Republican in her potential cabinet. This move, she believes, would bring diverse perspectives to crucial decision-making processes. “I think it’s important to have people at the table when some of the most important decisions are being made that have different views, different experiences. And I think it would be to the benefit of the American public to have a member of my cabinet who was a Republican,” Harris said.

This interview marks Harris’ first one-on-one with a major news organization since President Joe Biden’s endorsement of her candidacy on July 21. While she has participated in interviews and fielded questions on the campaign trail, her solo interview with CNN is expected to address lingering concerns about her readiness and policy positions.

Harris’ relative absence from formal interviews and press conferences has drawn criticism from opponents and raised concerns among supporters about her performance in unscripted settings. Critics argue that her ability to handle spontaneous questioning may not match her effectiveness in prepared speeches and rally settings.

In contrast, Donald Trump frequently engages with the media through press conferences and interviews, using these opportunities to criticize his opponents, including Harris and Biden. During her visit to Savannah, Georgia, where the interview was conducted, Harris encountered a small group of Trump supporters braving the rain to demonstrate against her.

The interview was taped at Kim’s Cafe, a Black-owned restaurant in Savannah, as part of Harris and Walz’s ongoing bus tour through Georgia. The state, which played a pivotal role in Biden’s narrow 2020 victory, remains a crucial battleground in this year’s election. Harris and Walz are working to appeal to voters in a state that could significantly influence the outcome of the upcoming presidential race.

As the election campaign intensifies, Harris’ interview serves as an effort to present her in command of key issues while addressing concerns about her policy evolution and media engagement. The discussion on including a Republican in her cabinet reflects her commitment to a bipartisan approach and could resonate with voters seeking unity and cross-party collaboration.

Pakistan vs Bangladesh: First Day of Second Test Called Off Due to Rain

The opening day of the second Test match between Pakistan and Bangladesh at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium was called off due to persistent rain and a wet outfield. The adverse weather conditions, which have included intermittent monsoon showers, have disrupted what was expected to be a crucial match for both teams.

Heavy rains in the morning led to a delay in the scheduled toss, and despite a brief cessation of rain, the conditions did not improve enough to allow play to commence. The Met Office has forecasted intermittent monsoon rain, which continues to affect the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad. The rain has left much of the stadium marshy, further complicating the possibility of play on the first day. With the pitch covered, the major concern remains the condition of the outfield, which needs to dry out before any cricketing activities can resume.

This delay is a troubling sign for the Pakistan team, who are eager to level the two-match series after Bangladesh’s dominant performance in the first Test. The first Test, also held in Rawalpindi, saw Bangladesh secure a historic 10-wicket victory, marking their first-ever win over Pakistan in 14 Tests. The win has given Bangladesh a significant boost as they seek their first Test-series victory over Pakistan.

Pakistan’s preparations for this crucial game have been affected by team changes and injuries. Notably, pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi has been left out of the squad for this Test. Afridi, who has been struggling with his rhythm, is taking time off to be with his newly born son. Pakistan’s head coach, Jason Gillespie, stated that Afridi’s absence is part of a strategic decision to allow him to spend time with his family and to better plan the team’s combination for the game. “Obviously Shaheen will miss out on this game. We had a good conversation with him and he fully understands and appreciates the thinking behind it. We are just looking at what our best combination is for this game,” Gillespie said.

Pakistan’s recent performances have been under scrutiny. They were knocked out early in the T20 World Cup earlier this year and suffered a whitewash in their last Test series in Australia. These struggles have put additional pressure on the team to deliver strong performances in this series.

The Pakistan squad for the second Test includes Shan Masood as captain, with Saud Shakeel as vice-captain, and Mohammad Rizwan as wicketkeeper. The squad also features Abrar Ahmed, Mohammad Ali, Salman Ali Agha, Saim Ayub, Babar Azam, Mir Hamza, Abdullah Shafique, Naseem Shah, and Khurram Shehzad. In the series opener, Pakistan utilized a pace-heavy attack, including Shaheen, Khurram Shahzad, Mohammad Ali, and Naseem Shah. However, their strategy did not yield the desired results, and they will need to reassess their approach given the current circumstances.

The weather has added an extra layer of uncertainty to the match, as both teams will now have to wait for the conditions to improve. The hope is that play can resume on the second day, with the pitch and outfield conditions allowing for a fair contest. As the weather continues to play a pivotal role, the delay serves as a reminder of how external factors can impact the outcomes and dynamics of international cricket matches.

