Super 8: England wins the toss and chooses to bat first against the US

image 144

England won the toss and chose to field first against the United States in the crucial Super Eight match of the T20 World Cup 2024 being played at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, on Sunday.

England skipper Jos Buttler revealed the reason behind opting to bowl first saying that it is early morning. He also stated that the defending champions will be playing with full intensity as the USA are a good side and have played fantastic cricket.

“Early morning start, a bit tacky, that’s the reason,” said Jos Buttler. “Getting ready for the business end, a quick turnaround but everyone’s excited. Bring out full intensity today. Tough game, USA have played some fantastic cricket throughout the tournament but excited for first game against them.”

England made one change in their playing XI with Chris Jordan replacing speedster Mark Wood. Meanwhile, the USA are playing the same side that took the field against West Indies, which they lost.

The USA have lost both of their Super 8 matches against South Africa and then the West Indies and this match is nothing more than a dead rubber for them.

On the other hand, England started their Super 8 campaign with a thumping win over West Indies but they couldn’t keep up the same performance against the Proteas and now their chances of making it to the semi-finals are not that straight.

Another PTI MNA declares his own “loadshedding schedule” and forcibly restores the power.

image 141

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf lawmakers continue to make trouble for the electricity supply companies under the centre’s authority in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as another PTI MNA on Saturday night barged into a South Waziristan grid station and forcibly restored electricity supply to different areas.

A rift is going on between the province and federal government as KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur has allowed lawmakers to use force to restore electricity supply to feeders suffering from more than 12 hours of loadshedding.

Except for K-Electric, which was privatised in 2005, all the power distribution companies are owned by the Government of Pakistan, as the federal government deals with the power supply matter.

Tribal Areas Electricity Supply Company (TESCO) is responsible for supplying electricity in tribal areas, including North and South Waziristan, whereas Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) supplies power to the rest of the province.

Gandapur Friday warned the Shehbaz Sharif-led federal government that things could get out of hand if it does not reduce loadshedding to a maximum of 12 hours in his province.

Following the footsteps of his party’s lawmakers, the KP CM himself restored the electricity supply on the third day of Eid ul Adha.

With temperatures rising across the country as climate change shows its effects, power cuts have become frequent and longer in some areas, leading to back-to-back protests.

After storming the Jandola grid station with his supporters a day earlier, MNA Zubair Khan Wazir announced his own loadshedding schedule as well.

“Electricity supply to FR Jandola and Upper Waziristan will continue for 12 hours and remain shut for 12 other hours,” the legislator said.

Wazir said his workers would stay at the grid station to switch on and off the power supply.

Police relocate 23 suspects in a swat lynching to a “unknown” place.

image 140

Police have arrested 23 suspects for their alleged involvement in the lynching and killing of a person along with the torching of Madyan Police Station in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Swat, police told Geo News Sunday.

The arrested individuals, the police said, have been shifted to an unknown location while efforts are underway to arrest others who were allegedly involved in the incident.

The development comes after a violent mob had beaten a local tourist to death on Thursday night after accusing him of desecrating the Holy Quran, and later set his body as well as the Madyan Police Station ablaze.

A day earlier, a report by a federal agency had revealed that the hotel management had asked the deceased, accused of blasphemy, to open the door.

The accused, the report added, had then opened the door and denied the allegations of blasphemy, after which the police took him to the police station — a move criticised in the report which termed it as a “grave” mistake.

The report further says that neither the station house officer (SHO) of the said police station took guidance from the higher-ups on the matter nor shifted the suspect to a “safe” spot.

Also, the absence of high police officials or political leaders during the mob violence also contributed to the loss, it added.

Furthermore, the report mentions that the accused was in police custody for around 40 minutes during which he denied the blasphemy allegations hurled against him.

The report said that an exchange of fire also took place between the mob and police during which 11 people and five cops sustained injuries. The mob set on fire the building of the police station, a police van, five other vehicles and two motorcycles, The News reported on Sunday.

However, Swat’s district police officer has expressed ignorance about any such report, saying the investigation in the case was still ongoing and its report will be sent to the IGP as well as the government.

Meanwhile, a joint investigation team (JIT) including Additional Inspector General Special Branch Kashif Alam and Additional IGP Investigation Alam Shinwari visited the place of the incident and collected evidence from the room of a local hotel where the deceased Sulaiman, a resident of Sialkot, was staying, The News reported on Sunday.

The JIT, established under Superintendent of Police Investigation Badshah Hazrat, will also have members from Intelligence Bureau, Special Branch and other departments.

Earlier, the DPO had said that members of the mob had been identified and “efforts for their arrest are underway”.

He said that two first information reports (FIR) had also been registered under the charges of blasphemy and damaging state property, respectively.

The official further said that the suspect was reportedly a drug addict and had been booked in a case of domestic violence on the complaint of his mother.

Met Office anticipates rain and thunderstorms in Karachi.

The weather forecast for Karachi and Sindh in the upcoming days and weeks suggests a shift from the scorching heat to potential rainfall, offering relief to residents after a prolonged period of dry and hot weather.

As of today, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) predicts a continuation of hot and humid weather in Karachi, with temperatures expected to reach a maximum of 39°C. Humidity levels are projected to rise up to 75%, contributing to the discomfort caused by the high temperatures. However, there is a silver lining in the forecast as the PMD also anticipates drizzle accompanied by thunderstorms later in the day. This weather pattern indicates a potential relief from the prevailing heat, albeit temporary.

Recent developments in the weather pattern have already brought some respite. Parts of Karachi experienced light showers on Friday, which provided a brief reprieve from the intense heat. Similarly, other areas in Sindh such as Larkana, Shikarpur, Shahdadkot, and Jacobabad also received rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms. This sudden change in weather was a welcome relief for the residents who endured a prolonged period of dry conditions and high temperatures.

Looking ahead, Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz has indicated a likelihood of “more than normal” rainfall in Sindh, including Karachi. This forecast raises hopes for substantial precipitation, which could significantly alleviate the prevailing heatwave conditions and replenish water reservoirs in the region. The onset of monsoon season is also eagerly anticipated, with expectations that it will commence in Sindh around July 5 or 6. In contrast, Punjab and Kashmir are expected to experience the monsoon slightly earlier, starting from June 29 or 30.

The monsoon season plays a crucial role in the agricultural and economic landscape of Pakistan, particularly in regions like Sindh and Punjab. Adequate rainfall during this period not only ensures sufficient water supply for crops but also helps in maintaining groundwater levels, which are vital for sustaining agricultural productivity throughout the year. Moreover, the cooling effect of rainfall during the monsoon season brings relief from the intense summer heat, improving overall living conditions for residents.

As Karachi and other parts of Sindh brace for potential heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in the coming weeks, it is imperative for residents and authorities to remain vigilant and prepared. Precautionary measures such as clearing drainage systems, securing loose objects that could be blown away by strong winds, and staying informed through official weather updates are essential to minimize the impact of adverse weather conditions. Local authorities should also be proactive in providing timely alerts and assistance to communities vulnerable to flooding or other weather-related hazards.

While Karachi currently faces hot and humid weather conditions, there is a promising forecast of rainfall and thunderstorms later today and a broader expectation of “more than normal” rainfall in the coming weeks. The anticipation of the monsoon season further enhances hopes for relief from the prolonged heatwave. As preparations continue and forecasts evolve, staying informed and proactive will be key to mitigating any potential risks associated with the changing weather patterns.

Operation Azm-i-Istehkam: A New Dawn in Pakistan’s Fight Against Terrorism

By Abid Ali Narejo

The federal government of Pakistan has initiated Operation Azm-i-Istehkam, a bold initiative that demonstrates a commitment to eliminating terrorism on a nationwide scale. This renewed counterterrorism effort is a symbol of the country’s will to fight extremism and ensure that its inhabitants live in peace. At a meeting on the National Action Plan (NAP) held by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s Central Apex Committee, all parties involved—provinces, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir—unanimously endorsed the initiative.

Operation Azm-i-Istehkam’s main goal is to combine and coordinate several initiatives in order to fight terrorism effectively and completely. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said in a press statement that “Azm-i-Istehkam will integrate and synergize multiple lines of effort to combat the menaces of extremism and terrorism in a comprehensive and decisive manner.”

The National Action Plan’s Foundation
On December 24, 2014, Parliament approved the 20-point National Action Plan (NAP), which had been previously established by the National Counter Terrorism Authority in conjunction with pertinent parties. The terrible terrorist attack on the Army Public School in Peshawar, which inspired the country to adopt a united front against terrorism, preceded this decision.

After the outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) broke their ceasefire with the government in November 2022, terror operations in Pakistan have returned, despite early victories, especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

In 2023, 789 terror incidents and counter-terror operations resulted in 1,524 violence-related deaths and 1,463 injuries in Pakistan, according to a security assessment by the Centre for Research and Security Studies. These figures indicate that the number of violent occurrences has reached a six-year high, highlighting the critical necessity for a redoubled effort in counterterrorism.

A thorough examination and renewed dedication

The Central Apex Committee evaluated the state of internal security and carried out a comprehensive assessment of the current counterterrorism campaign during the meeting. “The forum reiterated that the fight against extremism and terrorism is Pakistan’s war and is absolutely essential for the nation’s survival and well-being,” according to the PMO. The conference stressed that no organisation would, under any circumstances, be permitted to contest the authority of the state.

Integrating various initiatives is essential to Operation Azm-i-Istehkam’s success since it will identify and prioritise areas of the NAP’s implementation that need immediate attention. The plan depends on “full national consensus and system-wide synergy,” which means that all facets of the government apparatus and the general public must work together.

