Bitcoin Seems to Be Holding Its Own, Even Going Green, While Big Tech Stocks Crumble
On July 25, 2021, bitcoin began a miraculous run that would be highlighted by a 5% increase late that night (Eastern Time). In the middle of October, Bitcoin was trading for over $30,000; by November, it had risen to a record high of around $68,000.
That time period, which is already ancient history, sprang into my brain unexpectedly last week. On October 25 at 1 PM EST, Bitcoin was trading at $19,808.06, reached a high of $20,176, and was trading at $20,126.20 at 2 PM ET. In an hour where prices can only rise, the low point was also $19,808.06.
Even while this change wasn’t as shocking as the one in July 2021, it nonetheless got people talking (astute readers will see another such candle on the morning of October 26). This hour of price movement cannot be seen as the beginning of another run-up to all-time highs, and I am not claiming that past performance is predictive of future results (though history tends to rhyme). Let’s be honest, though: The Bitcoin market has been dull lately, and last week was especially so. The rise is especially notable given the terrible performance of large technology companies’ equities last week.
Remember inflation?
To kick things off, let’s talk about the positive week Bitcoin had. There could be several factors behind the rise in Bitcoin’s price on Wednesday, but here are two that stand out. In a surprising move to the financial markets, the Bank of Canada only increased interest rates by 50 basis points instead of the expected 75 basis points. New house sales dropped by 10.9 percent in September, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
Both contribute to the same theory: that central banks may delay further rate hikes now that the economy is slowing down sufficiently to control inflation. The Canadian government failed to increase by as much as was predicted. Meanwhile, a soaring property market in the United States has contributed to rising prices. Perhaps the U.S. Federal Reserve will begin to consider reducing its own rate increases in response to the dip in home sales.

Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies saw gains, but Big Tech as a whole had losses. This past week saw quarterly financial reports from Alphabet (GOOGL), Amazon (AMZN), Apple (AAPL), Meta Platforms (META), and Microsoft (MFST). With the exception of Apple, all of these businesses had a rough go of it. GOOGL lost 6.2%, Amazon lost 13.3%, Apple gained 4.5%, Meta plummeted 23.50%, and Microsoft lost 4.80% between October 24 and October 28. The value of bitcoin, meanwhile, rose by 6.8 percent.
Imran Khan and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) resumed their long march from Kamoke on Day 4.

Since the vote of no-confidence against him, by-elections have seen Imran win 29 of 37 seats, “which is more than a 3/4 majority,” according to the PTI.

People have completely turned against the regime change operation, or awaam. After Imran handily won the National Assembly seat of NA-45 Kurram on Sunday, the previous ruling party declared victory. His opponent, Jamil Khan of the JUI-F, was supported by the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM).
A reporter’s death in a container accident in Sadhoke on the third day of the PTI’s Haqeeqi Azadi march led to its temporary suspension for a day. The party leader, Asad Umar, has declared that the march will resume from Kamoke today.
Fawad Chaudhry, a member of the PTI, said that the march, led by Imran Khan, would arrive in Gujranwala today.
He further said that PTI convoys from Karachi would leave for Islamabad today via Hyderabad and Sukkur and that the KP convoy would leave via Bada.

Scientists have created a quick and easy test for creativity that takes only four minutes, and you can give it a shot right now.

The Divergent Association Task (DAT) is a procedure in which participants are asked to come up with a list of 10 nouns that are as dissimilar from one another in meaning as possible. If we compare “cat” and “book” to “cat” and “dog,” we see that they are more dissimilar.
The program calculates the “semantic distance” between the nouns the user has come up with, or how much conceptual overlap there is between them. Analysis of 8,914 participant responses indicates that DAT is as excellent as, if not better than, other approaches for predicting a person’s level of creative thinking.
“Several theories claim that creative persons are able to create more varied thoughts,” the authors of the 2021 study noted. If this holds true, the semantic distance between seemingly unrelated words could be used as a quantitative indicator of how different people’s minds tend to work.
DAT competed with two other existing measures of creativity: the Alternative Applications Task (which asks participants to come up with as many uses as they can for an object) and the Bridge-the-Associative Gap Task (which asks participants to link two words with a third word).
Since the DAT scores for creativity correlated equally well with the other scores as they did with one another, this suggests that the DAT is just as useful in assessing creativity as more complex methods. In addition, the findings suggest that its efficacy holds across a variety of demographics, making it an excellent choice for large-scale surveys.
The new DAT exam has many advantages over previous versions, the most notable of which is its ease of use, its speed, and the fact that it does not require human scoring, which could introduce bias. The researchers emphasize, however, that it does not capture all facets of creative thinking.

