Traders said that the $6 billion bailout offered by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) was still out of Pakistan’s financial reach as the nation battled a resurgence of terrorism and a nearly bankrupt economy.

The benchmark KSE-100 Shares Index of the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) dropped 724.81 points or 1.71% to 41,741.78 points. The number of shares traded decreased by 86 million, from 367.356 million to 281.894 million, while the trading value grew, from Rs13.590 billion to Rs14.709 billion.

As the death toll rises, hopes of discovering additional earthquake survivors in Syria and Turkey dwindle

image 8 10

The death toll from this week’s earthquakes in Turkey and Syria approached 16,000 on Thursday as irritation grew over the delayed assistance delivery and optimism that many survivors would be discovered 72 hours after the tragedy.

The incident, according to a Turkish official, poses “extremely serious issues” for the May 14 election, in which President Tayyip Erdogan is anticipated to face the toughest opposition in his 20 years in office.

In Turkey and Syria, a large number of people spent a third night sleeping outside or in automobiles in the frigid winter weather since their homes had been demolished or were so shook by the earthquakes that they were too terrified to go back inside.

It is expected that the earthquake, which occurred in the middle of the night and was followed by strong aftershocks, will be Turkey’s deadliest since 1999, when a tremor of a similar magnitude claimed more than 17,000 lives.

Video of a few more survivors being rescued in Turkey surfaced late on Wednesday. One of them was Abdulalim Muaini, who was taken from his collapsed home in Hatay, Turkey, where he had been staying since Monday next to his dead wife.

image 8 8

Wahab Riaz, a prominent pacer for Pakistan, commented on Babar Azam’s captaincy on Thursday, adding that the latter “would learn from his experiences.”

Pakistan’s gold price decreases by more than Rs4,000 per tola

image 6 4

Tuesday saw a sharp drop in gold prices in Pakistan due to the nation’s ongoing economic unrest and persistent currency fluctuations.

The price of gold (24 carats) declined by Rs 4,300 per tola and Rs 3,686 per 10 kilos, according to the All-Pakistan Sarafa Gems and Jewellers Association (APSGJA), to settle at Rs 200,000 per tola and Rs 171,468 per 10 grammes, respectively.

The price of the valuable metal has fallen three times in a row, by Rs200 per tola on Monday and Rs4,000 per tola on Friday. Last week, the yellow metal market was primarily optimistic.

The State Bank of Pakistan’s reserves, which are at a historic low of $3,086.2 million and are only enough to fund imports for less than one month, might cause the price of gold to increase as Pakistan continues to buy the precious metal.

However, investors were only buying gold bars, not jewellery, which had lowered goldsmiths’ profit margins and put the labour force at risk of losing jobs as jewellery manufacturers turned to other careers in the lack of work.

A weaker dollar, which had recently suffered severe losses, helped gold rise for a second straight session on the international market as traders awaited additional economic data to determine its expected impact on US interest rates.

Asim Azhar and Shae Gill will perform this year’s anthem, as the PSL announced on its official Twitter account. According to the sources, Faris Shafi will be the third performer and will give the song a rap flavour.

Before, the PSL 8 song was performed by Ali Sethi, son of the chairman of the PCB Management Committee, Najam Sethi. The creators of Pasoori were slated to compose the anthem for this year. However, in order to avoid a conflict of interest, Najam, a two-time former PCB chairman, opted to invalidate the contract involving his son.

“That Ali won’t be able to perform the national anthem makes me sad. This has hurt Ali as well “Last month, Najam revealed during a press conference.

“When I’m not here, Ali Sethi will perform the national anthem. You must get where I’m coming from. I don’t want to get engaged in any conflict of interest disputes, “He had spoken.

Explainer: What made the earthquake in Turkey and Syria so severe?

469440 7632023 updates

Seismologists said the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that slammed Turkey and Syria on Monday, with a breach of more than 100 km (62 miles) between the Anatolian and Arabian plates, is likely to be one of the worst this decade.