A Multifaceted Strategy for Combating Terrorism

The updated plan includes both active and passive interventions. Within the realm of politics and diplomacy, there will be a greater focus on regional collaboration to reduce the operational area available to terrorists. Law enforcement agencies and effective legislation that fills legal gaps that have previously impeded the prosecution of terrorism-related offences would complement the military forces’ kinetic activities.

Another pillar of the plan is socioeconomic, which aims to address the underlying causes of extremism by enhancing people’s living standards and offering economic possibilities. These programmes seek to establish a climate that supports social cohesion and dissuades radical impulses.

The campaign will be supported by initiatives to create a cohesive national narrative, which will play a significant role in the information sphere. The meeting also examined steps to guarantee the safety of Chinese nationals residing in Pakistan, an essential task considering the geopolitical and financial significance of Sino-Pak ties.

An All-Government Strategy

Speaking to the committee, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif underlined that fighting terrorism necessitates a whole-of-government strategy that includes not only the military but all state institutions. He emphasised how intricate the problem is, encompassing smuggling, drugs, criminality, extremism, and religious terrorism. As the principal job of all state entities, combating terrorism is our common responsibility. We have to crush it collectively; it’s not about you and me,” he declared.

In the battle against terrorism, the prime minister recognised the sacrifices made by local law enforcement agencies, civilians, and elected officials. He did, however, emphasise that it is a risky precedent to entrust the task only to the armed forces. The function of the provinces’ Counter Terrorism Departments must be proactive.
Beyond Measures of Kinetics
PM Shehbaz emphasised the need for non-kinetic measures as well, like as public awareness campaigns, dialogues, dispelling false narratives, and fortifying law enforcement. He urged the religious and political elite to understand that Pakistan’s survival depends on winning this war.

In summary

A major advancement has been made in Pakistan’s continuous war against terrorism with Operation Azm-i-Istehkam. The country seeks to ensure a peaceful future by implementing a comprehensive, multifaceted strategy that incorporates military, socioeconomic, and informational initiatives. This campaign, which calls for cooperation and coordinated action from all facets of society, is not just a governmental but also a national undertaking. Pakistan is prepared to defeat the evil of terrorism and clear the path for peace and development with this revitalised approach.

T20 World Cup 2024: West Indies defeat US by 9 wickets in Super 8 matchup.

The Windies delivered a dominating performance to thump the United States by nine wickets in the Super 8 round of the T20 World Cup 2024 at the Kensington Oval in Barbados, Bridgetown, on Saturday. This victory provided a significant boost to their net run-rate, positioning them favorably in the tournament’s standings.

The West Indies won the toss and elected to bowl first, a decision that proved fruitful as they dismissed the United States for a modest total of 128 runs in 19.5 overs. The home side showcased a clinical bowling display, with Roston Chase emerging as the standout performer. Chase bowled brilliantly, finishing with figures of 3-19 in his four-over spell. His ability to take key wickets and maintain pressure was crucial in stifling the US batting lineup.

Supporting Chase, Andre Russell also made a significant impact with the ball, taking 3-31 in 3.5 overs. Russell’s pace and aggression were instrumental in breaking the backbone of the US innings, ensuring that the visitors never got the momentum needed to post a challenging total.

For the United States, opener Andries Gous was the top scorer with a quickfire 29 runs off 16 balls. His aggressive start gave the US a glimmer of hope, but the rest of the batting lineup struggled to build on this foundation. Nitish Kumar contributed 20 runs, trying to stabilize the innings, while Ali Khan remained unbeaten with a cameo of 14 runs off six balls towards the end.

The match was critical for both teams, as they had each lost their opening Super 8 matches, making this clash a virtual do-or-die contest. The pressure was evident, and the West Indies rose to the occasion magnificently.

Chasing a target of 129, the West Indies batsmen approached the task with remarkable aggression and confidence. They chased down the target in just 10.5 overs, an emphatic display that not only secured them the win but also significantly improved their net run-rate.

Openers Johnson Charles and Shai Hope set the tone early with a blistering start. Charles, known for his explosive batting, led the charge with a powerful knock, while Hope provided solid support. Together, they put the US bowlers under immense pressure from the outset. Nicholas Pooran, coming in at number three, continued the assault, ensuring there were no hiccups in the run chase.

The swift and dominant nature of their batting display underscored the West Indies’ intent to bounce back strongly in the tournament. This comprehensive victory was a testament to their depth and skill in the shortest format of the game.

The United States, despite their spirited effort, were outclassed by a superior West Indies side. Their bowlers struggled to contain the aggressive West Indian batsmen, and their fielding efforts could not compensate for the lack of sufficient runs on the board.

This match highlighted the disparities between the two sides, with the West Indies showcasing why they are considered one of the powerhouses in T20 cricket. Their ability to perform under pressure and deliver in crucial games is a hallmark of their cricketing prowess.

The teams were well-matched on paper, but the West Indies’ experience and quality shone through. The victory not only kept their hopes alive in the tournament but also sent a strong message to their competitors about their capabilities.

Teams:

United States (Playing XI): Steven Taylor, Andries Gous (w), Nitish Kumar, Aaron Jones (c), Corey Anderson, Milind Kumar, Harmeet Singh, Shadley van Schalkwyk, Nosthush Kenjige, Ali Khan, Saurabh Netravalkar

West Indies (Playing XI): Johnson Charles, Shai Hope, Nicholas Pooran (w), Roston Chase, Rovman Powell (c), Sherfane Rutherford, Andre Russell, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Gudakesh Motie, Obed McCoy

The West Indies’ emphatic win over the United States in the Super 8 round of the T20 World Cup 2024 was a showcase of their dominance in the format. Their clinical bowling performance and aggressive batting display were key to their nine-wicket victory, significantly boosting their net run-rate and reaffirming their status as a formidable T20 team. This victory not only revived their campaign but also highlighted the gap in class and experience between the two teams.

After T20 World Cup failure, Usman Shinwari advises resting Babar and Shaheen.

After Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the T20 World Cup 2024, Test fast bowler Usman Khan Shinwari has stirred up discussions by suggesting that senior players, including skipper Babar Azam and star pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi, should be given some rest. Shinwari believes the continuous play without adequate rest has adversely affected their performance, while also limiting opportunities for new talent to emerge. He highlighted that these senior players rarely sit on the bench, even in matches against lower-ranked teams like Zimbabwe, Bangladesh, and Ireland.

Shinwari’s comments are rooted in his observations that such an approach has restricted the national cricket team to a core group of around 15 players, effectively sidelining other potential talents from domestic circuits. This exclusion has forced many domestic players to seek opportunities abroad. “Because of them, the domestic cricketers are forced to emigrate,” Shinwari remarked, emphasizing the need to integrate more domestic players into the national team setup.

Shinwari, currently residing in the United States, also critiqued the selection process, arguing that performance in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) should not be the sole criterion for national team selection. His statements come in the wake of Pakistan’s elimination from the T20 World Cup, where their performance fell significantly short of expectations. The national team did not qualify for the Super Eight, leading to widespread criticism from fans and experts.

In the group stage, Pakistan faced a shocking five-run defeat in a Super Over tie against debutants USA and lost to arch-rivals India by six runs. Their only victory came against Canada, whom they defeated by seven wickets on June 11. A subsequent match between the USA and Ireland was abandoned due to rain on June 14, allowing the USA to secure a crucial point and ending Pakistan’s chances of advancing in the tournament.

This poor performance has led to a significant backlash, with calls for introspection and restructuring within the team. The final group match against Ireland, which held no bearing on the tournament’s outcome, served merely as a formality before the squad returned home. The early exit has fueled discussions on the need for a strategic overhaul and better management of player workloads to prevent burnout and ensure peak performance during crucial matches.

In contrast to the national team’s struggles, several Pakistani players have secured contracts with the Global T20 Canada League. This move is seen as an effort to stay competitive and in form despite the national team’s recent failures. The league, featuring six teams, is set to begin on July 25. Notably, four Pakistani players—Babar Azam, Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Rizwan, and Asif Ali—will represent the Vancouver Knights. Shaheen Shah Afridi and Mohammad Nawaz have signed with the Toronto Nationals, while Iftikhar Ahmed will play for the Bangla Tigers.

This participation in the Global T20 Canada League reflects the players’ desire to remain active in competitive cricket and perhaps offers a respite from the intense scrutiny faced at home. However, Shinwari’s pointed remarks about the current state of Pakistani cricket suggest that deeper systemic issues need addressing. His call for resting senior players and providing opportunities for emerging talents could be a step towards building a more robust and dynamic team capable of performing consistently at the international level.

The discussion initiated by Shinwari underscores a broader need for balance between nurturing experienced players and fostering new talent. As the cricketing world evolves, Pakistan must adapt its strategies to maintain competitiveness and uphold its rich cricketing heritage. Shinwari’s candid assessment and the subsequent debate it has sparked may well serve as a catalyst for the necessary changes in the team’s management and selection policies, ensuring a more inclusive and performance-oriented approach in the future.

King Charles wants a ‘opportunity’ to ‘make memories’ with Archie and Lili amid disease.

King Charles is reportedly eager for an opportunity to spend more time with his grandchildren, Archie and Lilibet, as he faces the ongoing challenges of his cancer diagnosis. Sources close to the royal family indicate that the king sees this time as crucial for building lasting memories with his grandchildren, who live primarily in the United States with their parents, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

The king’s desire to connect more closely with Archie and Lili comes at a poignant time. His cancer diagnosis, while not publicly detailed, has undoubtedly added a sense of urgency and reflection to his personal and familial relationships. Friends and family members have noted that King Charles is more conscious than ever of the importance of cherishing moments with his loved ones.