Swiatek Calls for Enhanced Tools to Combat Online Abuse in Tennis

Iga Swiatek, the five-time Grand Slam champion, has called on tennis’s governing bodies to provide more comprehensive tools to help players combat online abuse. Swiatek’s comments follow recent statements from French player Caroline Garcia, who revealed she was targeted with online harassment after her first-round loss at the US Open. Garcia attributed the abuse partially to “unhealthy betting” practices, highlighting a growing concern among players about the impact of online negativity.

In response to these issues, the International Tennis Federation (ITF), the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC), and the United States Tennis Association (USTA) launched the Threat Matrix in December. This service employs artificial intelligence and open-source data to monitor and protect players from online threats. The French Open has also introduced AI-powered software to block online harassment and hate speech, offering a promising solution for players facing digital abuse.

Swiatek, speaking after her victory over Ena Shibahara, emphasized the need for further measures to safeguard players in the online realm. She remarked, “It would be nice if we can do more as Garcia did and try to educate people. Also maybe in the future, have some solutions such as using AI to make it safer for us.” Swiatek highlighted the challenge of navigating the internet safely, noting that players must be cautious about what they read and who they follow. She acknowledged the usefulness of tools provided by the French Open, such as apps designed to block hateful messages, and expressed hope for the development of additional resources.

World number six Jessica Pegula shared her experience with online abuse, noting that despite her efforts to avoid negative comments, she still encountered harassment through her skincare brand’s social media account. Pegula described how her social media manager was alarmed by the severity of the abuse, including death threats, which she had become somewhat desensitized to. “There was this girl that does my social media for my company Ready 24, and she said ‘you know, you’re getting a lot of really bad messages’,” Pegula explained. “I laughed because it’s so normal for me. I’m like, ‘Oh, no, don’t worry, it’s nothing.’ She was gravely concerned that I was getting death threats… It’s not normal, but it’s totally normal for us.”

Men’s world number one Jannik Sinner, who has faced intense scrutiny related to a doping case from which he was ultimately cleared, also addressed the issue of online abuse. Sinner admitted that while he tries to avoid social media, he is aware of the negative messages directed at him. “I’m not so much on socials, especially in the last period. I try to not look. I know that there are some negative messages, but it’s something you have to be careful about,” Sinner said. He advised younger players to rely on their close friends and family for support, emphasizing the importance of having a solid support network.

Russian player Karen Khachanov, who was defeated by Britain’s Dan Evans earlier this week, echoed the call for respect and kindness in the online space. In a post on Instagram, Khachanov urged fans to avoid kicking someone when they are down and to foster a more supportive environment. “I will be grateful for all the support that I get,” he wrote. “Let’s be kind to one another. Less hate and more love and the world will become a better place.”

The tennis community’s call for more effective measures against online abuse underscores the need for continued efforts to protect athletes from digital harassment. As online platforms and social media become increasingly integral to public life, ensuring a safe and respectful environment for players remains a crucial priority.

Cristiano Ronaldo ‘Honoured’ to Receive Major UEFA Champions League Award

Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portuguese football legend and Al Nassr star, was recently honored with the prestigious title of “all-time leading goalscorer” in the UEFA Champions League. The accolade was presented to him during the inaugural 2024/25 UEFA Champions League event held at Monaco’s Grimaldi Forum.

At 39 years old, Ronaldo’s achievement underscores a career that has been marked by extraordinary milestones and an unparalleled consistency in Europe’s elite club competition. After receiving the award, Ronaldo reflected on his illustrious career, stating, “The first win with Manchester United was very special. Winning four times with Real Madrid was also incredible.”

Ronaldo’s journey through the Champions League has spanned over 18 years, beginning with his debut for Manchester United in 2003. His ability to consistently deliver in crucial moments has earned him a place in football history. Ronaldo humorously compared his achievements to a well-known condiment, saying, “In 2018, in Lisbon, I felt the pressure of being the most expensive player in the world and needing to win the Champions League. But I think goals and trophies are like ketchup; once they start coming, they keep coming.”

Ronaldo’s record in the Champions League is a testament to his skill and longevity. Over the course of 183 matches, he has scored 140 goals, making him the competition’s all-time top scorer. His impact extends beyond mere statistics; he has lifted the Champions League trophy five times, the second most by any player. His victories include four titles with Real Madrid (2014, 2016, 2017, and 2018) and one with Manchester United (2008).

