Election disputes in Sindh “do not augur well” for general elections

image 9

The problems that marred the second round of Sindh’s local body elections, according to the Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN), do not auger well for the general elections, which are anticipated later this year.

Local elections on January 15 were hampered by delayed results, which led political groups including Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and others to accuse the elections of being rigged.

In its assessment on the polls, the FAFEN stated that “controversies over the quality of electoral processes do not augur well, particularly when the political parties are preparing for general elections that are constitutionally due by October 11, 2023.”

According to the electoral watchdog, many of these difficulties are caused by flaws in the legal system that oversees elections, which must be fixed through extensive conversations with all political actors, regardless of their political differences, coming together for electoral reforms.

According to the report, the process of democratisation would continue to deteriorate along with popular confidence in democracy and its capacity to raise peoples’ social and economic well-being unless elections result in political stability.

KHYBER: A terrorist attack on a police checkpoint in Khyber Agency, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, resulted in the martyrdom of at least three police officers on Thursday.

The police station was set on fire after the checkpoint in Tekhta Beg was attacked by terrorists who utilised explosive material, according to the local police.

Firefights between the police and terrorists are still going on.

The Pak-Afghanistan highway was shut down immediately after the attack, and a sizable police detachment was sent to the checkpoint.

The attack on the police checkpoint was described as a suicide attack by Jamrud SHO Shah Khalid while speaking to reporters. The checkpoint was entered by the suicide bomber, who then detonated himself.

He said, “When the police saw the suicide bomber, they opened fire on the target.”

Manzoor Shah and Younis Khan, two policemen, were killed in the attack, and Rafiq, a chef at the checkpoint, died from his injuries after being taken to a hospital in Peshawar.

Pakistan earlier in the day requested the Iranian authorities to look into the cross-border terror incident in the Panjgur district of Balochistan and bring the perpetrators to justice as the nation continues to deal with cross-border terrorism.

On January 14, amid a gunfight with terrorists who had launched a nighttime attack at a police station in Peshawar, three police officers, among them, were also embraced martyrs.

Rakhi Sawant, a Bollywood actor and model, has been held in connection with a FIR that actor Sherlyn Chopra has filed against her. The Mumbai police have detained her.

According to reports, Rakhi was scheduled to introduce her dancing academy, which she co-owns with her husband Adil Durrani, on January 19. She was nevertheless taken into custody by Amboli police on the same day.

Sherlyn Chopra tweeted about Rakhi’s arrest to let everyone know. “Amboli Police has arrested Rakhi Sawant in relation to FIR 883/2022,” she tweeted. Yesterday, the Mumbai session court rejected Rakhi Sawant’s ABA 1870/2022.

Rakhi had criticised Sherlyn Chopra for her remarks towards #MeToo accuser Sajid Khan last year. Sherlyn made the claim that Salman Khan was defending the director in a media interview after recording her testimony against Sajid Khan on October 29. Rakhi, however, criticised Sherlyn for her remarks while standing up for Sajid. Rakhi claimed in a statement to the media that the police were aware of which complaints were valid and which were not. Later, Sherlyn accused Rakhi of defamation and filed a case.

Rakhi, who just converted to Islam, reportedly left with her husband Adil Khan Durrani to conduct Umrah.

For revealing personal information, Aiman and Minal threaten to sue Feroze

LAHORE: The actor Feroze Khan had received attention for his role in a domestic abuse case. In a lawsuit he filed, he revealed the personal contact information of several Pakistani celebrities, which has now sparked new debate. Aliza Sultan Khan, his ex-spouse, is also named in the case, along with Aiman Khan, Asim Azhar, Farhan Saeed, Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, Osman Khalid Butt, Musaddiq Malik, Minal Khan, Mira Sethi, Sarwat Gillani, and Yasir Hussain.

This action has offended the involved celebrities, and a number of them have expressed displeasure about the invasion of their privacy.

Minal threatened Khan with severe legal consequences. Due to the fact that such behaviour is illegal, Feroze Khan will be held accountable for publishing both my personal information and the information of numerous other well-known individuals on social media.

The “Khaani” actor had one ex-wife and her attorney two days previously, but Sarwat Gilani had said on Wednesday that eleven other celebrities and their attorneys would now be pursuing the “Khaani” star. On social media, Feroze received criticism from her husband Fahad Mirza for being a “moron of the biggest sort.” Actor Yasir Hussain also criticised Khan for getting him into trouble. Singer-turned-actor Farhan Saeed begged Khan to apologise in public or suffer the consequences of his actions.

Feroze initially posted the legal document on social media, but he later removed it and changed it to a tweet about his legal team serving defamation notices on anyone who made erroneous and unsupported accusations. Unfortunately, the notice had already been extensively disseminated and was being viewed by many of his followers by the time he took it down from his official Twitter account.

Babar Azam

The allegations that Pakistani captain Babar Azam was “sexting” another player’s girlfriend are all over the Indian media. The issue is that the misleading information came from a parody account’s “joke” tweet.

The media failed to notice — or deliberately decided to ignore — the fact that the Twitter account was not intended to be taken seriously, demonstrating how false information can turn into accepted truth and explode online.

The spoof account’s unknown creator apologised to Azam, who has been silent throughout, on Twitter and criticised India’s “clown media” in the process.

