Cypher scandal prompts the government to name an acting foreign secretary

ISLAMABAD: Since the government was unable to select the chief diplomat, a “stopgap” arrangement was established, the controversy surrounding the secret diplomatic communication has placed doubt on the nomination of a new foreign secretary.

After retiring on Thursday after attaining the age of retirement, Sohail Mehmood’s position as foreign secretary became vacant.

prime minister to address 77th unga session on friday 1663492739 2409

Asad Majid, who wrote the letter in March while serving as Pakistan’s ambassador to Washington, was previously said to be in line to become the country’s new foreign secretary.

However, the diplomatic cable, which the former prime minister Imran Khan has cited as proof of US controversy behind his removal through a vote of no-confidence earlier in the year, has reportedly prompted the government to review its decision as new audio leaks have surfaced, bringing it back into the spotlight.

According to a source in the foreign office who spoke to The Express Tribune, Asad Majid’s name was unable to be agreed upon, thus Jauhar Saleem, a grade 22 foreign service officer who is now serving as special secretary for Europe, was given extra responsibility as foreign secretary.

Russian forces are becoming more frail in the Ukraine war, according to the British military chief

According to Britain’s Chief of Defense Staff Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, Russia’s mobilisation has revealed the growing strain the Kremlin is facing as its military forces exhibit “increasing fragility and frailty” in the conflict in Ukraine.

“Pressure points exist. The Russian military forces are rather fragile, Radakin told a select gathering of reporters in Washington.

However, Radakin emphasised that the war remained sluggish and that Ukraine was prepared to capitalise on Russian “pressure points” more fully over time. He did not foresee a quick collapse of the Russian military.

“The fundamental character of the struggle is one of grinding gains that are grabbed and expanded upon. You’re not noticing a significant change in the ratio of the two, he added.

His remarks come soon after Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday gave a 37-minute anti-Western tirade in Moscow before announcing plans to annex four areas of Ukraine, a move that was condemned as illegitimate by Ukraine, the United States, the European Union, and the head of the UN.

The four areas of Ukraine that Russia is annexing are only partially under its authority.

Putin was speaking while his troops were being ringed in the Ukrainian city of Lyman, 750 kilometres (460 miles) to the south, and Ukraine warned Moscow would have to make a plea to Kyiv if it wanted them to be allowed to leave.

According to Radakin, Putin’s comments, notably his heightened nuclear bluster, show how “weak and desperate” Russia is feeling.

He said, “And the speech grows more and more erratic.”

According to him, Ukraine still had more prospects in the northeast and east of the nation after launching a swift counteroffensive this month that allowed it to retake large portions of the Kharkiv area.

When asked if the Russian mobilisation had any effect on the Ukrainian military, Radakin responded, “In a military or tactical sense, none at all.”

The strain that Russia is facing has been disclosed, Radakin said, adding that the mobilisation of Russian soldiers had been ordered to bring bandages and winter clothes.

The mobilisation, he claimed, “was done in such a cack-handed, incompetent, and frightening fashion, that I don’t think it instilled any terror in the Ukrainian armed forces.”

And if anything, the fact that they are succeeding “adds to (Ukraine’s) motivation.”

Attacked annexation area will be an attack on Russia, according to the Kremlin

Attacks on any portion of the territories of Ukraine that Russia is preparing to annexed will be viewed by the Kremlin as acts of aggression against Russia itself, it was announced on Friday.

As part of its plan to annex four areas of Ukraine, Russia, according to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, would “de jure” merge portions of Ukraine that are not under its control into itself.

Russia is taking steps to annex the Ukrainian provinces of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia after staging so-called referendums there.

The ballots, according to Western nations and Kiev, violated international law and were coerced and unrepresentative.

Slain Ukrainian citizens are discovered as Russian forces retreat from Kupiansk’s outskirts.

As defeated Russian soldiers withdrew from the outskirts of the northeastern Ukrainian town of Kupiansk, at least 11 people met terrible ends there, according to AFP reporters.

The Ukrainian soldiers who discovered the collection of wrecked civilian vehicles with dead and occasionally charred bodies claimed they thought Russian forces had targeted a convoy of civilians.

It was unable to independently verify this. The six cars still contain the remains of the deceased, and the route leading from the Kharkiv area settlement of Kyrylivka is still open to artillery bombardment.

“And you can see the bullet holes, so definitely they were shot at…” Without a professional, it is hard to identify who set fire to one automobile.