Remarkably, Ronaldo is the only player to have scored in three different Champions League finals—against Chelsea in 2008, Atletico Madrid in 2014, and Juventus in 2017. His scoring prowess is further highlighted by his record as the Champions League top-scorer in seven different seasons. Notably, Ronaldo also holds the record for the most goals in a single season, having netted 17 goals during Real Madrid’s historic 2013/14 campaign.

In addition to these records, Ronaldo achieved a remarkable feat with his longest Champions League scoring streak, finding the net in 11 successive matches from June 2017 to April 2018. His ability to deliver hat-tricks in the competition is equally impressive, with eight to his name.

The accolade from UEFA is just one of many honors Ronaldo has received throughout his career. He has been awarded the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year multiple times and remains the all-time leading scorer in all UEFA club competitions with 145 goals in 197 appearances. Furthermore, Ronaldo holds the record as the most prolific player in men’s international football, with 130 goals in 212 appearances.

Following the event, Ronaldo shared his gratitude with his fans on Instagram. He posted a snapshot from the award ceremony and wrote in the caption: “Honored to receive this award from @championsleague for being the all-time top scorer of the competition. Grateful for all the support along the way! Thank you!”

Ronaldo’s career is a testament to his extraordinary talent and dedication. His achievements in the Champions League, coupled with his records in international football and UEFA club competitions, solidify his status as one of the greatest footballers of all time. As he continues to play at the highest level, Ronaldo’s legacy in the sport is firmly established, and his recent award further cements his place in football history.

The Urgent Need for a New Approach in Balochistan: Reflections on Recent Tragedies

The recent “bloodbath” in Balochistan on August 26 should serve as a wake-up call for everyone. Just two months ago, I was in Quetta, experiencing the vibrant cultural and intellectual life of the city. The students I met were politically aware and hopeful for a more peaceful future, yet they were also deeply concerned about the current state of affairs. Their frustrations reflect a larger, more troubling reality in the province.

Despite the energetic and optimistic engagement of Baloch and Pashtun youth during cultural festivals and discussions, there is a dark undercurrent of disillusionment. Many educated young Baloch are turning to militant groups, including young women, some of whom have carried out suicide attacks. This mirrors the situation in Sri Lanka during the Tamil insurgency, where young women became radicalized.

The Baloch insurgency has deep historical roots, exacerbated by post-9/11 extremism, sectarianism, and nationalism. I recall covering Aimal Kansi’s funeral in 2002, where the youth’s changing political attitudes were evident. The rise of religious extremism and the involvement in the Afghan Jihad under General Zia-ul-Haq shifted the political landscape, fostering an environment ripe for radicalization.

The decline of political engagement in Balochistan started with the banning of the National Awami Party (NAP) in 1973, leading to the first major insurgency. The subsequent involvement in Afghanistan’s conflict further destabilized the region, creating fertile ground for extremist groups. Despite warnings from politicians like Ghous Bux Bizenjo, the state’s neglect and mishandling of Balochistan’s issues only intensified the conflict.

Efforts to resolve the conflict, such as Nawaz Sharif’s initiative in 2013, showed promise but were undermined by political manipulations. The creation of new political parties and the defeat of key leaders like Hasil Bizenjo further eroded trust and hope for a peaceful resolution.

Today’s Balochistan is marked by a lack of effective leadership and a political vacuum that cannot be filled by so-called representatives chosen by the state. Engaging with genuine leaders like Dr. Abdul Malik and Sardar Akhtar Mengal, and listening to Baloch nationalist thinkers, is crucial for any meaningful progress.

The recent crackdown on media freedom, including the takeover of the Quetta Press Club and the harassment of journalists, only exacerbates the situation. Suppressing dissent and controlling the narrative will not solve the crisis.

The tragedy of August 26, coinciding with the anniversary of Nawab Akbar Bugti’s assassination, underscores the need for a new approach. The solution lies within Balochistan itself, not through manipulated mandates or external interventions. With a significant portion of the population being youth, there is potential for positive change. Engaging with young people, addressing their concerns, and ensuring their rights to resources and opportunities is essential for peace and development. Time is running out for mere promises; decisive action is needed now.