The original tweet from the “Dr Nimo Yadav” account on January 15 — which has since been removed — said that Azam had been “sexting with gf [girlfriend] of another Pakistan cricketer.”

Additionally, the account tweeted to its more than 27,000 followers that the player was “promise her that her bf (boyfriend) won’t be out of team if she keeps sexting with him.”

The tweet included a topless man in bed who allegedly resembled Azam and a screenshot of Azam with a heart placed on it. The owner of the Twitter account said that he took the photo and video from an Instagram account that has since been deleted.

The post was spread widely across media in India and internationally despite the fact that the Twitter handle is flagged as a “Parody account.”

The fraudulent claim was still there on at least eight Indian news websites on Wednesday, even after the owner of the Twitter account reiterated that the message was incorrect when he deleted it the following day.

One international sports website removed its piece after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) expressed its anger at its “media partner” for reporting on the “unsubstantiated personal charges,” even though it had quoted the “verified Twitter account Dr Nimo Yadav.”

Shahbaz Gill, the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), was granted protective bail by the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Thursday till January 24 and the public prosecutor was asked for information regarding the cases that had been filed against him.

The PTI leader begged the court to give him information regarding the cases brought against him in his petition.

Judge Tariq Saleem Sheikh of the LHC heard the matter. When questioned, the federal government’s attorney informed the court that the PTI leader had no cases filed against him with the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

However, one case was filed against Gill, but the prosecutor said it would take time to provide further information about it.

In the meanwhile, the court granted protected bail to the PTI leader in exchange for surety bonds of Rs. 5,000 and ordered the deputy attorney general to produce information on the charges brought against Gill by Monday.

IHC

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) earlier today rejected Gill’s request for a stay of proceedings in the sedition case brought against him, despite the fact that he already faces sedition accusations.

The PTI politician was detained on August 9 from Banigala Chowk on suspicion of stirring up public mutiny against the Pakistan Army’s ranks and files during a TV broadcast.

He was imprisoned for more than a month after being charged with sedition and attempting to reclaim weapons. But on September 15, following numerous attempts to be released, he was granted bail by the IHC in the sedition case.

Under Sections 124-A (sedition), 505 (statements conducing to public mischief), and the Pakistan Penal Code, the case against Gill has been filed at the Kohsar Police Station.

While the party leader was being held in detention, the PTI kept on asking for his release on bail, claiming that he was being subjected to humiliation, torture, and sexual abuse by the police.

The disclosure of sensitive information pertaining to well-known Pakistani celebrities has Feroze Khan in the news once more.

In his case, he accused his ex-wife Aliza Sultan Khan, Aiman Khan, Asim Azhar, Farhan Saeed, Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, Osman Khalid Butt, Musaddiq Malik, Minal Khan, Mira Sethi, Sarwat Gillani, and Yasir Hussain of defamation and disclosed their phone numbers and addresses.

As would be predicted, the reactions of the identified celebrities were ones of outrage. The invasion of Aiman and Minal’s privacy was described. Aiman wrote a thorough account of how her privacy was violated and how mentally taxing it was.

Regarding Sarfaraz Ahmed, what did Ramiz Raja say?

Ramiz Raja, a former Test cricketer and the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), cleared up the controversy surrounding his biassed opinions about Sarfaraz Ahmed, however he held back from commenting on his performance against New Zealand in his comeback series.

There was a notion that older cricketers like Sarfaraz were ignored when Raja was in charge of the PCB.

While Mohammad Rizwan continued to be the primary choice for the national squad, young wicketkeeper Mohammad Haris was favoured over Sarfaraz’s wealth of experience.

Sarfaraz was given a chance to play Test cricket after Raja left, and he took it by storm, striking three consecutive fifties before securing a match-winning hundred against New Zealand in Karachi.

When Raja was asked about Sarfaraz’s comeback performance in an interview, he declined to respond and said, “I don’t want to do politics.”

Added he, “This query is unnecessary. It’s good for Pakistan cricket if he did well. Let’s continue.”

At a heated UN meeting about the visit to Al-Aqsa, Israeli and Palestinian envoys argue

At a Security Council meeting on Thursday, the envoys of Israel and Palestine hurled sharp jabs over a contentious visit by an Israeli minister to the Al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem.

At a heated UN meeting about the visit to Al-Aqsa, Israeli and Palestinian envoys argue

Gilad Erdan, Israel’s ambassador to the UN, referred to the meeting as “pathetic” and “absurd,” while the Palestinian representative charged that Israel was acting “with total disrespect.”

Following a request by the United Arab Emirates and China, the 15-member Council met at UN headquarters in New York to consider the visit, which has infuriated Palestinians.

“To hold a Security Council session on a non-event is truly absurd,” he said.

Tuesday’s visit by Israel’s new national security minister, firebrand Itamar Ben-Gvir, sparked a wave of international condemnation, including from the United States, a longstanding ally of Israel.

Al-Aqsa mosque lies in Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem and is the third-holiest site in Islam. It is the most sacred place to Jews, who refer to it as Temple Mount.

Under a longstanding status quo, non-Muslims can visit the site at specific times but are not allowed to pray there — although some Israeli nationalists are believed to do so covertly, which angers the Palestinians.

Erdan said Ben-Gvir’s visit was “in line with the status quo and whoever claims otherwise is only inflaming the situation.”