Archie, born in 2019, and Lilibet, born in 2021, have spent most of their lives away from the traditional royal setting, growing up in California. Their relative distance from the UK has meant fewer opportunities for King Charles to bond with them in the ways he might have hoped. With health concerns now at the forefront, the king is reportedly keen to bridge this gap and create meaningful interactions with his grandchildren.

Despite the physical distance, King Charles has maintained a warm interest in Archie and Lili’s upbringing. He has been involved through video calls and messages, staying updated on their milestones and daily lives. However, this digital connection, while valuable, is not a substitute for in-person experiences, which the king deeply desires.

King Charles’s wish to foster these familial bonds also reflects broader themes of reconciliation and unity within the royal family. The relationship between Prince Harry and the rest of the royal family has been strained, particularly following Harry and Meghan’s departure from royal duties and their subsequent relocation to the United States. The king’s health situation might present a unique opportunity to mend fences and bring the family closer together.

The desire for closer ties with Archie and Lili extends beyond King Charles to the entire royal family. There is a shared sentiment among the royals about the importance of family unity, especially during challenging times. Other family members have echoed the king’s sentiments, expressing hope that the situation could lead to more frequent visits and interactions with the young children.

Moreover, King Charles’s focus on creating memories with his grandchildren is seen as part of his broader legacy. Known for his deep commitments to various causes and his significant role within the monarchy, the king now seems equally dedicated to his role as a grandfather. Ensuring that Archie and Lili have personal, cherished memories of their grandfather is a priority that aligns with his values of family and continuity.

The logistics of making these visits happen are still being navigated. Travel arrangements and schedules need to be coordinated to facilitate more frequent and meaningful visits. There is optimism within the royal circles that these efforts will bear fruit, allowing the king to spend quality time with his grandchildren, despite the geographical challenges.

As King Charles continues to manage his health, the support and solidarity of his family are crucial. The entire royal family’s commitment to supporting the king and fostering strong familial bonds is a testament to their resilience and unity. This period, though challenging, presents an opportunity for healing and connection that could leave a lasting positive impact on the family dynamics.

King Charles’s current focus on building memories with Archie and Lili amid his cancer battle highlights his deep familial devotion and the broader royal family’s commitment to unity and reconciliation. As he faces his health challenges, the opportunity to connect with his grandchildren offers both comfort and a chance to strengthen familial ties in meaningful ways.

Why isn’t Neymar playing in the Copa America 2024?

Neymar, the iconic Brazilian forward, has been a notable absentee in the Copa America 2024, raising questions and speculations among fans and analysts alike. Neymar’s absence from this prestigious tournament stems from a combination of factors, primarily revolving around injuries, fitness concerns, and the broader strategy of his club and national team management.

Neymar’s football career, although illustrious, has been frequently marred by injuries. Leading up to the Copa America 2024, Neymar suffered a significant ankle injury during a Ligue 1 match for his club, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). This injury, which initially appeared minor, turned out to be more severe, requiring extended recovery and rehabilitation. The medical team at PSG, in collaboration with the Brazilian national team doctors, assessed that forcing a premature return could risk aggravating the injury, potentially sidelining Neymar for an even longer period.

The decision to prioritize Neymar’s long-term health and career over immediate participation in Copa America was not made lightly. The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) and PSG both recognized the player’s immense value and opted for a cautious approach. Given Neymar’s history of injuries, particularly with recurring issues in his foot and ankle, the consensus was that ensuring complete recovery was paramount. The timeline for his rehabilitation extended beyond the start of the tournament, making his participation impractical.

Moreover, Neymar’s fitness was another critical consideration. After an injury, returning to peak physical condition requires not only healing but also rigorous physical training to regain match fitness. Neymar, known for his explosive speed and agility, relies heavily on his physical attributes, and any compromise on these could affect his performance and increase the risk of re-injury. The medical and coaching staff decided that it would be unwise to rush his return, which could jeopardize his readiness for the upcoming club season and other international commitments.

Another aspect influencing Neymar’s absence is the strategic planning by both PSG and the Brazilian national team. PSG, aiming for success in both domestic and European competitions, needed Neymar to be fully fit and available for the crucial stages of their campaigns. Similarly, the Brazilian national team, looking ahead to future tournaments such as the World Cup qualifiers and the World Cup itself, preferred a fully fit Neymar over one risking further injury.

Neymar’s absence has undoubtedly impacted the Brazilian squad in the Copa America. His creativity, experience, and leadership on the field are irreplaceable. The team has had to adapt and rely on emerging talents and other experienced players to fill the void left by their star forward. While this presents an opportunity for others to shine, Neymar’s unique flair and ability to change the course of a game with a moment of brilliance are sorely missed.

Fans and pundits have expressed mixed reactions to Neymar’s absence. While some understand and support the decision prioritizing his long-term health, others are disappointed not to see one of football’s most exciting talents in action in such a major tournament. The sentiment underscores the high expectations and emotional investment that Neymar commands among supporters and the football community at large.

Neymar’s non-participation in Copa America 2024 is a result of pragmatic decisions focused on his injury recovery and overall fitness. While his absence is a significant blow to the tournament and the Brazilian team, the cautious approach taken by PSG and the CBF aims to ensure that Neymar returns to the pitch fully fit, minimizing the risk of future injuries and ensuring his availability for key future competitions. This period of absence, though disappointing, is a necessary step in managing Neymar’s career longevity and sustained performance at the highest level.

T20 World Cup 2024: India sets a 197-run target for Bangladesh in Super 8

In a thrilling encounter at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua and Barbuda, India set a formidable 197-run target for Bangladesh in their second Super 8 match of the T20 World Cup 2024. Hardik Pandya’s unbeaten 50 off 27 balls, capped by a four off the last ball of the innings, played a crucial role in bolstering India’s total.

Opting to bat first after losing the toss, India got off to an aggressive start with openers Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli leading the charge. Rohit, the Indian skipper, wasted no time, smashing a quickfire 23 off just 11 balls before falling to a delivery from Bangladesh’s experienced all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan. Despite this early setback, India managed to score 53 runs in the powerplay, their best powerplay performance in this tournament.

However, Bangladesh, known for their resilient cricket, pulled things back effectively through Tanzim Hasan Sakib. Sakib struck twice in quick succession, removing the in-form Virat Kohli for 37 and Suryakumar Yadav for 6 within three deliveries. These crucial breakthroughs left India reeling and put the brakes on their scoring rate.

Amid the chaos, wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant played a pivotal role, stabilizing the innings with a brisk 36 off 24 balls. His knock, featuring four boundaries and two sixes, was instrumental in keeping the scoreboard ticking. Pant’s aggressive yet controlled batting provided a much-needed boost to the Indian innings during a critical phase.

Following Pant’s departure, all-rounders Shivam Dube and Hardik Pandya took charge. The duo formed a vital 53-run partnership for the fifth wicket, steering India towards a competitive total. Dube, known for his powerful hitting, contributed 34 runs off 24 balls, including three towering sixes. His aggressive approach complemented Pandya’s calculated aggression perfectly.

The highlight of the innings was undoubtedly Hardik Pandya’s explosive batting towards the end. Pandya, who remained unbeaten on 50 off 27 balls, showcased his ability to handle pressure and finish the innings on a high note. His innings was studded with boundaries and smart running between the wickets. The crowning moment came when Pandya struck a four off the final ball of the innings, propelling India to a challenging total of 196/6.

Earlier, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto had expressed hopes of restricting India to a total between 150-160 runs. However, despite their best efforts, the Tigers found it challenging to contain the aggressive Indian batting lineup. Tanzim Hasan Sakib was the pick of the bowlers for Bangladesh, with his crucial strikes and tight bowling spells. Mustafizur Rahman and Shakib Al Hasan also put in commendable efforts, but the collective batting strength of India proved to be too formidable.

Bangladesh’s decision to bowl first stemmed from a strategic understanding of the conditions, with Shanto citing the wind factor and familiarity with the pitch. On the other hand, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma mentioned that he would have chosen to bat regardless of the toss, reflecting confidence in his team’s batting depth and strategy.

The match saw both teams fielding strong lineups. India went with an unchanged XI from their previous match, maintaining continuity and confidence in their winning combination. Bangladesh, meanwhile, made a tactical change by including Mustafizur Rahman in place of Taskin Ahmed.

Historically, India has dominated the T20I encounters against Bangladesh, winning 12 out of the 13 matches played between the two sides. This strong record added an additional layer of psychological advantage for India going into the match.

As India set a daunting 197-run target, the stage was set for an exciting chase by Bangladesh. The men in blue, buoyed by their aggressive batting and strategic gameplay, aimed to consolidate their position in the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2024. The match not only highlighted individual brilliance, particularly from Hardik Pandya, but also showcased the collective strength and resilience of the Indian team.

I feel it incumbent and pertinent to mention that in the recent Israeli aggression on the innocent civilians of Gaza Stip/ Palestine, your humanistic role to stop the genocide of the Palestinians and immediately end the war, has been highly appreciated by all lovers of peace around the world.

As you are the custodian of human rights and according to the Charter of UN, it is the duty of UN to protect human rights of all nations and maintain peace, it is strongly appealed that you should take notice of the killings of the innocent Muslims of Mayanmar.

As you had visited Israel and had talks with the Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu, it is expected from a great humanitarian and stalwart of peace like you, to visit Mayanmar and take the notice of the killings of innocent Muslims. It is mentioned with heavy heart that unfortunately, the world does not go along with moral pressure, it moves ahead with military might. Might is Right is the law of jungle which prevails still and humanity is trampled under feet.

I see the fate of UN like the fate of The League of Nations, as it has no military force to execute and expedite the orders and establish peace and punish the perpetrators.

Under such circumstances, if the UN will not take legal action against the oppressors like annulment and canceling the membership of the aggressive country and will act as a partizan under the influence of some influential countries , then it is bound to collapse.