Pakistan Approves Talks with China on Key ML-1 Railway Project under CPEC

The federal cabinet of Pakistan has approved initiating negotiations with China on the Financial Commitment Agreement to upgrade the Mainline-1 (ML-1) railway project, a key component of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who chaired the cabinet meeting in Islamabad, emphasized that the final agreement on this state-of-the-art project should be brought back to the cabinet for approval.

The ML-1 project, which spans 1,726 kilometers, is expected to significantly enhance Pakistan’s logistics capabilities. Once completed, the upgraded railway line will allow trains to operate at speeds of up to 120 km/h, with the capacity to handle up to 120 trains per day. This will substantially increase both passenger and freight capacities, meeting the country’s transportation needs for the next 25 to 30 years.

The Chinese government has shown a commitment to providing financing support for the project, including loans on favorable terms. However, the project’s current planning does not include the cost of rolling stock and security infrastructure, which is being addressed separately with an additional budget of around Rs36 billion.

In addition to the ML-1 project, the cabinet discussed ongoing efforts to strengthen law enforcement in Balochistan, following Prime Minister Shehbaz’s recent visit to Quetta. The prime minister highlighted the importance of eliminating terrorism to ensure the country’s progress and prosperity. He reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting law enforcement agencies and implementing development initiatives in the region.

The federal government is also focusing on youth development in Balochistan, with initiatives like increased quotas in educational programs and significant investments in solarizing agricultural tube wells. The prime minister praised the provincial government for its efforts to integrate Baloch youth into the national mainstream and assured continued federal support for these initiatives.

Prime Minister Shehbaz also noted that Moody’s had recently upgraded Pakistan’s economic rating, reflecting the country’s improving economic situation. He emphasized the need for continued efforts to further strengthen the economy, announcing that the federal government would soon introduce a five-year Home Grown Economic Revival Plan aimed at boosting various sectors, including exports, agriculture, and youth development.

The cabinet concluded by approving decisions made by the Economic Coordination Committee on August 29, 2024.

Pakistan and Bangladesh Pledge Closer Cooperation for South Asia’s Progress

In a recent telephonic conversation, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus pledged to strengthen ties between their nations and work closely for the progress and prosperity of South Asia. The conversation emphasized the need for enhanced regional cooperation to uplift the lives of people in both countries and across the region.

Prime Minister Shehbaz congratulated Yunus on his new role as Chief Adviser and praised his contributions to Bangladesh’s socio-economic development. He also expressed sympathy for the devastation caused by recent floods in Bangladesh, offering Pakistan’s support in relief efforts. The floods, resulting from relentless monsoon rains, have affected millions and caused significant loss of life and property in Bangladesh.

During the conversation, Prime Minister Shehbaz underscored the importance of revitalizing bilateral relations through increased cooperation in various fields. He highlighted the historical, religious, and cultural ties between Pakistan and Bangladesh and expressed a strong desire to boost commercial relations, cultural exchanges, and people-to-people contacts between the two nations.

This rare high-level contact comes shortly after Prime Minister Shehbaz extended Pakistan’s support to Bangladesh in a letter to Yunus, following the severe flooding. The prime minister’s gesture of solidarity reflects a broader commitment to improving ties between the two countries, which have often been strained due to historical and political differences.

The recent change in Bangladesh’s political landscape has also created new opportunities for strengthening relations. The ouster of Sheikh Hasina, following mass protests that began over job quotas and escalated into a broader movement, has opened the door for a potential reset in Pakistan-Bangladesh relations. Hasina’s resignation and subsequent flight into exile marked the end of her long tenure in power, which spanned 20 of the last 30 years.

The mass protests, which led to over 1,000 deaths, culminated in jubilant crowds taking over the presidential residence, signaling a significant shift in Bangladesh’s political dynamics. With Yunus now at the helm, both Pakistan and Bangladesh seem poised to explore new avenues for cooperation and mutual growth, aiming to foster stability and prosperity in South Asia.

Twelve more terrorists slain in the IBOs of Tirah Valley: ISPR

In a series of ongoing intelligence-based operations (IBOs) in Pakistan, security forces have neutralized 12 terrorists in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Tirah Valley, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). These operations, initiated on August 20, 2024, are targeting militants from the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and its affiliates, referred to as “Fitna-Al-Khwarij” by the military. As of now, a total of 37 terrorists have been killed and 14 others injured in these operations, delivering a significant blow to the militant group.

The ISPR emphasized the military’s commitment to restoring peace in the region, stating that the operations will continue until the area is fully secured and terrorism is eradicated. These efforts are part of a broader campaign to eliminate the threat of terrorism across the country, especially in areas that have been destabilized by militant activities.