After its invasion in February, Russia’s soldiers were in control of a large portion of northern and eastern Ukraine, but this month a quick counteroffensive in the Kharkiv region drove them out.

In the east of the area, on the Oskil river, the Russians attempted to establish a new frontline, but Ukrainian armour has now crossed the river, and while firing is still occurring, the retreat is proceeding.

Throughout the seven-month conflict, Russian soldiers have been accused of torturing and killing residents in seized regions.

In a region that was previously held by Russian forces until earlier this week, the road where the remains of the civilians were discovered runs next to a train line on a low embankment that is open to fields and woodland on both sides.

Four people’s carbonised corpses are inside a tiny vehicle or minibus that has been entirely destroyed by fire. These bodies are all little enough to have been children, at least one of them.

A cream-colored Lada automobile is stopped in front of the bus with the boot open, and a middle-aged guy wearing a cap and blue trousers is lying dead next to a plastic bag of baggage.

Reporters from AFP counted 11 corpses total at the scene.

The limit on free dollar purchases is extended by Lebanon’s central bank till the end of October.

According to a central bank statement, Lebanon’s central bank on Friday extended a circular allowing banks to buy an unlimited number of US dollars on its Sayrafa exchange platform until the end of October.

The official exchange rate of 1.507 pounds to a dollar will be changed on Wednesday, the finance ministry of Lebanon announced, calling this a step toward harmonising several prices that have formed during Lebanon’s three-year financial crisis.

However, after announcing that it would go into effect on November 1, the ministry then tied the action to the ratification of a financial recovery plan, the most recent iteration of which is being debated in parliament.

Since the recovery plan, which must address a $72 billion deficit in the national budget, has been under debate since 2019, several economists and lawmakers regarded this as a government retreat.

The market value of the pound has decreased by more than 95% since Lebanon’s financial crisis, which has forced large segments of the people into poverty, and is now valued at 38,000 to the dollar.

According to famous human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh, Iranian protesters seek to replace the country’s government.

Internationally recognised Iranian human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh stated in an interview that there is a “clear desire” for regime change in the continuing anti-government rallies amid Iran.

According to Sotoudeh, “What is more obvious is that there is clearly a need for change in the system.”

“Regime change and no going back to the old ways are what the people demand. A very serious potential of a regime transition is also evident from the recent rallies and strikes that have been called, she continued.

Sotoudeh stated that she expected further repression from the Iranian government.

“The investigation will go on. But so will the demonstrations. No of the manner of the crackdown, I in no way envisage a return to the old, she added. “Even if the demands of the people are not satisfied, reality will have changed forever. The required veil will no longer be accepted.

Sotoudeh, 59, has defended opposition activists, including women who were accused of breaking the law by not wearing the required hijab. She was detained in 2018 and accused of espionage, disseminating false information, and insulting the supreme leader of Iran.

Sotoudeh received a sentence of 38 years in jail and 148 lashes notwithstanding his denial of the accusations.

She is now on medical leave from jail.

Sotoudeh was sentenced to six years in prison in 2010 after being found guilty of plotting to undermine national security and related propaganda crimes, both of which she vehemently rejected.

In 2012, she received the Sakharov Prize for human rights from the European Parliament.

After Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish woman, was declared dead on September 16, protests broke out all around Iran. On September 13, in Tehran, she was arrested by the morality police for reportedly failing to wear a headscarf in accordance with the rigid regime’s norms. Shortly after her arrest, she went into a coma.

Videos posted to social media on Friday indicated that the protests persisted in a number of places.

The demonstrations resulted in the deaths of at least 83 individuals, including children, according to Iran Human Rights, a Norwegian organisation.

Cholera outbreaks are spreading globally, and death rates are rising: WHO

With outbreaks recorded in 26 countries and substantial increases in mortality rates, cholera cases have risen sharply this year, especially in areas of poverty and violence, a World Health Organization official said on Friday.

Less than 20 nations typically record outbreaks of the illness each year, which is spread by the consumption of tainted food or water and can result in severe diarrhoea.

According to Philippe Barboza, WHO Team Lead for Cholera, “we are seeing a very disturbing uptick” in cholera outbreaks worldwide during the past year after years of decline.

According to him, the average death rate in Africa so far this year has nearly quadrupled compared to the five-year average and is presently over 3%.