The video of brutal killing of a Muslim girl can be shared with you, if the WhatsApp phone number of your office or representative is sent to me. I hope you will take serious action against this brutality of the military action against an innocent girl. We must suppress racial and religious discrimination and prejudice for the better future of mankind.

Positive Steps towards Regulating Social Media

By: Abdul Basit Alvi

In response to the harmful effects of misinformation, numerous countries have enacted strict regulations and penalties to counter the spread of false propaganda across various media platforms, including social media.

China is widely recognized for its rigorous control over online content through the Great Firewall, a sophisticated system of internet censorship. The Chinese government actively monitors and regulates social media platforms, websites, and online forums to curb the dissemination of false information perceived as detrimental to national security or social stability.

Furthermore, China has implemented cybersecurity laws that impose severe consequences, including fines and imprisonment, on individuals or entities found guilty of spreading false propaganda or inciting social unrest online. These steps are necessary to uphold social order and safeguard the public from harmful misinformation.

Russia has enacted various laws and regulations to combat the spread of false propaganda and disinformation, particularly on social media platforms. The country’s anti-extremism legislation empowers authorities to crackdown on online content that promotes violence, hatred, or ethnic tensions. Additionally, Russia has introduced specific laws targeting the dissemination of false information, such as the Law on Information, Information Technologies, and Protection of Information.

Under these laws, individuals or entities found guilty of spreading false propaganda or disinformation may face significant fines, administrative penalties, or even criminal prosecution. Russia remains steadfast in its commitment to addressing perceived threats to national security and social stability posed by false information.

Turkey has implemented stringent regulations aimed at managing the spread of false propaganda and misinformation on social media platforms. In July 2020, the Turkish parliament passed a law mandating that social media companies with over one million daily users appoint local representatives and comply with government requests to remove content within 48 hours. Failure to adhere to these requirements can lead to fines, advertising bans, or bandwidth restrictions.

The Turkish government has justified these measures as necessary to combat the dissemination of false information and safeguard the public from online threats, including terrorism and defamation.

In response to the proliferation of false information and disinformation on social media platforms, Singapore has implemented the Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act (POFMA). Enacted in 2019, POFMA grants authority to government ministers to issue correction orders or removal notices for online content deemed false or misleading.

Platforms that do not adhere to these directives may be subject to fines and other consequences. Proponents assert that POFMA is essential for protecting public discourse and national security. Through POFMA, Singapore maintains its dedication to combating the dissemination of false propaganda and shielding its populace from the adverse effects of misinformation.

Germany has taken proactive measures to address online hate speech and false information through the enactment of the Network Enforcement Act (NetzDG). Established in 2017, NetzDG mandates that social media platforms with a user base exceeding two million promptly remove illegal content,

including hate speech, defamation, and incitements to violence, or face substantial fines. Additionally, platforms are required to publish regular transparency reports detailing their content moderation endeavors. NetzDG represents a significant stride in holding social media companies accountable for propagating false propaganda.

France has implemented a rapid response mechanism to counter false information during pivotal events such as elections. Through this system, government agencies, fact-checking organizations, and media outlets collaborate to swiftly debunk misinformation circulating on social media platforms.

This initiative aims to furnish voters with accurate information and mitigate the impact of false propaganda on electoral outcomes. Furthermore, France has enacted legislation empowering judges to mandate the removal of fake news disseminated online, bolstering efforts to combat misinformation.

In the United States, fact-checking initiatives play a pivotal role in combating false propaganda on social media. Nonprofit organizations like FactCheck.org, PolitiFact, and Snopes independently verify the accuracy of online information and debunk false claims.

Social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter have collaborated with these fact-checkers to flag disputed content and diminish its visibility in users’ feeds. While fact-checking endeavors in the U.S. are voluntary and decentralized, they serve as a crucial resource for users seeking reliable information amidst the abundance of online misinformation.

Within every nation lies a cohesive fabric woven from threads of resilience, pride, and hope. For the people of Pakistan, this fabric finds embodiment in the nation itself and its esteemed armed forces, serving as pillars of strength and guardians of sovereignty. Pakistan, with its diverse tapestry of cultures, languages, and traditions, acts as a unifying force for its citizens, symbolizing collective identity and national pride that transcends regional, ethnic, and linguistic boundaries.

The green and white flag, proudly fluttering in the breeze, serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by past generations and the aspirations of those to come. At the core of Pakistan’s defense and security apparatus stands the Pakistan Army, an institution revered for its professionalism, discipline, and steadfast dedication to serving the nation.

Alongside the Pakistan Navy and Pakistan Air Force, it forms the bulwark against external threats and internal challenges, safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Its presence imbues a sense of security and reassurance among the populace, ensuring their safety amidst an uncertain world. Throughout Pakistan’s history, the armed forces have played a pivotal role in upholding democracy and constitutional order.

During periods of political turmoil and crisis, the Pakistan Army has emerged as a stabilizing influence, ensuring the continuity of governance and safeguarding democratic institutions. Its adherence to democratic principles and civilian authority underscores its position as a guardian of the nation’s democratic ideals. Beyond its traditional defense and security functions, the Pakistan Army actively participates in national development endeavors.

From spearheading infrastructure projects to providing humanitarian aid and disaster relief, the armed forces lead initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of life for Pakistan’s citizens. Whether constructing vital infrastructure in remote regions or offering medical assistance to communities struck by disasters, the Pakistan Army remains steadfast in its commitment to serving the people and fostering the nation’s progress as a whole.

For the youth of Pakistan, the Pakistan Army stands as a beacon of inspiration and aspiration. Its values of discipline, sacrifice, and devotion to the nation deeply resonate with young Pakistanis, fostering within them a profound sense of duty and commitment to their homeland. Many young individuals aspire to join the ranks of the armed forces, eager to contribute to the defense and development of their cherished nation.

In today’s digital era, the influence of social media in shaping narratives and molding public opinion is undeniable. However, with this influence comes significant responsibility, as the uncontrolled spread of false propaganda can yield far-reaching repercussions, especially when directed towards nations and their esteemed institutions. Pakistan and its revered armed forces have frequently found themselves targeted by such deceitful campaigns, with consequences extending beyond the digital sphere.

There has been a noticeable surge in false propaganda against Pakistan and the Pakistan Army on social media platforms recently. It is disheartening to witness such malicious campaigns against the country and its armed forces, freely propagated. Many social media influencers, especially those residing in foreign countries, are advancing their own agendas or those of our adversaries by targeting Pakistan and its armed forces.

False propaganda on social media has the potential to sow seeds of discord and division within society, undermining the unity and cohesion crucial for national progress. By disseminating misinformation and fostering mistrust, malevolent actors endeavor to create rifts along ethnic, religious, or ideological lines, fracturing the social fabric of the nation. Such division weakens the collective determination of the people and impedes endeavors toward common goals and aspirations.

The Pakistan Army, revered for its professionalism and unwavering dedication to serving the nation, often finds itself the subject of false propaganda aimed at tarnishing its reputation and eroding public trust. When unfounded accusations and fabricated narratives gain traction on social media platforms, they can corrode the trust and confidence the people have in their armed forces. This erosion of trust not only undermines the morale of military personnel but also compromises the nation’s defense posture and resilience.

False propaganda against Pakistan and its armed forces on social media platforms can escalate tensions with neighboring countries and stoke external hostility. When misinformation is weaponized for geopolitical ends, it can exacerbate diplomatic crises and inflame conflict dynamics in volatile regions. Moreover, false narratives depicting Pakistan as a sponsor of terrorism or an international aggressor can provoke retaliatory actions from other nations, fostering a perilous cycle of escalation and instability.

The proliferation of false propaganda on social media can also inflict harmful consequences on Pakistan’s economy, discouraging foreign investment and impeding economic progress. In a globally interconnected landscape where perception frequently molds reality, adverse portrayals of Pakistan’s security environment or political stability may dissuade prospective investors and trading associates.

Consequently, these challenges impede endeavors aimed at job creation, poverty alleviation, and sustainable development, perpetuating the socioeconomic struggles faced by the nation. False propaganda on social media not only tarnishes Pakistan’s global reputation but also undermines its influence and credibility in international affairs. When Pakistan is depicted negatively through false narratives and sensationalized accounts, garnering support and solidarity from the international community becomes increasingly challenging. This diminishes Pakistan’s diplomatic leverage and obstructs efforts to address urgent global issues such as climate change, terrorism, and humanitarian crises.

As other nations worldwide implement stringent measures to combat anti-state and anti-army propaganda within their borders, Pakistan similarly asserts its right to regulate hate content on social media. The Pakistani populace has eagerly awaited decisive actions to curb the dissemination of false propaganda against Pakistan and its armed forces, and it is heartening to learn that the government has opted to implement a firewall to regulate social media.

The Pakistani government has reached an agreement with Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to install a firewall with a special Deep Packet Inspection capability. This feature enables the firewall to analyze data up to layer 7 and filter social media data, allowing it to block data at the IP level rather than the application level. Reports indicate that the firewall will identify propaganda points on social media and possess the capability to block propaganda points and IDs.

Furthermore, the installation of the firewall will be undertaken by ISPs, with the government covering a portion of the installation costs and ISPs bearing the remainder. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has also reached an agreement with ISPs regarding this initiative. The Ministry of Information Technology asserts that ISPs are obligated to block illegal content, while the installation of the firewall falls under the jurisdiction of the PTA.

The entire nation stands united in support of Pakistan and its armed forces, demonstrating unwavering love for the country and its defenders. The recent decision to combat anti-state, anti-army, and hate propaganda has been warmly received by the people of Pakistan. They firmly believe that such propaganda does not constitute freedom of expression, as they unequivocally reject any content that disparages Pakistan and its armed forces. Should such propaganda be deemed as freedom of expression then it is unacceptable by the people of Pakistan. The populace urges the expeditious implementation of these regulatory measures and mechanisms.