According to scientists, the following occurred beneath the earth’s surface, along with what to anticipate in the aftermath:

From where did the earthquake come?
At a depth of roughly 18 km on the East Anatolian Fault, the epicentre was located about 26 kilometres to the east of the Turkish city of Nurdagi. The earthquake’s northeastern radiation devastated central Turkey and Syria.

The East Anatolian Fault produced little significant seismic activity in the 20th century. According to Roger Musson, an honorary research fellow at the British Geological Survey, “it would seem more or less blank if we were going only by (large) earthquakes that were recorded by seismometers.”

According to the US Geological Survey, there have only been three earthquakes in the region that have registered above 6.0 on the Richter Scale since 1970. But a 7.0 earthquake that struck the area in 1822 is thought to have killed 20,000 people.

Imran Khan is called a “narcissist” by Sherry Rehman for missing the APC

image 3

Female MPs have criticised Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan for his narcissism after the PTI leader declined Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s invitation to attend the next All Parties Conference (APC).

Senator Sherry Rehman, a climate change minister, claimed that the PTI leader’s failure to attend the APC demonstrates that his goals do not coincide with Pakistan’s security and interests.

In a statement released in this respect, she stated, “At a time when Pakistan is experiencing a huge crisis, it is distressing to observe that Khan continues to act out a narrative that has lost its relevance and legitimacy.”

After the premier acknowledged issuing an invitation to Khan during the apex committee meeting held at the Governor’s House in Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, PTI Secretary-General Asad Umar announced the party leader wouldn’t attend the federal government’s APC scheduled for February 7.

The minister went on to say that by contacting the APC, the coalition government was attempting to get all of the political leaders of the nation to talk about how they could work together to address the issues facing the nation.

However, Rehman noted that Khan’s polarising politics only weaken the sense of togetherness that the country needs to combat threats, including terrorism, about which he continues to telegraph uncertainty.

Pakistan’s oil sector is “on the verge of catastrophe” as the liquidity crisis gets worse

KARACHI/ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s oil firms have issued a warning that the sector is “on the brink of collapse” as long as the dollar liquidity crisis continues and their costs of doing business skyrocket as a result of the devaluation of the rupee.

The government lifted the dollar limit in response to the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) request, which caused the rupee to plunge to a record low of Rs276.58 in the interbank market.

The Oil Companies Advisory Council (OCAC) claimed in a letter to the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) and Energy Ministry that the “sudden depreciation” of the local rupee has resulted in losses to the industry amounting to billions of rupees because their letters of credit (LCs) are anticipated to be settled at the new rates, “whereas the related product has already been sold.”

Pakistani gold prices soar as the currency continues to decline

image 2 4

As the international precious metal markets rose Thursday in response to a hawkish US Federal Reserve, investors were also drawn to gold as their available saving options remained constrained. Pakistan’s gold price likewise maintained its impressive run.

The price of gold (24 carats) climbed by Rs 2,200 per tola and Rs 1,887 per 10 kilos to settle at Rs 207,200 and Rs 177,641, respectively, according to data issued by the All-Pakistan Sarafa Gems and Jewellers Association (APSGJA).

The precious metal has been rising for two straight days despite declining foreign exchange reserves and a weak currency, which will increase the price as Pakistan imports gold to meet its demand.

However, investors were only buying gold bars, not jewellery, which had lowered goldsmiths’ profit margins and put the labour force at risk of losing jobs as jewellery manufacturers turned to other careers in the lack of work.

Despite significant obstacles, Shehbaz invites Imran to the all-parties summit

image 2

ISLAMABAD: Imran Khan, the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), was invited by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday to an all-parties conference (APC) intended to find solutions to Pakistan’s ominous economic and political challenges.

According to a statement from Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, the prime minister wants to sit down the leaders of all political parties so they can consult one another and come up with solutions to the current predicament. On February 7, the conference is scheduled to take place in Islamabad.

She claimed that top PTI figures including former National Assembly speaker Asad Qaiser and ex-defence minister Pervez Khattak have been contacted by Federal Minister Ayaz Sadiq to participate in the upcoming moot.

The invitation is a significant development because the PDM-led administration and the PTI have historically disagreed on practically all matters of national concern, not just since Khan was removed from the PM Office but also when the roles were reversed.