In a parallel development, security forces also conducted IBOs in Balochistan’s Kech, Panjgur, and Zhob districts, resulting in the deaths of five terrorists and the injury of three others. These operations were launched in response to a series of terrorist attacks that targeted civilians in Balochistan on August 26. The military’s media wing reported that these operations are part of an extensive effort to track down the perpetrators of these attacks and bring them to justice.

The violence in Balochistan has escalated in recent weeks, with a particularly brutal incident on August 26 where 23 passengers were killed after being forcibly removed from buses and trucks in the Rarasham area of Musakhel. Additionally, 10 security personnel, including members of the police and Balochistan Levies, were martyred in a gun attack in Kalat.

Pakistan has seen a resurgence in militant attacks since the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan in 2021. The northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and southwestern Balochistan, which border Afghanistan and Iran, have been particularly affected. Last year, Balochistan experienced 170 militant attacks, resulting in the deaths of 151 civilians and 114 security personnel, according to the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies.

The Pakistani government has accused Afghanistan’s new rulers of failing to eliminate militants who use Afghan territory as a base for attacks on Pakistan. In response to the growing threat, Pakistan’s federal cabinet approved Operation Azm-e-Istehkam in June 2024, a renewed national counter-terrorism campaign aimed at implementing the Central Apex Committee’s recommendations under the National Action Plan. This operation is part of Pakistan’s broader strategy to root out terrorism and stabilize the region.

To guarantee “uninterrupted operations,” VPNs are being registered: PTA

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has launched a “one window” operation to streamline the registration of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), aiming to support the legitimate, secure, and uninterrupted operations of businesses like software houses, call centers, freelancers, and foreign missions in Pakistan. This initiative is part of an ongoing effort involving the PTA, the Ministry of Information Technology (MoIT), the Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB), and the Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA).

Since 2020, the PTA has registered over 20,000 IP addresses for VPNs under this program. The registration process, now simplified through the one window operations, is accessible via the PTA and PSEB websites. This move comes amid growing concerns about the regulation of VPNs in Pakistan, especially after recent reports suggested a possible ban on these services.

Earlier in the month, PTA Chairman Hafeezur Rehman addressed the Senate’s Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat, confirming that the PTA was whitelisting VPNs through an automated process. This whitelisting ensures that only authorized VPNs will be accessible in the country, aiming to maintain the smooth functioning of IT services and online businesses. The PTA clarified that no blanket ban on VPNs had been implemented, and any blocking of services is carried out strictly under the directions of the government, following legal guidelines.

The PTA’s actions have sparked concerns within Pakistan’s IT sector and among internet users. Many have criticized the move, linking it to broader government efforts to control internet usage through mechanisms like a national internet firewall, which could filter out unwanted content. This criticism has been exacerbated by ongoing internet disruptions across the country, attributed to damage to a submarine cable that is not expected to be repaired until early October.

The slowdown in internet connectivity has been widely blamed on the purported testing of internet control measures, including the restriction of VPNs. The government, however, has pointed to the increased use of VPNs as a contributing factor to the slowdown, adding to the controversy surrounding internet freedom and access in Pakistan.

As Pakistan navigates these challenges, the balance between ensuring secure, legitimate business operations and maintaining internet freedom remains a contentious issue. The ongoing registration of VPNs under the PTA’s new framework will be closely watched, particularly by those in the IT sector who rely on uninterrupted and secure internet access for their work.

Musk’s X anticipates a stoppage in Brazil as authorities demand responsibility.

The escalating conflict between Brazil’s Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes and Elon Musk has brought social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to the brink of being blocked in the country. The situation arose after Musk failed to comply with a court-imposed deadline to identify a legal representative in Brazil, a requirement under Brazilian internet laws.

Despite the looming threat of a shutdown, X was still operational in Brazil as of Friday morning. However, the platform acknowledged that it expected Moraes to issue a shutdown order “soon.” The legal standoff has drawn in President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who publicly criticized Musk for not respecting Brazilian law, emphasizing that no one, regardless of wealth, is above the law.

Musk, in turn, lashed out at Lula on social media, labeling the president as Moraes’ “lapdog” and calling the judge a “dictator.” Moraes, a key figure in Brazil’s judiciary, has been a vocal advocate for regulating social media to curb hate speech and protect democracy. While he has not provided a timeline for when he might block X, his stance has made it clear that he views accountability on social media as crucial.