Unbroken Resolve: Pakistan’s Battle Against Terrorism and Afghan Complicity

By Javed Iqbal

The writer is a freelance columnist and writes on topics concerning national security.

Every incident of terrorism reminds us that the fight against terrorism has yet not ended. However, at the same time, it also strengthens Pakistan’s resolve against the enemy.

After the US forces withdrawal from Afghanistan, the terrorist activities in Pakistan gradually gained spike mainly due to the use of Afghan soil by TTP. The use of Afghan soil for terrorists activities inside Pakistan has been repeatedly brought into the knowledge of Afghan government as well as world community. The recent killing of Abdul Mannan alias Hakeemullah, in the Asadabad district of Afghanistan’s Kunar region has once again vindicated Pakistan’s stance. According to media reports, Abdul Mannan was a member of the TTP Malakand Shura, and right-hand man of TTP leader Azmatullah Mehsud. He played main role in shaping terrorist operations in Bajaur and was also involved in several terror activities in Pakistan including target killings, landmine blasts in Bajaur, firing at security check-posts and extortion since joining TTP in 2007.

As per media reports, Counterterrorism Department (CTD), intelligence agencies also detained several terrorists, including high-value and most wanted targets.

Amongst those apprehended included the most wanted commander of the TTP Khawarij’s Shura. According to the initial investigation by the agencies, the arrested terrorists have been involved in numerous activities against Pakistan besides having connections with domestic and international terrorists.

Pakistan has paid a very heavy price for fight against terrorism. The Pakistan Army with the support of nation has successfully defeated the menace of terrorism. No other army of the world has fought insurgency war at such level as Pak Army which speaks volume about its professional capability.

The Pakistan Army launched two large-scale operations: Zarb-e-Azab in 2014 and Radd-ul- Fasaad in 2017 with the aim to eliminate militant groups like the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Al-Qaeda, and other foreign and local insurgents. These two operations significantly disrupted terrorist networks and led to a decline in terrorist activities in Pakistan.

The main focus of military operation was to eliminate the residual and latent threat of terrorism. It included a countrywide effort to de-weaponize and ensure security through intelligence-based operations (IBOs).

The province of Balochistan has been the main focus of anti state elements activities. Recently, security forces also foiled an attempt to establish centres of the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in Balochistan by arresting the most wanted commander and several other members of the outlawed outfit in different areas of the province. According to the Counter Terrorism Department, they received information that the commander, who is also a member of TTP Shura, along with the other members of the outlawed outfit were attempting to establish their centres in different areas of the province.

The killing of terrorist Abdul Mannan and the foiling attempt to establish TTP centres in Balochistan with the support of BLA within a week are classic examples of Intelligence graft and professional capabilities of Intelligence Agency.

The Pakistan government has repeatedly shared evidence of TTP terrorism in Pakistan and its presence inside Afghanistan but Afghan government paid no heed and instead always remained in denial mode.

It is high time for Afghan government to follow Doha Accord in true letter and spirit that categorically states that Afghan soil will not be used for terrorism against any country. This is only possible if Afghanistan Govt rein in TTP.

Unholy Terror Nexus in Cross-hairs

Faisal Ahmad

Nerve breaking war against terrorism is testing the endurance limits of Pakistan. At state level, Pakistan has sent clear messages to interim Taliban government at multiple occasions underscoring genuine concerns about active presence of banned organization in safe havens on Afghan soil.

Swift elimination of terrorists, involved in Lakki Marwat IED blast, in an intelligence-based operation reflected the depth of resolve against terrorism. Intelligence quarters are fully alive to the security challenge as evident from the accuracy and promptness of retaliatory counter terrorism operations. Reports regarding the killing of notorious commander of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Abdul Manan aka Hakeemullah, in Kunar province  on third day of Eid has also sent a spine chilling warning to the terrorist networks operating from Afghanistan. Targeted killing of Manan aka Hakeemullah has served a substantial blow to the terrorist group, which seems bleeding amid internal strife among various splinter groups.

Eliminated commander Hakeemullah was closely associated with the TTP Malakand Shura and had also served as an aide to Wali, in master minding terrorist attacks in Bajaur area. He was deeply involved in targeted assassinations, landmine explosions, attacks on security checkpoints, and extortion.Significance of this killing has increased manifolds as it followed closely on the heels of the death of another TTP commander, Talha Swati, who was a key member of  the Fazlullah group from Swat. In April, notorious Swati was targeted by unknown assailants under mysterious circumstances in broad daylight after Friday prayers in the same province. Swati had been intelligence chief in the Bari Kot area and was allegedly involved in selling the information to rival militant factions like Jammatul Ahrar (JUA), South District Taliban and the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP).

As the motives behind Swati’s killing remainshrouded, all conflicting reports strongly point towards his possible elimination by any one of rival splinter group or affected victim of internal quarrel within the TTP itself. It is worth noting that affiliates of the Swati group pledged revenge which indicates worsening turf war between hardcore terrorist groups operating with impunity in Afghanistan.  Counter terrorism experts having closer watch on regional security affairs believe that superior intelligence craft of Pakistani agencies is playing key role in denting the terrorist networks operating with the support of hostile foreign players.

Recurring fatalities of high value wanted terrorist commanders underline the impulsive and disorderly nature of militant outfits especially undeniable waning of the TTP amidst ongoing turf war among the power-hungry splinter groups.Surging terrorism in KP and Baluchistan is precisely aimed at destabilizing the Pakistan. Potential economic development ofbackward areas in Baluchistan with the successful completion of CPEC would practically snatch the maneuvering space from hostile quarters. Indian agencies are deeply involved in patronizing the separatist anarchists to sabotage the CPEC .

As pointed out in previous article that brewing nexus between ethnically motivated anarchists and religious Jihadist groups in Baluchistan is a simple evidence of common handler. CTD Baluchistan has recently shared important information extracted during initial investigations from arrested TTP commander. Despite ideological gulf , TTP faction was solidifying alliance with non–religious separatist terrorist faction of banned  Baluch Liberation Army.

More startling revelations are expected from detailed investigations. No rocket science is involved in deciphering the involvement of Indian agencies in orchestrating the terrorism in Baluchistan. Irrespective of ideological differences, close cooperation among terrorist groups in Baluchistan is more meaningfully poised against growing strategic partnership between Pakistan and China. Nature of targets selected by the terrorists inside Baluchistan is an undeniable proof of extra-territorial intended objectives.

Durable restoration of peace is not possible until India quits the strategy of playing the role of regional spoiler.Unfortunately, interim Taliban government is not tackling the issue of terror proxies with requisite wisdom and caution. Kabul has so far badly failed in correctly reading the Pakistan’s zero tolerance policy towards all brands of terrorism. It is firmly believed that existence of anti-Pakistan terrorist groups on Afghan soil is not possible without the support of de-facto Taliban regime. Number of confessional statements of arrested terrorist commanders tell us the same story which was disclosed few years back by the Indian Naval officer Khal Bhoshan Jhadev. Indian state players’ hand behind anti-Pakistan terror proxies is beyond any doubt. These groups are mostly stationed in Afghanistan and enjoying full impunity as well as facilitation from ruling Taliban regime.

While the diplomatic channels are open to remove the security irritants with neighboring countries, no one should take it as the only option available with Islamabad. There are easily understandable messages coded in the recurring targeted killings of anti-Pakistan terrorist commanders of banned  TTP.

Compelled by the unavoidable security compulsions, Pakistan is capable  to dislodge the unholy nexus of terroristsbeyond its borders.

Transparency International supports the adoption of whistleblower protection laws.

Transparency International Stresses Adoption of Whistleblower Protection Laws

In a recent call to action, Transparency International (TI) has underscored the urgent need for the adoption and enforcement of robust whistleblower protection laws across the globe. The organization, renowned for its efforts to combat corruption and promote transparency, argues that whistleblowers are pivotal in uncovering wrongdoing and fostering accountability within both public and private sectors. However, the lack of adequate legal protections often leaves them vulnerable to retaliation, silencing those who could expose significant malfeasance.

Whistleblowers, individuals who report misconduct, fraud, or corruption, play a critical role in maintaining transparency and integrity. Their disclosures can lead to the recovery of billions of dollars in stolen or misused funds, the protection of public health and safety, and the exposure of unethical practices. Despite their importance, whistleblowers frequently face severe repercussions, including job loss, legal actions, and even threats to their personal safety. Transparency International emphasizes that without comprehensive legal safeguards, potential whistleblowers may be deterred from coming forward, allowing corruption and abuse to persist unchecked.

Delia Ferreira Rubio, Chair of Transparency International, stated, “Whistleblowers are the unsung heroes in the fight against corruption. Yet, in many countries, they risk everything to do what is right, often without any legal protection. It is imperative that governments enact and enforce laws that protect these individuals from retaliation and ensure their safety and livelihood.”

The call for stronger whistleblower protections comes in the wake of numerous high-profile cases where individuals who exposed wrongdoing faced significant backlash. In many instances, whistleblowers have suffered severe professional and personal consequences, underscoring the need for legislative action. Transparency International highlights several key components that effective whistleblower protection laws should include,

Laws should protect whistleblowers in both the public and private sectors, covering a wide range of potential disclosures, including corruption, fraud, human rights violations, and environmental damage.Establishing secure and confidential channels for reporting misconduct is crucial to protect the identities of whistleblowers and prevent retaliation.

Laws should explicitly prohibit any form of retaliation against whistleblowers, including dismissal, demotion, harassment, and discrimination. Robust enforcement mechanisms are needed to ensure compliance.