Soon after the triumphant conclusion of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, I would be in Beijing on my first bilateral visit since taking office.

President Xi has often stated the need for a worldwide effort, an international reaction, and international cooperation. Given the current international situation, the importance of the strategic alliance between China and Pakistan has risen dramatically.
Geographic necessity, shared values, growing economic ties, and a shared sense of destiny have all combined to make us an ideal match. Pakistan is dedicated to advancing our all-weather strategic partnership of collaboration to a new level of confidence and close cooperation, as well as deepening our bilateral connections between our two nations and continuing our mutual support on essential issues and efforts for regional peace and connectivity.

It really touched me to see that even young children had donated money after seeing footage of the floods in Pakistan. These heartfelt accounts are a perfect illustration of the brotherly love and camaraderie that unite our two nations.
As it strives for strong, sustainable, and inclusive economic development, Pakistan is currently on the hammer of a historic transformation.
Due to the global economic slowdown, rising food and oil prices, and supply chain disruptions, Pakistan’s economy faces a variety of issues as well. My government is working tirelessly to protect and develop our nation’s natural resources in spite of the global economic downturn.
We take heart in China’s progress toward both the first-century aim of creating a moderately wealthy society and the second-century goal of creating a fully-functioning socialist state as we work toward these ends.
The Chinese economy is Pakistan’s most important trading partner and investor. Our goal is to strengthen economic links between the two countries by maximising the potential of the second phase of the China-Pakistan free trade agreement.
Pakistan has the potential to become China’s manufacturing hub and an integral part of China’s supply chain. Pakistan, the fifth most populous country in the world, offers Chinese companies attractive investment opportunities in the areas of industry, agriculture modernization, infrastructure, green energy, and the digital economy because of its large young population, talented human resource, and burgeoning market with immense growth potential.
The river basins of Pakistan have provided food for the rest of the subcontinent for millennia. Our two nations can move bilateral collaboration in agriculture forward by capitalising on our shared strengths in several areas: corporate farming; water efficiency; hybrid seed development; high-yield crop research; and the establishment of cold storage networks.
The value of this collaboration has grown as a means of resolving shared concerns about food security. The threat of extinction from climate change is real and immediate.
One-third of Pakistan’s landmass was flooded in the recent record floods, affecting nearly 33 million people and causing enormous economic damage. This climate-related disaster should serve as an alarm to the sceptics and a rallying cry for everyone to work together.
China has strengthened its disaster response mechanism and is a prominent voice in the effort to mitigate the negative effects of climate change. China’s technological advances in early warning systems, disaster management, and infrastructure resilience are areas where we hope to gain insight. The knowledge-based economy is currently the primary factor in national prosperity.
We’re concentrating on establishing tech parks and smart cities in Pakistan and facilitating e-commerce there. We are impressed by China’s rapid technological development and hope to increase our collaboration in cutting-edge fields such as quantum computing, robotics, AI, and big data.
President Xi Jinping’s ambitious Belt and Road Initiative counts Pakistan as its earliest partner. Alongside BRI, President Xi’s Global Development Initiative has our full backing because it will help advance the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
As a significant partner country, Pakistan is excited to collaborate with China to achieve GDI objectives. The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, the BRI’s crown jewel, has breathed fresh life into our country’s economic growth in only a few short years. With great pride, I recollect that my brother, the late Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, oversaw the official introduction of CPEC.
Many important energy and public transportation projects, such as the coal power plants at Sahiwal, the Quaid-e-Azam Solar Power Park, and Pakistan’s first Lahore Orange Line mass transit project, were completed under my leadership as Chief Minister of Punjab.
CPEC is the backbone of my government’s development programme because of the profound impact it would have on Pakistan and, in turn, the rest of the region. Under its aegis, completed energy and transportation infrastructure projects have paved the way for Pakistan’s economic revival and established a firm basis for collaboration across a wide range of fields.
Key sectors such as industry, energy, agriculture, ICT, rail and road network, and expanding Gwadar Port as a hub of commerce and transhipment, investment, and regional connectivity would be prioritised in the next phase of high-quality development for CPEC.
Our ultimate goal is to use CPEC to boost Pakistan’s economy and improve people’s living conditions in a way that is both equitable and long-lasting. Maintaining the security of Chinese workers and infrastructure in Pakistan is an ongoing priority.
We all mourn the loss of life in Pakistan at the hands of the Chinese. Our friendship and business cooperation are too important to risk losing to anyone. My government will make every effort to find and punish those responsible for these crimes.
A casual observer may assume that national interests on both sides are driving the growing friendship between Pakistan and China. Our shared history and proximity to one another may have facilitated our friendship, according to a historian.
For us in Pakistan, however, and in our hearts, the bonds of brotherhood between our two peoples run much deeper, going beyond the conventional understanding of international relations to forge a bond that will last all of the time.
To ensure that the finest traditions of our bilateral friendship are passed on and that the next generation understands its relevance in today’s rapidly evolving world, we must redouble our efforts to increase cultural exchanges between our two nations and to bring our people together. With a shared commitment to the prosperity of our people and regional peace and stability, Pakistan and China have become indispensable partners.
The weight of history rests on our shoulders, and we want to carry it with honour. In his address to the Pakistani Parliament in April 2015, President Xi praised our connection, calling it “taller than mountains, deeper than seas, and sweeter than honey,” and he said that it would help us achieve our joint goals. As long as there is the friendship between Pakistan and China, the world will be a better place.

