Despite the recession, $1.2 billion worth of automobiles were imported in just six months

image 7 4

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan spent $1.2 billion (or Rs 259 billion) on the import of transportation products, including luxury cars, high-end electric vehicles, and their parts, over the past six months, according to report, despite efforts to conserve foreign exchange reserves by curbing imports.

With less than $5 billion in reserves, Pakistan is severely short on dollars and can hardly afford to pay for three weeks’ worth of imports.

Despite a general decline in imports of goods and vehicles for transportation compared to last year, the economy was nevertheless heavily burdened by significant outflows for the purchase of pricey luxury automobiles and pointless stuff.

Completely built units (CBU), completely knocked down/semi knocked down (CKD/SKD), totaling $530.5 million, or 118.2 billion, were imported during this period.

Since CKD kits are prohibited from being imported, yet millions of dollars’ worth of these kits are, the local industry and their production are harmed.

The government’s stance of banning imports relating to the industrial and commercial sectors is drawing much criticism, but large expenditure on imported cars and other vehicles is making matters worse.

MQM-P demands new Sindh LG elections

image 3 1

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) demanded of the government on Friday that new, free, fair, and transparent elections be held in place of the local government (LG) elections that were held on January 15.

Wasim Akhtar, the deputy convener of the MQM-P, informed the journalists at a news conference in Karachi that despite it having been four days after the polls, the results had still not been made public.

When there is no inclement weather nor a higher attendance, why are the results being delayed? Akhtar enquired. He claimed that everyone believed these elections were rigged, including the Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN).

A FAFEN analysis on Sindh LG polls claims that issues with electoral integrity are bad news for the nation, especially as political parties gear up for general elections that are legally required to take place by October 11, 2023.

The report also stated that these disputes must be resolved through extensive talks because they are caused by flaws in the legal system that oversees elections.

The head of MQM-P proclaimed that Karachi “must be taken care of,” as it “provides for the country and is a major source of Sindh’s annual budget.”

People shouldn’t believe rumours, guesses, or false information because there is no more fuel accessible for storage in the nation.

The PSO also emphasised that it had plenty of supplies on hand as of the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority’s (OGRA) designated day in a separate statement on Twitter, saying: “As the national flag bearer, the PSO remains committed to fueling the nation and is ensuring an uninterrupted supply of fuel at its retail outlets nationwide.”

A blast in Bolan causes at least 18 injuries and delays a train

image 1 1

At least 18 people were hurt in yet another terror attack in the unrest-plagued Balochistan province when a remote-control bomb exploded on a railway track in Bolan, throwing the train’s engine and seven carriages off course.

According to statements made to the media by railroad officials, the injured were taken to Combined Military Hospital (CMH), Sibi.

According to local authorities, the Jaffer Express train was en route from Machh to Sibi when the explosion took place.

“To save railway passengers and transport them safely to Sibi, a relief train was sent out from Sibi. Buses are now transporting passengers from Sibi to Quetta who were on the Jaffer Express travelling from Peshawar to Machh “Added they.

A remote-control device, according to Deputy Commissioner Kachh Agha Samiullah, was used to set off the explosion.

On the other hand, the train’s derailed cars are being removed off the rails.

Gasline explosion

A 12-inch gas pipeline explosion in Bolan’s Sirajabad neighbourhood on January 17 disrupted the gas supply to various districts of Balochistan, making it impossible to finish the repairs.

The Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) stated that the delay in the repair work was caused by rain and that it would be finished in a week.

The SSGC further stated that gas is currently being delivered to Quetta and other places via a different pipe.

The SSGC posted on its official Twitter account after the pipeline ruptured, saying: “The law enforcement and intelligence agencies are working to ascertain the cause of the damage.”

The pipeline, according to the SSGC, had also been protected. The neighborhood’s local government has begun nighttime cleanup efforts as part of its reaction.

Involuntary manslaughter charges against Alec Baldwin are pending in connection with a fatal gunshot on a set

kj

According to rumours, actor Alec Baldwin may face charges of involuntary manslaughter for the murder of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the Rust set.

The case will also be brought against Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who was in charge of the set’s weaponry, while assistant director David Halls has entered a plea deal for the allegation of careless use of a deadly weapon.

Hutchins perished after a pretend gun held by Baldwin went off during the movie’s pre-production in October 2021. In the event at the Bonanza Creek Ranch set in Santa Fe, New Mexico, director Joel Souza also sustained injuries.

