But sadly, this was just the beginning. An “Enough is Enough” rally was held in London on 31st July, promoted by both Tommy Robinson and Lawrence Fox in response to the knife attack in Southport. Hundreds of people largely men took to Downing Street, chanting far-right slogans like “stop the boats” and “we want our country back”. Officers of the Metropolitan Police were accused of being “traitors,” with bottles and abuse being hurled their way. Many in the rally were carrying English and British flags, others with bottles and glasses of beer in their hands.
Far-right organisations and individual influencers began to call for “protests” to be held across the country on the weekend of the 3rd and 4th August, with at least 25 to be held by the far-right and 5 by anti-racist counter-protesters. The police in places like Southport and Bristol have been bestowed with enhanced powers to deal with the outbreaks of violence, namely to stop and search suspects and to move on those who are likely to cause harm. The nascent Labour government also announced a new National Violent Disorder programme to reduce the violence, using police capabilities to share intelligence across the country to ensure arrests are made, local insight and data to understand where criminals are operating and facial recognition technology. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said: “let’s be very clear about this. It’s not a protest. It’s not legitimate. It’s crime and violent disorder. An assault on the rule of law and the execution of justice.”
There are many similarities between the so-called far-right “protests,” though the term “riot” seems more appropriate for those which have descended into violence and tyranny. A significant amount of the hatred has been aimed at Muslims, in part because fake news alleged that the Southport attacker was a Muslim. In addition to the one in Southport, two mosques were attacked in Liverpool, as was an Islamic Centre in Belfast. The use of Islamophobic slurs and rhetoric by the far-right have also been reported across the country.
Islamophobia is inherently tied to broader anti-immigration sentiment and racism, with many anti-Muslim hate crimes perpetuated because of the race of the victim. It was also alleged in the fake news that the Southport attacker was a recent asylum seeker, and so temporary asylum accommodation sites have been attacked by mobs with projectiles in Rotherham,Manchester, Aldershot and Tamworth. Arrests have been made for violence and attempts to encourage racial hatred.
But it would be wrong to suggest that all of this violence and racism boils down to the fake news around the Southport attacker’s identity. If this fake news was spread with the knowledge that it was indeed false, it should be described as disinformation. In this case, the Southport attack was undeniably used to garner hatred and violence towards Muslims, ethnic minorities, migrants and asylum seekers. There is no rational argument to be made that these riots can somehow be explained away as attempts to get justice for the three girls, the loss of whom has been unjustly overshadowed.
The Right Response Team at Hope Not Hate (an organisation which monitors racism and fascism in the UK with a view of challenging it) has suggested that Southport was merely the “trigger,” with the events planned for the weekend “expressive of a wider hostility to multiculturalism, anti-Muslim and anti-migrant prejudice, as well as a visceral streak of populist anti-government sentiment”. It also stated that the events reflect the “post-organisational nature of the modern far-right”.
While acknowledging the role of leaders associated with the English Defence League (EDL), the team stated that the far-right lacks formal leaders, relying instead on figureheads and social media influencers, particularly Tommy Robinson. After holding a mass rally in Trafalgar Square on 27th July, he fled the UK before he was due in court over alleged contempt of court proceedings, after he made a film repeating false claims about a Syrian refugee, which originally led to a libel case that he lost in 2021. The National discovered Robinson lounging at a 5-star resort in Cyprus while rioters egged-on by his rhetoric engaged in violence across the UK.
Leader of the Reform UK party, Nigel Farage, responded to the Southport attack by suggesting that the country was “unhappy with the state of law and order” and that there are “questions… Was this guy being monitored by the security services?” He further cast doubt over claims that this was non-terror related, asking “whether the truth is being withheld from us” before raising his hands and saying “I don’t know,” but that it was a “fair and legitimate question.” Given his influence as an elected MP with 2 million followers on X, this would have contributed to the conspiracy theories surrounding the Southport attack, distrust towards the police and anti-government populism.
This Islamophobia, anti-immigration sentiment and racism was sadly a mark of this year’s general election campaigning, particularly by Farage himself and the wider Reform UK party, through which it managed to secure five seats. Party leaders repeatedly blamed immigration for the poor state of public services and suggested that young British Muslims were opposed to ‘British values.’
Though the far-right would have us believe that torching hotels accommodating asylum seekers and a library in Liverpool, requiring the use of extra police resources and reconstruction, is an adequate response to this. Reform UK came third in terms of vote share after Labour and the Conservatives, yet won fewer seats than the Liberal Democrats, Scottish National Party and Sinn Féin because of the UK’s first-past-the-post system. This has likely exacerbated the sense of disillusionment among the supporters of Reform UK towards the government and other political parties.