Complicating matters further, the Brazilian Supreme Court has also frozen the local bank accounts of Starlink, a satellite internet service partially owned by Musk. Starlink plays a vital role in providing internet access to remote areas in Brazil, including isolated schools and hospitals. Musk has vowed that Starlink will continue to offer free services in Brazil until the situation is resolved and has accused the Brazilian government of illegally freezing the company’s accounts. The Brazilian military, which relies on Starlink for its operations, has warned that any disruption in service could have serious consequences.

If Moraes proceeds with blocking X, it would likely involve ordering telecommunication companies to stop carrying the platform’s traffic. However, users could potentially bypass this restriction using virtual private networks (VPNs). The outcome of this feud could have significant implications for both the future of social media in Brazil and the broader relationship between international tech companies and national regulations.

Harris Expands Lead Over Trump with Surge in Support Among Women and Hispanics

In the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll, Vice President Kamala Harris has expanded her lead over former President Donald Trump to 45% versus 41%, showing a four-point advantage compared to the slim one-point lead she held in late July. The poll, conducted over eight days ending Wednesday, has a 2% margin of error and indicates a significant shift in voter support since Harris officially entered the presidential race.

Harris’s increased lead is particularly notable among women and Hispanic voters. She now holds a commanding 13-point advantage over Trump among these groups, leading 49% to 36% among women and Hispanics. This is a substantial increase from her previous nine-point lead among women and six-point lead among Hispanics reported in July’s polls. The gains among these demographics are critical as they have historically played a significant role in election outcomes.

Conversely, Trump maintains his lead among white voters and men, although the margin is consistent with earlier polls. His advantage among voters without a college degree has narrowed to seven points from 14 points in July, suggesting a slight shift in support that could be influential in key battleground states.

The shift in the race comes in the wake of President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the 2024 election on July 21, following a poor debate performance against Trump that led to increased pressure from fellow Democrats. Harris’s entry into the race has generated new enthusiasm among Democratic voters, with 73% of registered Democrats expressing heightened excitement about voting in November since her candidacy was announced.

The impact of Harris’s campaign is evident not just in national polls but also in swing states, which are crucial for securing an Electoral College victory. While the national lead is promising for Harris, the final outcome will hinge on performance in these critical states.

Republican strategist Matt Wolking, who worked on Trump’s 2020 campaign, acknowledges that Harris’s improved numbers present a more challenging scenario for Trump. He suggests that Trump needs to maintain focus and avoid alienating potential supporters who might be inclined toward him due to dissatisfaction with Biden.

The poll period partially overlapped with the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago, where Harris formally accepted her party’s nomination. The enthusiasm generated during this period may have contributed to her current polling advantage, though it remains to be seen if this momentum will sustain through the election.

Overall, the widening lead for Harris reflects a dynamic shift in the presidential race, with her gaining significant ground among key voter demographics while Trump’s support remains strong among his traditional base. As the election approaches, the effectiveness of Harris’s campaign strategy and Trump’s responses will be critical in shaping the final results.

Bangladesh hopes to win its first series against the Afridi-less Pakistan

Bangladesh is on the verge of achieving a historic milestone in cricket as they aim for their first-ever Test series victory over Pakistan. The second Test is set to commence at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Friday, with the visitors looking to build on their impressive performance in the first match.

In the opening Test, Bangladesh achieved a remarkable ten-wicket victory over Pakistan, marking their first win in a Test match against the hosts in over 14 encounters. This victory was particularly notable given that Pakistan, usually a formidable team at home, struggled to cope with Bangladesh’s clinical performance. The win has energized the Bangladeshi squad and bolstered their confidence heading into the second Test.

For Pakistan, the series has been challenging, compounded by a recent string of poor performances. The team exited early from this year’s T20 World Cup and suffered a whitewash in a three-match Test series during their tour of Australia. The absence of Shaheen Shah Afridi, the star pacer, from the second Test is a significant blow. Afridi has been left out to allow him some time with his new-born son and family. Pakistan’s head coach, Jason Gillespie, acknowledged the challenge of playing without Afridi but emphasized the need to find the best possible combination for the team.

Gillespie’s strategy for the second Test includes recalling spinner Abrar Ahmed, who was not part of the first Test’s all-pace attack. The decision reflects a shift in approach, aiming to bolster the bowling lineup with spin options to counter Bangladesh’s batting strength.