The team, led by Director FIA Athar Wahid and Deputy Director IB Umar Shahid Hamid, formally launched the investigation today, questioning key witnesses in the murder, Waqar Ahmed and Khurram Ahmed.

The problem in Pakistan has intensified into a serious threat to children’s lives as the floodwaters and media attention subside. Children who are weak and hungry are fighting a lost struggle against acute respiratory infections, severe acute malnutrition, diarrhoea, malaria, dengue fever, typhoid, and painful skin disorders. Along with physical issues, children’s mental health is also at stake while the crisis drags on.
“Nearly 10 million kids require urgent, life-saving assistance. Already, hundreds of people have perished. In this country, severe acute malnutrition, a disease that can be fatal, affects more than 1 in 9 children. Parents in a panic are looking for food to give their kids even a basic supper at home.
“I met Farida in a camp in Sohbatpur, Balochistan. She and her five children had abandoned their beloved house when the floods hit. She was utterly concerned for Rasheeda, her one-year-old daughter, who was clearly thin and feeble due to acute malnutrition.
“Their story is one of countless others. Boys and girls crowded inside flimsy tents, assuming they are fortunate enough to have one, will continue to pass away from illnesses that are normally avoidable and treatable as winter approaches.
“Our assistance is essential for the boys and girls of Pakistan to survive. However, funding for the global appeal for Pakistan is still woefully inadequate. If foreign assistance is not provided to scale up measures, hundreds more children will die in the upcoming weeks.
But this tale of climate catastrophe is not only Pakistan’s story.
“Over 15 million boys and girls are in need of aid after floods brought on by climate change devastated Pakistan, Bangladesh, northern India, and Afghanistan in 2022 alone.
Extreme heatwaves with temperatures reaching up to 48 degrees have scorched the region’s populous cities. While landslides in Nepal have destroyed children’s homes and rising sea levels continue to endanger the very survival of the Maldives, glaciers have continued to melt in Pakistan and Bhutan.
“Children are suffering the most as a result of the climatic crisis in South Asia, despite having had no part in its creation. Over 616 million boys and girls who live in this region are at risk of losing their lives as a result of this climatic calamity.
Governments must need to safeguard the essential services for health, education, sanitation, and hygiene that girls and boys so desperately rely on. They must also take immediate steps to ensure that each boy and girl has the information and abilities necessary for them to live and prosper in a world with changing climates.
But mainly, world leaders need to act quickly to keep global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The lives of children can only be saved in this way.
“I fear that the climatic crisis we have seen in Pakistan may simply be the beginning of many such catastrophes affecting child survival in the future without urgent global action.”