Cholera usually only causes minor or no symptoms, but if left untreated, it can be fatal within hours.
A cholera epidemic in Syria has already claimed the lives of at least 33 people, posing a threat to those fighting on the country’s 11-year-long frontlines and inciting worry in congested displaced persons’ camps.

Barboza also raised worry about epidemics in Pakistan, where certain places are under water, as well as the Horn of Africa and other countries of Asia.

Before the end of this year, he claimed that just a few million doses of vaccines will be usable, citing a lack of producers as one of the issues.

Cholera vaccinations are kept in an emergency stockpile by WHO.

In order to respond to both acute outbreaks and even less to be able to launch preventative vaccination campaigns that may be a method to lower the risk for many nations, he added, “it is very evident that we do not have enough vaccine.”

Due to variations in national monitoring systems, there was no global estimate of the number of cholera cases, he added.

Cabinet committee established to investigate cypher allegedly taken from PM House

image 189 9

ISLAMABAD: According to a statement from the prime minister’s office, the federal cabinet on Friday announced the creation of a committee to look into the diplomatic code that was allegedly “taken” from the Prime Minister’s House documents. The cypher was displayed by former prime minister and PTI Chairman Imran Khan on March 27 at a public event before he was ousted, claiming that the US had threatened his government and that the Opposition was complicit in the plot. Imran Khan was removed from office following a vote of no-confidence.

According to the statement from the PM office, which was released following the cabinet meeting presided over by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the body received a briefing on the topic of diplomatic cypher during which it was revealed that a copy of the necessary document was missing from the records of the Prime Minister House. The statement read, “The meeting was informed that, despite the Prime Minister’s House having a record of the receipt of the cypher delivered to the previous premier, its copy is not available in the record. The cable is a possession of the Prime Minister’s House, according to the legislation, it was added.

Iran police station is attacked by gunmen who fire shots and throw Molotov cocktails

State media said that on Friday, gunmen opened fire and threw Molotov cocktails at a police station in the Sistan-Baluchestan province of Iran.

The official TV said that “a number of police officers as well as bystanders had been hurt in the exchange of fire” in the provincial capital of Zahedan.

Attacks or battles between security forces and armed groups in the province, which borders Pakistan and Afghanistan, sometimes include smuggling gangs as well as separatist or extremist organisations.

The same province’s border crossing with Afghanistan was the scene of the death of an Iranian border guard in June, according to the country’s foreign ministry at the time.

The Islamic Republic has been shaken by protests since Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman, died while in the morality police’s care.

On September 16, Amini was declared dead, three days after she had reportedly broken the rigorous dress code of the nation.

a threat to the government? Ethnic minority anti-mobilization protests are happening in Russia.

Russia is experiencing a surge of protests against President Vladimir Putin’s demand for “partial mobilisation” in places with significant concentrations of ethnic minorities. According to analysts, this strategy undermines the legitimacy of the Russian government among these groups and is likely to deliver Russia poorly motivated soldiers for its conflict with Ukraine.

Protesters succeeded in stopping traffic on September 25 in the Caucasian Dagestan area of Russia close to the Georgian border. A group named the Free Buryatia Foundation has been established to assist reservists evade the “partial mobilisation” Putin promised after Ukraine’s lightning advances in the east, more than 7,000 kilometres away in the Buryatia area near the Mongolian border.

Putin’s proposals encountered severe opposition in the remote Arctic province of Yakutia in northeastern Siberia as well.

“Disparate price” being paid by minorities
The latter rallying cry reflects a growing concern that, in order to send additional troops to Ukraine, Moscow is unfairly targeting ethnic minorities and residents of Russia’s poorest regions.

The mobilisation in Buryatia, according to Alexandra Garmzhapova, president of the Free Buryatia Foundation, is not biassed. One of Russia’s most underdeveloped regions is Buryatia.

download 2022 09 30T131901.282

Moscow has forced the Tatar minority in Crimea, a Ukrainian peninsula that Russia annexed in 2014, to enlist first. Russian writer and activist Osman Pashaev noted on Facebook that “Crimean Tatars were issued 80% of summonses for mobilisation in Crimea.”

It is evident that ethnic minorities in the poorest areas are paying a disproportionate price, not just for the mobilisation effort but also for other factors.

Moscow does not disclose all of its front-line casualties. Stephen Hall, a Russia expert at Bath University, continued, “even with the limited official information, you can see that regions with big ethnic minorities – such as Buryatia or the [nearby] Tuva region – have lost a lot more men compared to their entire population than Russia’s core regions.”