Despite the setback of Afridi’s absence, Gillespie remains optimistic. He highlighted the importance of playing positively and being aggressive with both batting and bowling. His focus is on scoring singles, being ruthless with the ball, and challenging the opposition’s batters. Gillespie also expressed confidence in the leadership of Shan Masood, who struggled in the first Test with scores of six and 14. Masood has yet to win a Test match as captain, but Gillespie believes in his positive approach and ability to lead the team effectively.

On the other hand, Bangladesh’s head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe is optimistic about continuing their strong performance. The morale within the Bangladesh camp is high, and Hathurusinghe emphasized that defeating Pakistan in their home conditions is a significant achievement. The team’s confidence is buoyed by their dominant performance in the first Test, where they amassed a record total of 565 runs, with a standout innings of 191 from veteran batter Mushfiqur Rahim. Bangladesh’s bowlers, including spinners Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Shakib Al Hasan, played a crucial role in dismantling Pakistan’s batting lineup, which was a key factor in their victory.

Hathurusinghe is aware that the second Test will be a tougher challenge, acknowledging Pakistan’s strength and the competitive nature of the series. He expects a strong fight from the hosts but is confident in his team’s ability to maintain their form.

Bangladesh’s pace attack will also be reinforced by the return of experienced fast bowler Taskin Ahmed, who has recovered from a shoulder injury. Ahmed’s return adds depth to the bowling unit, though he will compete with Nahid Rana for a spot in the playing eleven.

The match preparations have been hampered by intermittent rain and bad weather in Rawalpindi, which prevented both teams from having a practice session. Despite these conditions, both teams will be keen to make the most of the opportunity and secure a decisive outcome in the second Test.

As the teams prepare to take the field, all eyes will be on Bangladesh to see if they can continue their momentum and secure a historic series win, while Pakistan will be aiming to bounce back and level the series.

Olympian Arshad Nadeem receives Hilal-e-Imtiaz from President Zardari

Shaheen Afridi was dropped from the Bangladeshi team’s second Test.

The Pakistan cricket team has made a notable change for the second Test against Bangladesh, which is set to begin at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on August 30. Shaheen Afridi, the left-arm pacer and a key figure in Pakistan’s bowling attack, has been dropped from the squad. The announcement was made by Pakistan’s red-ball head coach, Jason Gillespie, during a press conference held on Thursday.

Afridi’s removal from the squad has raised eyebrows, especially given his prominent role in Pakistan’s recent matches. The decision comes in the wake of Pakistan’s defeat in the first Test of the series. In that match, Bangladesh achieved a historic victory over Pakistan, marking their first-ever Test win against the Green Shirts. On the final day of the Test, Bangladesh’s bowlers dismantled Pakistan’s batting lineup, dismissing them for 146 in their second innings. The Bangladeshi openers, Zakir Hasan and Shadman Islam, then successfully chased down the modest target of 30 runs in just 6.3 overs to secure the win.

Afridi’s exclusion from the second Test is attributed to multiple factors, according to Gillespie. The head coach mentioned that Afridi has been working on technical aspects of his bowling to enhance his effectiveness. Additionally, Afridi has been participating in all three formats of international cricket for Pakistan and recently welcomed his first child. Gillespie emphasized the importance of allowing Afridi some time to be with his family during this period. This personal and professional balance is considered crucial for maintaining the player’s overall well-being and performance.

In Afridi’s absence, the Pakistan team has made adjustments to their squad. Spinner Abrar Ahmed and left-arm pacer Mir Hamza have been included in the 12-member squad for the upcoming Test. This change signifies a strategic shift by the team management, as they aim to strengthen their bowling attack and adapt their approach for the crucial second Test.

The revised 12-member squad for the second Test is as follows: Shan Masood (captain), Saud Shakeel (vice-captain), Abrar Ahmed, Mohammad Ali, Salman Ali Agha, Saim Ayub, Babar Azam, Mir Hamza, Mohammad Rizwan (wicketkeeper), Abdullah Shafique, Naseem Shah, and Khurram Shehzad. The inclusion of Abrar Ahmed and Mir Hamza reflects the team’s intent to diversify their bowling options and address the challenges faced in the first Test.