Whistleblowers should have access to legal and financial assistance to help navigate potential legal challenges and mitigate the personal and professional risks associated with whistleblowing.

Transparency International’s advocacy is supported by a growing body of evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of whistleblower protection in reducing corruption and improving governance. Countries with strong whistleblower laws tend to have lower levels of corruption and higher levels of public trust in government institutions. Conversely, in countries where whistleblower protections are weak or non-existent, corruption remains pervasive, and accountability mechanisms are often ineffective.

Several countries have made strides in this area. For instance, the United States has enacted comprehensive whistleblower protection laws, such as the Whistleblower Protection Act and the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. These laws provide robust protections and incentives for whistleblowers, resulting in numerous high-profile disclosures and significant recoveries of misappropriated funds.

However, many nations still lag behind. In some countries, whistleblowers are seen as traitors rather than protectors of public interest, and the legal framework offers little to no protection. Transparency International urges these countries to look to successful models and adapt their legislation accordingly, creating an environment where whistleblowers can come forward without fear of retribution.

Adopting comprehensive whistleblower protection laws is not only a legal requirement, but also a moral responsibility. Ensuring the safety of those who have the bravery to speak out against wrongdoing is critical to promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance. Transparency International’s call to action reminds us that fighting corruption requires the support and protection of individuals on the front lines. Pakistan’s First Human Milk Bank Initiative Suspended Following New Fatwa

In a significant setback to neonatal healthcare in Pakistan, the country’s first human milk bank initiative has been suspended following a new fatwa issued by religious scholars. The initiative, which aimed to provide life-saving breast milk to premature and critically ill infants, has come under scrutiny due to concerns about its compliance with Islamic laws.

The human milk bank, established in Karachi, was designed to support mothers who are unable to breastfeed their newborns due to medical complications. The project received considerable support from medical professionals and was seen as a crucial step in improving infant health outcomes. Breast milk is known to offer critical nutrients and antibodies that are essential for the survival and development of premature and sick infants. The milk bank aimed to collect, screen, and pasteurize donated breast milk and then distribute it to infants in need, ensuring that they receive the vital nutrition required for their growth.

However, the initiative faced opposition from various religious quarters almost from its inception. The primary concern raised was regarding the concept of milk kinship in Islam. According to Islamic jurisprudence, children who are breastfed by the same woman are considered milk siblings and are prohibited from marrying each other. This doctrine necessitates meticulous record-keeping to prevent any violations of Islamic law. Religious scholars expressed apprehensions that the milk bank could lead to inadvertent violations of these principles, given the complexities of tracking milk donations and recipients.

In response to these concerns, a fatwa was issued declaring the milk bank initiative incompatible with Sharia law. The fatwa emphasized the potential risks associated with milk kinship and the difficulties in ensuring that the milk distribution process adheres to Islamic principles. As a result, the authorities overseeing the milk bank had no choice but to suspend its operations indefinitely.

The suspension of the human milk bank has sparked a significant debate in Pakistan, highlighting the tension between medical advancements and religious beliefs. Health professionals have voiced their disappointment, stressing that the initiative was intended to save lives and improve health outcomes for the most vulnerable infants. Dr. Saima Ali, a leading neonatologist involved with the milk bank, expressed her frustration, stating that the suspension would have dire consequences for infants who rely on donor milk for their survival. “We understand and respect religious sentiments, but we must also consider the health and well-being of our children. There has to be a way to find a balance,” she said.

On the other hand, religious leaders and scholars argue that any medical initiative must comply with religious guidelines to be acceptable in a predominantly Muslim society. Mufti Shafiqur Rehman, one of the scholars who issued the fatwa, emphasized that the preservation of Islamic principles is paramount. “Our religion provides clear guidelines on matters of kinship and marriage. It is crucial that we adhere to these principles to maintain the integrity of our faith,” he remarked.

The controversy has prompted calls for a dialogue between religious scholars and medical professionals to find a feasible solution. Some suggest that a more robust system of tracking and documentation could address the concerns about milk kinship, ensuring that the milk bank operates within the bounds of Islamic law. Others propose that awareness campaigns be conducted to educate the public about the benefits of human milk banks and the safeguards that can be implemented to comply with religious requirements.

In the meantime, the suspension of the milk bank leaves a significant gap in neonatal care. Many infants who would have benefited from donor milk now face increased health risks. The situation underscores the need for innovative solutions that respect religious beliefs while also addressing critical healthcare needs.

The suspension of Pakistan’s first human milk bank exemplifies the intricate relationship between contemporary healthcare methods and religious beliefs. As the debate continues, it remains to be seen whether a solution can be achieved that will allow this life-saving endeavour to resume while honouring the community’s religious sensitivities.

Inflation after the budget shackles Rawalpindi

RAWALPINDI: Surge in Food Prices Post-Budget Announcement

The announcement of the federal and Punjab budgets for the fiscal year 2024-25 has triggered an unprecedented rise in the prices of essential food items in the open market. Prices of pulses, gram flour, and rice have reached historic highs, marking the highest levels in the country’s history. Even before the implementation of the proposed new taxes, negative impacts are already being observed in wholesale markets.

In many markets, the prices of essential food items have skyrocketed. Pulses and chickpeas have surged to Rs13,000 per maund and gram flour to Rs12,800 per maund. In retail markets, pulses are selling at Rs340 per kg, besan at Rs335 per kg, and split chickpeas at Rs565 per kg. This dramatic increase is primarily attributed to the announcement of the budget, which includes a significant hike in the general sales tax (GST) from 15 percent to 18 percent. This new tax rate is set to take effect on July 1, and the anticipation of this increase has led to widespread stockpiling of essential food items. Traders, anticipating higher costs, have started hoarding supplies, thereby creating an artificial scarcity that has driven prices to record levels.

The impact of these price hikes is not limited to dry goods. The Gawala Union has warned of a forthcoming increase in the prices of milk and dairy products after Eid, while the Meat Welfare Union has also threatened to raise the prices of meat. These anticipated increases are adding to the concerns of consumers, who are already feeling the strain of rising grocery costs. The soaring prices have created a sense of urgency among consumers, many of whom are rushing to purchase and stockpile essentials before prices rise further.

Pervaiz Butt, leader of the Central Grocery Association, has expressed deep concern over the situation. He has urged the deputy commissioner to convene a meeting of the District Price Control Committee after Eid to reassess and determine new prices for all essential items in light of the current market situation. According to Butt, the current price hikes are unsustainable and are putting an undue burden on ordinary citizens. He emphasized the need for immediate intervention to stabilize prices and prevent further exploitation of consumers.

The District Price Control Committee (DPCC) plays a crucial role in monitoring and regulating the prices of essential commodities. The DPCC is responsible for ensuring that prices remain within reasonable limits and that any increases are justified and necessary. However, the recent budget announcement and the resultant price hikes have highlighted significant challenges in the current system. The DPCC must now take swift action to address the rampant price increases and ensure measures to stabilize the market.

The recent price increases have not only affected individual consumers but also have broader economic implications. As the cost of living rises, the disposable income of ordinary citizens decreases, leading to reduced spending in other areas of the economy. This can have a ripple effect, slowing economic growth and potentially leading to higher unemployment rates. Moreover, the increased cost of essential goods can lead to higher inflation rates, further exacerbating the economic challenges faced by the country.

In addition to the increased GST, other factors are contributing to the current price hikes. These include global supply chain disruptions, currency devaluation, and rising fuel costs. These factors are making it more expensive to import goods and transport them within the country. As a result, traders are passing these increased costs onto consumers, leading to higher prices across the board.

The role of the government in this situation is critical. Effective policy measures are needed to address the root causes of the price increases and to provide relief to consumers. This may include subsidies for essential goods, stricter regulations on hoarding and profiteering, and measures to stabilize the currency and reduce fuel costs. Additionally, the government must work to improve the efficiency and transparency of the supply chain to ensure that goods are available at reasonable prices.

The announcement of the new budget has led to significant and unprecedented increases in the prices of essential food items. The role of the District Price Control Committee will be vital in addressing these price hikes and ensuring measures to stabilize the market. Immediate intervention is needed to prevent further exploitation of consumers and to provide relief to ordinary citizens who are already struggling to make ends meet. The government must take effective policy measures to address the root causes of the price increases and to ensure that essential goods remain affordable for all.

During Hajj, unregistered pilgrims endure the worst

RIYADH: After years of failing to secure a visa, Yasser finally concluded he had no choice but to perform Haj illegally, a move he now deeply regrets. While he survived the rites in extreme heat, he has not seen his wife since Sunday and fears she is among the more than 1,000 reported fatalities — the majority being unregistered Egyptians like himself.

“I have searched every single hospital in Makkah. She’s not there,” the 60-year-old retired engineer said on Friday by phone from his hotel room, where he is reluctant to pack his wife’s suitcase in hopes she will return to do it herself. “I don’t want to believe in this possibility that she’s dead. Because if she’s dead, it’s the end of her life and also the end of my life.”

Egypt accounts for more than half of this year’s Haj fatalities — 658 out of more than 1,000 reported as of Friday by around 10 countries stretching from Senegal to Indonesia. An Arab diplomat said 630 of those 658 dead Egyptians were unregistered, meaning they could not rely on access to amenities that make the Haj more bearable. That included air-conditioned tents meant to offer some relief as temperatures soared to as high as 51.8 degrees Celsius at the Grand Mosque in Makkah.

In the first Saudi comment on the deaths, a senior official said 577 people died on the Haj’s two main days on Saturday and Sunday, and that an overall toll was still being compiled. “The state did not fail, but there was a misjudgement on the part of people who did not appreciate the risks,” the official said.