But the Conservative party likewise has its share of the blame, with an inquiry having been conducted into Islamophobia and racism within the party; completed in May 2021. Regardless, it has since spearheaded policies that no doubt contributed to this anti-immigration and xenophobic sentiment, especially in light of its (thankfully) binned Rwanda scheme to deport asylum seekers to the country for processing. The former prime minister, Rishi Sunak, seemed dead-set on making the scheme a reality, despite challenges in the courts and the many, many concerns raised by human rights groups. One of Sunak’s home secretaries, Suella Braverman, demonised the British Pakistani community by suggesting that there was a “predominance” of that ethnic group among grooming gangs (though research shows such gangs are most commonly white), used dehumanising language about migration and referred to largely peaceful Palestine solidarity protests as “hate marches.” This can all be summarised as attempts to solidify support of the right within the Conservative Party itself.
While the state of things is a major cause for concern, our communities have come together against the far-right out of love and respect for one another. In Liverpool, a diverse group stood in front of a mosque as another group approached it, with one lady carrying a “Nans against Nazis” sign. Others were able to defuse tension by engaging in dialogue with protestors, including an imam called Adam Kelwick, who gave out food and said he would arrange a forum to discuss the issues concerning them. Hundreds of people stood in front of a hotel in Bristol that houses asylum seekers as an anti-immigration group marched towards it. The community in Sunderland came together to clean up the streets after rioting resulted in a police station being set on fire. These are the people who are truly proud of this country.
After multiple meetings to take steps for easing travel restrictions and convenience to religious pilgrimage, Pakistan and Iraq on Wednesday announced a slew of measures aimed at facilitating pilgrims travelling to Iraq for Arbaeen.
The landmark decisions were reached during a high-level meeting on Wednesday between Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Iraqi Ambassador Hamid Abbas Lafta who promised to make the journey smoother and more accessible for thousands of devotees.
Both sides agreed that Pakistani pilgrims travelling to Iraq for Arbaeen — the religious observance that occurs 40 days after the death of Imam Hussain (RA) on the 10th of Muharram and also known as Chehlum — would no longer need to surrender their passports upon arrival.
The meeting decided that the Pakistani pilgrims would be issued visas by the Iraqi Embassy, bypassing travel agents and the quota for Pakistan pilgrims would be increased.

It was also decided that special flights would be operating from Pakistan for Pakistani pilgrims while a new consulate will be opened in Karachi and both sides initiate a crackdown on agents charging excessive fees from pilgrims.
The meeting also decided to sign a visa waiver agreement on diplomatic and official passports while it was requested for the visa fee waiver for ordinary pilgrims.
The decisions aimed to provide equal facilities to Pakistani pilgrims, ensuring a hassle-free experience.
Naqvi thanked the Iraqi counterparts for their cooperation, while Ambassador Lafta extended an invitation to visit Iraq.
In a swift follow-up, Naqvi secured approval from Federal Aviation Minister Khawaja Asif to allow Iraqi airlines to operate special flights, with Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) also set to announce its schedule soon.
This development marks a significant improvement in travel arrangements for Pakistani pilgrims, promising a more convenient and accessible journey to Iraq.
Prior to these decisions, both countries mulled over options to make it easier and more affordable for Pakistani Muslims to travel to Iraq for religious pilgrimages in a previous meeting between Naqvi, Iraqi envoy and Minister of Overseas Pakistanis Chaudhry Salik Hussain last month.
The high-level engagement was focused on introducing free entry visas for Pakistani pilgrims and increasing the quota.
During the meeting, Islamabad raised serious concerns about travel agents charging pilgrims excessive fees and ensured to take action against those breaking the law.
Additionally, Pakistan and Iraq are working on a deal that will make it easier for Pakistani workers to obtain work permits in Iraq.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday filed a review petition in the Supreme Court against its short verdict in a reserved seats case involving the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC).
“Primary relief has been granted to the PTI,” the poll watchdog stated in its petition, adding: “[…] when neither the party nor persons claiming to be its candidates for reserved seats, nor any independent-returned candidates approached the ECP, the high court or the Supreme Court to claim any seat out of seats reserved for women or non-Muslims.”
The “impugned judgement” passed by the top court with a majority on July 12, 2024, should be reviewed as it was “not in accordance with the Constitution, law and the precedents of this Court,” said the poll organising authority.
The development came after the Supreme Court, in its July 12 short order in the reserved seats case, allowed the former ruling party to have reserved seats in assemblies, paving the way for the party to potentially become the largest parliamentary party.