Shan Masood, who is leading the team, will need to rally his players and strategize effectively to level the series. With the addition of Ahmed and Hamza, Pakistan’s bowling attack will include a mix of spinners and pace options, potentially providing a more balanced and adaptable approach to counter Bangladesh’s batting lineup.

The second Test represents a critical opportunity for Pakistan to bounce back and regain momentum in the series. The changes in the squad, including Afridi’s temporary exclusion, are part of the team’s broader strategy to address the issues observed in the first Test and to put forth a stronger performance.

As the Test match approaches, the focus will be on how the new squad configuration performs and whether they can adapt their game plan to overcome the challenges posed by the Bangladeshi team. The Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium will be the venue where Pakistan seeks redemption and aims to showcase their resilience and capability in the face of adversity.

The City of Light hosts the Paris Paralympics.

The Paris Paralympics have officially opened in the City of Light, marking a historic moment for the global sports community. The event, which brings together athletes with disabilities from around the world, promises to be a celebration of human determination, resilience, and the unifying power of sports. As Paris welcomes a new generation of Paralympians alongside seasoned veterans, the city is set to showcase the remarkable talents of these athletes in venues that only weeks ago hosted the Olympic Games.

The opening ceremony, held at the iconic Stade de France, was a dazzling display of French culture and a tribute to the indomitable spirit of the Paralympic movement. Thousands of spectators, including dignitaries, athletes, and fans, gathered to witness the beginning of what promises to be an inspiring and competitive Games. The ceremony featured performances that highlighted the diversity and inclusivity of the Paralympic community, with a special emphasis on the theme of “Equality and Opportunity,” reflecting the broader social messages that the Paralympics embody.

Athletes from over 160 nations paraded into the stadium, each delegation representing the hopes and dreams of millions of people with disabilities. The parade was a powerful moment, with many athletes expressing their pride in representing their countries and their communities on the world stage. The event was further electrified by the lighting of the Paralympic cauldron, a symbol of the Games’ enduring flame of passion and perseverance.

The Paris Paralympics will be held in many of the same venues that hosted Olympic sports, including the newly renovated Stade de France, the Bercy Arena, and the iconic Champs-Élysées, which will host cycling events. These venues have been adapted to ensure accessibility for athletes, officials, and spectators with disabilities, demonstrating Paris’s commitment to inclusivity and universal design.

The competitions will feature a wide array of sports, from athletics and swimming to wheelchair basketball and para-cycling. This year’s Games are expected to see fierce competition across the board, as both newcomers and veteran athletes vie for medals. Notable events include the para-athletics competitions, which will take place at the Stade Charléty, and the swimming events at the Aquatics Centre in Saint-Denis.

In addition to traditional sports, the Paris Paralympics will also see the inclusion of new events, such as para-taekwondo and para-badminton, which have been added to reflect the growing diversity of Paralympic sports. These additions not only offer more opportunities for athletes to compete but also bring new excitement and audiences to the Games.

Among the athletes competing in Paris are several stars who have already made names for themselves in previous Paralympics. These include the likes of Brazilian swimmer Daniel Dias, who has won more than 20 Paralympic medals, and British wheelchair racer Hannah Cockroft, who has dominated her events for over a decade. These seasoned athletes will be joined by rising stars from around the world, such as American track and field athlete Ezra Frech, who is making his Paralympic debut at the age of 19.

The Paris Paralympics are also notable for the strong representation of female athletes, with women competing in every sport on the program. This reflects ongoing efforts by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) to promote gender equality in sports and to ensure that women with disabilities have the same opportunities to compete at the highest levels as their male counterparts.

The Paris Paralympics are not just about competition; they are also about leaving a lasting legacy for people with disabilities in France and around the world. The city has undertaken significant efforts to improve accessibility in public spaces, transport, and infrastructure, ensuring that Paris becomes more inclusive long after the Games are over.

Moreover, the visibility of the Paralympics helps to challenge stereotypes and change perceptions of disability. By showcasing the extraordinary achievements of Paralympians, the Games highlight the capabilities of people with disabilities and inspire millions to rethink what is possible. This cultural shift is perhaps the most important legacy of the Paralympic movement.

As the Paris Paralympics begin, the world is once again reminded of the power of sports to unite, inspire, and drive change. The City of Light, with its rich history and vibrant culture, provides a fitting backdrop for this celebration of human potential. Over the coming days, athletes will push the boundaries of what is possible, and in doing so, they will not only compete for medals but also contribute to a broader movement toward greater inclusion and equality for all.