Official Haj permits are allocated to countries through a quota system and distributed to individuals via a lottery. Even for those who can obtain them, the steep costs make the irregular route, which costs thousands of dollars less, more attractive. That is especially true since 2019 when Saudi Arabia began issuing general tourist visas, making it easier to travel to the country.

But for Yasser, who declined to be identified by his full name because he is still in Saudi Arabia, the complications from being unregistered became clear as soon as he reached the country last month. Well before Haj began a week ago, some shops and restaurants refused service to visitors who could not show permits on the official app, known as Nusuk. Once the long days of walking and praying beneath the blazing sun got underway, he could not access official Haj buses, the only transportation around the holy sites, without paying exorbitant, off-the-book fees.

When heat drove him to exhaustion, he sought urgent care at a hospital in Mina but was turned away, he said, again for lack of a permit. As their conditions worsened, Yasser and his wife Safaa lost each other in the crowds during the “stoning of the devil” in Mina. Since then, Yasser has repeatedly postponed their return flight home, hoping she will turn up. “I will keep postponing it until I find her,” he said.

Other unregistered Egyptian pilgrims described similar hardships — and similarly alarming sights as the heat’s toll mounted. “There were dead bodies on the ground” in Arafat, Mina, and on the way to Makkah, said Mohammed, 31, an Egyptian who lives in Saudi Arabia and who performed Haj this year with his 56-year-old mother. “I saw people suddenly collapse and die from exhaustion.”

Another Egyptian whose mother died on the route said it was impossible to get her mother an ambulance. An emergency vehicle only materialized after her mother was dead, taking the body to an unknown location. “Until now my cousins in Makkah are still searching for the body of my mom,” she said. “Don’t we have the right to get a last look at her before she is buried?”

The scale of the tragedy among unregistered pilgrims highlights the perilous conditions faced by those who perform Haj without official permits. As temperatures soar and infrastructure is strained, the lack of access to basic amenities and medical care becomes a life-threatening issue. This year’s fatalities underscore the need for better enforcement of regulations and support for legal pilgrims to ensure their safety during one of the most significant religious events in Islam.

Families like Yasser’s suffer a great deal of emotional damage; many are put in suspense, unsure of what will become of their loved ones. The already terrifying task of looking for the missing is made more difficult by the difficulties in tracking down and identifying unregistered pilgrims. The accounts of those impacted serve as a sobering reminder of the grave implications of doing the Hajj without the required permits, even as the authorities work to compile the overall toll and give relief.

The UN says that more than half of Afghans need humanitarian assistance.

The United Nations has issued a stark warning that over half of Afghanistan’s population is in dire need of humanitarian aid. This alarming situation is the result of a combination of factors including economic collapse, persistent conflict, drought, and the aftermath of decades of instability. The UN’s appeal highlights the urgent need for international support to avert a catastrophic humanitarian crisis in the war-torn country.

Afghanistan’s humanitarian crisis has deepened significantly since the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021. The abrupt cessation of foreign aid, which previously constituted a substantial portion of the Afghan government’s budget, has crippled the economy. The freezing of Afghan assets abroad and sanctions have further exacerbated the economic situation, leading to widespread poverty and unemployment. Millions of Afghans are struggling to survive as the prices of basic commodities skyrocket, and job opportunities become increasingly scarce.

The UN reports that 28 million Afghans, more than half of the country’s population, now require humanitarian assistance. This includes food, shelter, healthcare, and protection services. The organization has called for $4.4 billion in aid for 2024 to address these urgent needs, marking one of the largest humanitarian appeals ever for Afghanistan. Without immediate and sustained support, the situation is expected to deteriorate further, with potentially devastating consequences for millions of vulnerable individuals.

Food insecurity is one of the most pressing issues facing the Afghan population. According to the World Food Programme (WFP), nearly 20 million people are facing acute hunger. The combination of drought, conflict, and economic collapse has led to a severe reduction in agricultural production, leaving many families without enough food to eat. Malnutrition rates, especially among children, are alarmingly high, with reports indicating that over 3 million children under the age of five are at risk of severe malnutrition.

Healthcare services in Afghanistan are also on the brink of collapse. The health system, already fragile before the Taliban takeover, is now struggling to function with reduced funding and resources. Hospitals and clinics are facing critical shortages of medicines, equipment, and staff. The resurgence of diseases such as measles and polio, coupled with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, has placed additional strain on the health infrastructure. Many Afghans are unable to access essential healthcare, leading to preventable deaths and increased suffering.

The plight of women and girls in Afghanistan is particularly concerning. Under the Taliban’s rule, women’s rights have been severely restricted, with many women barred from working and girls denied access to education. This has not only limited their opportunities but also exacerbated the economic difficulties faced by families reliant on women’s income. The UN has stressed the importance of ensuring that humanitarian aid reaches women and girls, who are among the most vulnerable in Afghan society.

In addition to the immediate humanitarian needs, the UN has highlighted the importance of addressing the underlying causes of the crisis. This includes promoting economic stability, ensuring the protection of human rights, and fostering peace and security. The international community has a crucial role to play in supporting Afghanistan through diplomatic engagement, development assistance, and targeted sanctions relief to facilitate the delivery of aid.

Despite the challenges, there are glimmers of hope. Humanitarian organizations, including the UN, continue to operate in Afghanistan, providing life-saving assistance to those in need. These efforts are made possible through the dedication of aid workers who often operate in dangerous and difficult conditions. The UN has called for increased support and funding to ensure that these organizations can continue their vital work.

Afghanistan is facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, with more than half of its population in urgent need of assistance. The combination of economic collapse, conflict, and natural disasters has created a perfect storm of suffering. The international community must respond with urgency and compassion to provide the necessary support and prevent further deterioration of the situation. Ensuring that aid reaches the most vulnerable, including women and children, is crucial to alleviating the suffering and building a path towards recovery and stability for Afghanistan.

Israel-Gaza war in real time: Shati and Tuffah saw at least 42 deaths

The conflict in Gaza has intensified dramatically, with Israeli attacks on the Shati refugee camp and the Tuffah neighborhood resulting in the deaths of at least 42 Palestinians, as reported by the head of Gaza’s Government Media Office to Al Jazeera. This escalation is part of a broader and increasingly devastating conflict that has seen significant casualties and widespread destruction since its recent flare-up.

The health system in Gaza is on the brink of collapse, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The influx of casualties from the latest Israeli assault on the al-Mawasi “safe zone” has overwhelmed Al-Aqsa Hospital, pushing the medical infrastructure to its limits. Hospitals in Gaza, already strained by years of blockade and inadequate resources, are struggling to cope with the massive number of injured individuals. Essential medical supplies are running low, and the lack of electricity and clean water further exacerbates the dire situation. The international community has expressed grave concern over the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza, with calls for immediate ceasefire and humanitarian aid intensifying.

The conflict has seen Israeli tanks advancing deeper into western Rafah, while warplanes and artillery bombard the city. This assault follows an incident where an Israeli armored vehicle was destroyed by an improvised explosive device planted by Hamas. The intensification of ground and air operations in Rafah underscores the brutal nature of the conflict, which has resulted in significant civilian casualties and widespread destruction of infrastructure.

Since the beginning of the current hostilities on October 7, the human toll has been staggering. In Gaza, at least 37,551 people have been killed, and 85,911 have been wounded. These figures highlight the severe impact on the civilian population, including women and children, who are often the most vulnerable in such conflicts. The relentless bombardment has led to massive displacement, with thousands of families forced to flee their homes in search of safety. The destruction of homes, schools, and hospitals has further compounded the suffering of the civilian population, creating a humanitarian catastrophe.

In Israel, the revised death toll from the Hamas-led attacks stands at 1,139, with dozens of people still held captive in Gaza. The attacks by Hamas have been widely condemned for their indiscriminate nature, targeting civilian areas and resulting in significant loss of life and injury. The abduction of Israeli civilians and soldiers has added a complex dimension to the conflict, raising concerns about the fate of the captives and the potential for further escalation.

The international response to the conflict has been varied, with some countries and organizations calling for immediate ceasefire and others expressing support for Israel’s right to self-defense. The United Nations and various human rights organizations have condemned the high civilian death toll and the destruction of civilian infrastructure, urging all parties to adhere to international humanitarian law. Efforts to broker a ceasefire have so far been unsuccessful, with both sides holding firm to their positions.

The situation in Gaza remains dire, with the civilian population bearing the brunt of the conflict. The destruction of infrastructure, the collapse of the health system, and the massive displacement of people have created a humanitarian crisis of unprecedented proportions. The international community’s role in providing humanitarian aid and facilitating dialogue between the conflicting parties is crucial in addressing the immediate needs of the population and working towards a long-term resolution.

T[he ongoing conflict in Gaza has resulted in a catastrophic loss of life and severe humanitarian consequences. The deaths of at least 42 Palestinians in the recent attacks, the near-collapse of the health system, and the massive displacement of civilians highlight the urgent need for a ceasefire and international intervention. As the conflict continues to escalate, the international community must intensify efforts to provide humanitarian assistance and facilitate a peaceful resolution to prevent further loss of life and suffering.

Gold Prices Decline in Pakistan Amid Global Economic Shifts and Domestic Stability

The price of gold per tola was Rs241,500, as reported by the All Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association (APGJSA), following a loss of Rs1,400 in a single day. The 10-gram gold saw a reduction of Rs1,201 before being sold for Rs207,047.

In international market, the rate was set at $2,320 per ounce after it plunged $43 during the day. Meanwhile, silver rates inched up by Rs100 and stood at Rs2,850 per tola. On Friday, gold price per tola jumped by Rs1,600 clocking in at Rs242,900 in Pakistan.