The judgement “distorts Halyna Hutchins’ tragic death and constitutes a horrific miscarriage of justice,” Baldwin’s attorney stated upon the revelation of the criminal charges, adding, “We will fight these allegations, and we will win.”

The charges have been welcomed by Hutchins’ family, who expressed their hope that the legal system will “hold accountable those who break the law.”

The announcement was made by Santa Fe’s district attorney, Mary Carmack-Altwies, who said in a statement that “no one is above the law” and that “justice belongs to all.”

Quetta won’t host any PSL 2023 games

image

Quetta won’t be the fifth location for the Pakistan Super League (PSL), which will start next month. An official from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) told The News that the harsh weather in the city was the primary reason that all efforts to organise some PSL matches at the Bugti Stadium in Quetta were “futile owing to numerous factors.”

“We are grateful to everyone who supported the PCB’s efforts to host PSL games in Quetta. We despatched a special team to Quetta in response to Najam Sethi, the head of the PCB Management Committee, making an announcement, in order to make special arrangements to organise certain PSL matches there, the official said.

“The team spoke with all the Quetta stakeholders, but came to the conclusion that organising games there this fall would be impossible, “added the official.

“We appreciate everyone’s support, especially that of the Corps Commander and the province government. However, we have determined that it won’t be possible to conduct PSL matches there this time.”

“The delay in beginning the preparations for the extravaganza, as well as the harsh weather in Quetta, are the key causes, “added said.

Iran criticises the EU for calling the Revolutionary Guards terrorists

image 10

The European Parliament‘s call to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation, which would open the door to sanctions against the potent military force, was denounced by Iran on Thursday.

In a phone conversation with Josep Borrell, the head of foreign policy for the European Union (EU), Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian “seriously attacked the emotional approach of the European Parliament and labelled the move improper and incorrect.”

Amir-Abdollahian cautioned the EU to “consider about the potential effects of this emotional behaviour” and criticised the resolution from Wednesday as “harsh and unprofessional.”

The European Parliament should be cautious about the effects of this decision, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Iran’s highest ranking military authority that is in charge of both the Guards and the regular army.

Ebrahim Raisi, the president of Iran, chimed in as well, describing the action of the European Parliament as one of “desperation.”

Election disputes in Sindh “do not augur well” for general elections

The problems that marred the second round of Sindh’s local body elections, according to the Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN), do not auger well for the general elections, which are anticipated later this year.

Local elections on January 15 were hampered by delayed results, which led political groups including Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and others to accuse the elections of being rigged.

In its assessment on the polls, the FAFEN stated that “controversies over the quality of electoral processes do not augur well, particularly when the political parties are preparing for general elections that are constitutionally due by October 11, 2023.”

According to the electoral watchdog, many of these difficulties are caused by flaws in the legal system that oversees elections, which must be fixed through extensive conversations with all political actors, regardless of their political differences, coming together for electoral reforms.

According to the report, the process of democratisation would continue to deteriorate along with popular confidence in democracy and its capacity to raise peoples’ social and economic well-being unless elections result in political stability.

KHYBER: A terrorist attack on a police checkpoint in Khyber Agency, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, resulted in the martyrdom of at least three police officers on Thursday.

The police station was set on fire after the checkpoint in Tekhta Beg was attacked by terrorists who utilised explosive material, according to the local police.

Firefights between the police and terrorists are still going on.

The Pak-Afghanistan highway was shut down immediately after the attack, and a sizable police detachment was sent to the checkpoint.

The attack on the police checkpoint was described as a suicide attack by Jamrud SHO Shah Khalid while speaking to reporters. The checkpoint was entered by the suicide bomber, who then detonated himself.

He said, “When the police saw the suicide bomber, they opened fire on the target.”

Manzoor Shah and Younis Khan, two policemen, were killed in the attack, and Rafiq, a chef at the checkpoint, died from his injuries after being taken to a hospital in Peshawar.

Pakistan earlier in the day requested the Iranian authorities to look into the cross-border terror incident in the Panjgur district of Balochistan and bring the perpetrators to justice as the nation continues to deal with cross-border terrorism.

On January 14, amid a gunfight with terrorists who had launched a nighttime attack at a police station in Peshawar, three police officers, among them, were also embraced martyrs.