Social and economic factors contribute to this inequality. According to Caress Schenk, a political scientist at Nazarbayev University in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, “In those districts, the relatively good compensation the Russian military gives is sometimes the only way out of poverty.” Because of this, Hall remarked that these outlying people were overrepresented in the Russian army “even before the war in Ukraine.”

In 2023, India will hold the inaugural MotoGP race.

By web desk

Thailand’s Buriram : The first MotoGP race in India will take place in 2023, according to organisers, who hope to draw more spectators to the 1.4 billion-person nation.

In Uttar Pradesh, south of New Delhi, on the Buddh International Circuit, the inaugural race is slated to take place.

The track has previously hosted three Formula One Grand Prix events between 2011 and 2013.

The chief executive of Dorna, the organisation that organises and promotes the MotoGP, Carmelo Ezpeleta, said in a statement, “We have a lot of fans in India and we’re pleased to be able to bring the sport to them.”

India is a crucial market for the motorcycle industry and, consequently, for MotoGP as the highest level of motorsport.

download 26

It happens shortly after Dorna declared that Kazakhstan will be included on the MotoGP schedule for the upcoming season.

The schedule for the upcoming season has not yet been made public, but each MotoGP will consist of two races: a sprint on Saturday and the grand prix on Sunday.

Due to a decline in spectator numbers at some European Grands Prix, MotoGP is trying to increase its global exposure.

Without mentioning a date or circuit, Dorna and Saudi Arabia signed a memorandum of understanding earlier this month to have Saudi Arabia host one of the world championship rounds.

After coronavirus-related delays, MotoGP competition got underway at Thailand’s Buriram circuit for the first time since 2019.

Fabio Quartararo of France, the current world champion, is in first place with 219 points.

Numerous people are trapped in flooded homes in Florida as Ian strengthens again into a hurricane.

In order to reach the thousands of Floridians stranded inside the flooded homes and destroyed structures left by Hurricane Ian, which made landfall in South Carolina before moving into the Atlantic Ocean, rescue workers Thursday steered boats and wade through flooded streets.

download 2022 09 30T061628.395

Ian strengthened back to a hurricane Thursday evening after emerging over the Atlantic Ocean, having weakened to a tropical storm hours earlier when it crossed the Florida peninsula. The Category 1 storm was expected to make landfall in South Carolina on Friday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

download 2022 09 30T061638.794

A day after Ian made landfall in Florida, the extent of the damage it caused became clear. It was one of the strongest storms ever to hit the US, a monstrous Category 4 hurricane, and it inundated homes on both of the state’s coasts, cut off the only bridge to a barrier island, destroyed a historic waterfront pier, and cut off electricity to 2.67 million homes and businesses in Florida, or nearly a quarter of all utility customers.

After the hurricane hit the island on Tuesday, at least one man was confirmed dead in Florida, and two other deaths were recorded in Cuba.

Aerial images from the Fort Myers region, a few miles west of the location where Ian made landfall, showed houses torn from their foundations and dumped amid the shredded debris. nearby businesses

“I don’t know how anyone could have survived in there,” William Goodson said amid the wreckage of the mobile home park in Fort Myers Beach where he’d lived for 11 years.

The hurricane tore through the park of about 60 homes, many of them, including Goodson’s single-wide home destroyed or mangled beyond repair. Wading through waist-deep water, Goodson and his son wheeled two trash cans containing what little he could salvage of his belongings — a portable air conditioner, some tools and a baseball bat.

The road into Fort Myers was littered with broken trees, boat trailers and other debris. Cars were left abandoned in the roadway, having stalled when the storm surge flooded their engines.

“We’ve never seen storm surge of this magnitude,” Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis told a news conference. “The amount of water that’s been rising, and will likely continue to rise today even as the storm is passing, is basically a 500-year flooding event.”

After leaving Florida as a tropical storm Thursday and entering the Atlantic Ocean north of Cape Canaveral, Ian spun up into a hurricane again with winds of 75 mph (120 kph). The hurricane center predicted it would continue to strengthen before hitting South Carolina on Friday, but still remain a Category 1 storm.

A hurricane warning was issued for the South Carolina coast and extended to Cape Fear on the southeastern coast of North Carolina. With tropical-storm force winds reaching 415 miles (667 kilometres) from its center, Ian was forecast to shove storm surge of 5 feet (1.5 meters) into coastal areas in Georgia and the Carolinas. Rainfall of up to 8 inches (20.32 centimetres) threatened flooding from South Carolina to Virginia.