Gold prices in Pakistan have experienced a notable decline, reflecting broader global market trends and domestic economic factors. The drop in gold prices has garnered significant attention from investors, jewelers, and consumers alike, who are closely monitoring the shifts for potential opportunities and implications.

Another factor contributing to the decline in gold prices is the shifting sentiment in global financial markets. As the global economy recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic, investors are increasingly moving towards riskier assets like equities and real estate, reducing their reliance on gold as a safe-haven asset. This shift has led to reduced demand for gold, further driving down its price. Additionally, the anticipated tightening of monetary policies by central banks, including the Federal Reserve, has heightened expectations of higher interest rates, which typically weigh on non-yielding assets like gold.

Domestically, Pakistan’s economic situation plays a crucial role in influencing gold prices. The Pakistani rupee has shown signs of stabilization against the US dollar, supported by various measures from the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and improvements in foreign exchange reserves. A stronger rupee makes gold imports cheaper, contributing to the decline in domestic gold prices. Furthermore, the recent economic reforms and initiatives aimed at boosting economic stability and growth have improved investor confidence, reducing the appeal of gold as a hedge against economic uncertainty.

The decline in gold prices has had mixed impacts on different segments of the Pakistani market. For consumers, particularly those planning weddings or other significant life events, lower gold prices are a welcome relief. Jewelry, an integral part of Pakistani culture and traditions, becomes more affordable, allowing consumers to purchase more for their money. This increase in purchasing power is expected to boost sales for local jewelers, who have faced challenges due to high gold prices in the past.

On the other hand, investors who traditionally view gold as a secure investment may be re-evaluating their portfolios. The drop in gold prices could prompt a shift towards other investment avenues, such as stocks, bonds, or real estate, which may offer better returns in the current economic climate. However, seasoned investors often view price declines as opportunities to buy gold at lower rates, anticipating future price increases. This speculative behavior can sometimes counterbalance the effects of declining prices, stabilizing the market.

The jewelry industry, a significant sector in Pakistan’s economy, could experience a resurgence due to lower gold prices. Reduced costs for raw materials enable jewelers to expand their offerings and potentially increase profit margins. This could lead to growth in the industry, job creation, and greater contributions to the economy. However, the extent of this positive impact will depend on the overall economic environment and consumer spending capacity.

Despite the current decline, gold remains a crucial part of Pakistani culture and economy. Its value as a traditional form of wealth and a hedge against inflation ensures that it will continue to play a significant role in the financial landscape. Looking ahead, the trajectory of gold prices will depend on a myriad of factors, including global economic trends, currency fluctuations, and domestic economic policies. Investors, consumers, and industry stakeholders will need to stay vigilant and adapt to the evolving market conditions.

The decline in gold prices in Pakistan is a multifaceted development influenced by global economic dynamics and domestic factors. While it presents challenges for some investors, it offers opportunities for consumers and the jewelry industry. As the market adjusts to these changes, the long-term outlook for gold will continue to be shaped by both global and local economic trends.

Pakistan will become a manufacturer of electric automobiles.

Pakistan is set to embark on a significant venture in its automotive industry with the commencement of electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing. This initiative marks a pivotal step towards modernizing the country’s transportation sector and addressing pressing environmental concerns. The move to produce electric vehicles domestically is seen as a strategic response to the global shift towards greener technologies and the urgent need to reduce carbon emissions.

The government of Pakistan has been laying the groundwork for this development over the past few years. Recognizing the potential of EVs to revolutionize the automotive industry and contribute to environmental sustainability, the government introduced the National Electric Vehicle Policy (NEVP). This policy aims to promote the adoption of EVs by offering incentives such as tax reductions, import duty exemptions on EV parts, and subsidies for manufacturers. These measures are designed to attract both local and foreign investors to set up manufacturing plants in Pakistan.

Several key players in the automotive industry have already expressed interest in establishing EV manufacturing facilities in Pakistan. Among them is MG Motors, which has announced plans to start producing electric vehicles in the country. The company aims to cater to the growing demand for EVs not only in Pakistan but also in the broader South Asian market. Additionally, local manufacturers are exploring partnerships and joint ventures with international firms to bring advanced EV technology to Pakistan.

The shift to electric vehicle manufacturing is expected to bring multiple benefits to Pakistan’s economy. Firstly, it will create job opportunities in various sectors, including manufacturing, engineering, and technology. The development of an EV industry will necessitate skilled labor, which could lead to the establishment of training programs and educational initiatives focused on emerging technologies. This, in turn, can enhance the overall skill set of the workforce and reduce unemployment rates.

Moreover, the local production of electric vehicles will reduce the country’s dependence on imported fossil fuels, thus improving its trade balance and energy security. Pakistan’s import bill is heavily impacted by the cost of petroleum products, and a shift towards EVs could significantly reduce these expenses. This move aligns with the government’s broader strategy to diversify the energy mix and promote the use of renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, which can be integrated into the EV charging infrastructure.

Environmental benefits are at the core of the push for electric vehicles in Pakistan. The country faces severe air pollution problems, particularly in urban areas, where vehicle emissions are a major contributor. By transitioning to electric vehicles, Pakistan can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality. This will have positive implications for public health, reducing the incidence of respiratory diseases and other pollution-related health issues.

The introduction of EVs also aligns with global trends and commitments to combat climate change. Pakistan, as a signatory to the Paris Agreement, has committed to reducing its carbon footprint and adopting sustainable practices. The local manufacturing of electric vehicles is a tangible step towards fulfilling these commitments and contributing to global efforts to mitigate climate change.

Despite the promising prospects, there are challenges that need to be addressed to ensure the successful implementation of electric vehicle manufacturing in Pakistan. These include developing the necessary infrastructure, such as charging stations, and ensuring the availability of affordable and reliable electricity. Additionally, public awareness and acceptance of EVs will play a crucial role in the widespread adoption of this technology. The government and industry stakeholders will need to work together to educate consumers about the benefits of electric vehicles and dispel any misconceptions.

The move to manufacture electric vehicles in Pakistan represents a forward-thinking approach to addressing environmental issues, boosting the economy, and aligning with global technological advancements. With the right policies, investments, and public support, Pakistan has the potential to become a significant player in the electric vehicle market, paving the way for a greener and more sustainable future.

Escalation in Gaza: Israeli Forces Intensify Strikes Amid Rising Casualties and Humanitarian Crisis

Israeli forces have intensified their military operations across the Gaza Strip, escalating a conflict that has already claimed numerous lives and caused widespread devastation. The escalation marks one of the most severe upticks in violence in recent years, contributing to a cycle of retaliatory actions that show no sign of abating. The increased strikes come amid a backdrop of complex geopolitical tensions, longstanding grievances, and an ever-worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The recent wave of strikes by Israeli forces has targeted a wide range of sites within Gaza, including alleged militant hideouts, infrastructure, and residential areas. The Israeli military asserts that these operations are aimed at dismantling the capabilities of militant groups, particularly Hamas, which governs Gaza and has been responsible for launching rocket attacks into Israeli territory. These rocket attacks have terrorized civilians, prompting the Israeli government to respond with overwhelming force. However, critics argue that the strikes often result in significant civilian casualties and extensive damage to civilian infrastructure, exacerbating the plight of Gaza’s residents.

Gaza, a densely populated enclave with over two million residents, has long been a focal point of Israeli-Palestinian tensions. The blockade imposed by Israel and Egypt since 2007 has crippled the local economy, limiting access to essential goods and services, and creating conditions described by human rights organizations as a humanitarian catastrophe. The intensified military operations have compounded these issues, leading to a further deterioration in living conditions. Electricity and water supplies, already intermittent, have been severely disrupted. Hospitals, strained by the COVID-19 pandemic, are struggling to cope with the influx of casualties from the ongoing violence.

The human toll of the conflict is staggering. Casualties on both sides continue to rise, with civilians, including women and children, bearing the brunt of the violence. The psychological impact of the conflict is profound, leaving deep scars on those who live under the constant threat of airstrikes and rocket attacks. Families are being torn apart, homes are being destroyed, and entire communities are living in fear and uncertainty.

International reaction to the escalating violence has been mixed. Some countries and international organizations have called for an immediate ceasefire and have condemned the loss of civilian life. The United Nations has repeatedly urged both sides to exercise restraint and engage in dialogue to resolve the underlying issues. However, efforts to broker peace have so far proven futile, with both Israeli and Palestinian leaders holding firm to their positions. The United States, a key ally of Israel, has expressed support for Israel’s right to self-defense while also calling for measures to protect civilians.

The conflict in Gaza is not only a regional issue but also a significant point of contention in global politics. The disproportionate impact on civilians has sparked protests and demonstrations worldwide, with people calling for an end to the violence and greater accountability for actions taken during the conflict. The situation has also strained diplomatic relations, with some countries reconsidering their foreign policy stances and aid commitments in response to the unfolding humanitarian crisis.

As the conflict continues to rage, the prospects for a lasting peace appear dim. The underlying issues, including territorial disputes, the status of Jerusalem, and the right of return for Palestinian refugees, remain unresolved and deeply contentious. Without meaningful dialogue and a genuine commitment to addressing these core issues, the cycle of violence is likely to persist, bringing further suffering to the people of Gaza and Israel.

In conclusion, the stepped-up strikes by Israeli forces across Gaza highlight the devastating consequences of prolonged conflict and the urgent need for a resolution. The human cost, the destruction of infrastructure, and the deepening humanitarian crisis underscore the imperative for both sides to seek a peaceful and sustainable solution. The international community’s role in facilitating dialogue and providing humanitarian assistance is crucial in this endeavor. Until such efforts bear fruit, the people of Gaza and Israel will continue to endure the tragic repercussions of this enduring conflict.