The petition read that the apex court, in its “impugned judgement”, has presumed certain facts which were not established, or run contrary to, the pleadings and admitted facts on record.
The ECP petition maintained that 80 independent candidates had decided to join the SIC and submitted relevant documents to declare their allegiance with the party.
It added that the SIC did not participate in the February 8 nationwide polls as a political party nor submitted any list of candidates for the reserved seats.
It further stated that there was no reason to provide an opportunity to 41 independents for the party’s association and the July 12 verdict was “discriminatory” and “in favour of a political party”.
The judgment “have clearly been passed without considering that such directions outrightly discriminate in favour of a single political party by extending concessions and relaxing certain Articles of the Constitutions, laws and rules only to the extent of that single party”.
It added that the ECP was never given an opportunity to “rebut the presumptions”.
Highlighting clause (c) of sub-Article 1 of Article 4 of the Constitution, the ECP said: “Certainly, the order under review brushes this constitutional provision and imposes its own will to those of the SIC members who had already made a choice by submitting their declaration in favour of SIC and duly joined it.”
The development came after the ECP’s partially implemented the top court’s verdict by notifying 39 out of 80 Members of the National Assembly (MNAs) and 93 provincial assemblies’ lawmakers as the Imran Khan-founded party’s members last month.
The commission had also approached the Supreme Court last month to seek legal and constitutional guidance on the matter of the remaining PTI lawmakers in the national and provincial assemblies.
The commission had maintained that it was facing difficulty in implementing the order as the “PTI at the moment has no organisational structure for confirmation of the statements of MNAs and MPAs, purportedly belong to PTI”.
In another development, two judges of the top court — Amin-Ud-Din Khan and Naeem Akhtar Afghan — had issued a 29-page dissenting note against the reserved seats’ verdict and opposed granting relief to the Imran-founded party last week.
The jurists also raised questions over an “infructuous” delay in the release of the SC’s detailed verdict despite the expiry of 15 days.
The federal government also expressed concerns over the delay in the issuance of the detailed verdict of the Supreme Court’s July 12 ruling while calling for a discourse on the dissenting note of two judges.

‘House of the Dragon’ creator confirms new character entry in s3
Season two of House of the Dragon ends on an anticlimactic note however the last episode gives a hint at what is coming next.
It is, besides other eventful happenings, the arrival of a new Targaryen in the face of Daeron who was the fourth son of Queen Alicent Hightower.
Confirming his appearance, showrunner Ryan Condal said, “There’s a lot of stuff going on there, and I think some of this needs to be left to the future of the storytelling.”
He told Radio Times, “But I will say that the decision to expand Helaena’s character was that we, were fascinated by Alicent’s family and Aegon and Aemond, and certainly at some point in the story.”
“Even Daeron – the beloved, anticipated Daeron – get a lot of the screen time and and the storytelling time because they’re the males, they’re the dragon riding warriors.”
However, the creator the clairvoyant Helaena mostly drew his focus. “But Helaena was always fascinating to us because she was a bit of a tabula rasa, as described in the book.”
In the meantime, season three of the show was renewed before the release of the second.
“We are in awe of the dragon-sized effort the entire team has put into the creation of a spectacular season two, with a scope and scale that is only rivalled by its heart,” HBO’s head honcho Francesca Orsi noted.
“We could not be more thrilled to continue the story of House Targaryen and watch this team burn bright again for season three.”
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been advised to change their approach and focus more on their work than their past struggles.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Aliya Hamza has finally been released from prison on bail after a period of over one year after she was arrested in connection with May 9 violent protests broke out in the country last year.
The PTI stalwart was released from Gujranwala’s Central Jail after a district and sessions court in the approved her bail in the May 9 case on July 31.
A district and sessions judge in Gujranwala earlier today (Wednesday) also issued the politico’s release orders after she submitted surety bonds worth Rs50,000 in line with the Lahore High Court (LHC) order.
Earlier today, LHC Justice Ali Baqar Najafi restrained the law enforcement agencies from arresting the PTI leader in any new case until August 29.
The high court had also sought a report from the Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP) during the hearing of Aliya’s bail plea submitted by her husband to prevent her arrests in new cases.
Heavy contingents of police were deployed outside the central jail from where Aliya departed with her family.
The former National Assembly lawmaker is facing charges of involvement in anarchy, chaos and arson during the May 9 violent protests last year in which the government and military installations were targeted.
Aliya had secured bail in different cases multiple times in the past but she was immediately rearrested by police in other cases.