Sheriffs in southwest Florida said 911 centers were inundated by thousands of stranded callers, some with life-threatening emergencies. The US Coast Guard began rescue efforts hours before daybreak on barrier islands near where Ian struck, DeSantis said. More than 800 members of federal urban search-and-rescue teams were also in the area.

In the Orlando area, Orange County firefighters used boats to reach people in a flooded neighbourhood. A photo the department posted on Twitter showed one firefighter carrying someone in his arms through knee-deep water. At an area nursing home, patients were carried on stretchers across floodwaters to a waiting bus.

Among those rescued was Joseph Agboona. “We were happy to get out,” he said after grabbing two bags of possessions when water rose to the windows in his Orlando home. “It was very, very bad.”

In Fort Myers, Valerie Bartley’s family spent desperate hours holding a dining room table against their patio door, fearing the storm raging outside “was tearing our house apart.”

“I was terrified,” Bartley said. “What we heard was the shingles and debris from everything in the neighborhood hitting our house.”

The storm ripped away patio screens and snapped a palm tree in the yard, Bartley said, but left the roof intact and her family unharmed.

In Fort Myers, some people left shelters to return home Thursday afternoon. Long lines formed at gas stations and a Home Depot opened, letting in a few customers at a time.

Frank Pino was near the back of the line, with about 100 people in front of him.

“I hope they leave something,” Pino said, “because I need almost everything.”

Authorities confirmed at least one Florida death — a 72-year-old man in Deltona who fell into a canal while using a hose to drain his pool in the heavy rain, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said. Two other storm deaths were reported in Cuba.

Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno said his office was scrambling to respond to thousands of 911 calls in the Fort Myers area, but many roads and bridges were impassable.

Emergency crews sawed through toppled trees to reach stranded people. Many in the hardest-hit areas were unable to call for help because of electrical and cellular outages.

A chunk of the Sanibel Causeway fell into the sea, cutting off access to the barrier island where 6,300 people live. It was unknown how many heeded orders to evacuate, but Charlotte County Emergency Management Director Patrick Fuller expressed cautious optimism.

No deaths or injuries have been confirmed in the county, and flyovers of barrier islands show “the integrity of the homes is far better than we anticipated,” Fuller said.

King Charles III is shown on a coin by the Royal Mint of the UK.

London: The official effigy of King Charles III, which will be used on coins after his succession to the throne, was unveiled by Britain’s Royal Mint on Friday.

The effigy was created by British sculptor Martin Jennings and was given the new king’s personal approval.

download 2022 09 30T055801.656

A unique £5 coin and a 50p coin honouring the life of Queen Elizabeth II will be the first coins with the king’s image on them.

Jennings claimed that a photo of the Charles served as the model for his portrait.

It is the smallest piece I have ever produced, but knowing that people will view and hold it for generations to come is humbling, he said.

In line with royal tradition, Charles’s portrait faces to the left, the opposite direction to his late mother.

A Latin inscription surrounding the effigy translates as “King Charles III, by the Grace of God, Defender of the Faith”.

The image of Charles will begin to appear on coins in circulation and on commemorative pieces in the coming months, the Royal Mint said in a statement.

Two new portraits of Elizabeth will feature on the reverse of the commemorative five pound coin.

The Royal Mint has been responsible for depicting monarchs on coins for over 1,100 years since Alfred the Great.

Elizabeth died on September 8 following a record-breaking 70 years on the throne.

Kevin Clancy, director of the Royal Mint Museum, said late queen had appeared on more coins than any other British monarch.

“Over the coming years it will become common for people to find coins bearing His Majesty and Queen Elizabeth II’s effigy in their change,” he said.

The Royal Mint said historically it had been commonplace for coins featuring the effigies of different monarchs to co-circulate.

“This ensures a smooth transition, with minimal environmental impact and cost.”

There are currently around 27 billion coins circulating in the UK bearing the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.

“These will be replaced over time as they become damaged or worn and to meet demand for additional coins,” the Royal Mint added.

Shan Masood will be the next leader of Yorkshire.

Shan Masood of Pakistan will be named Yorkshire’s new captain for 2023, according to the county’s coach, Ottis Gibson, who revealed future plans for the batter — the county’s new overseas signing — on Wednesday.

Gibson told journalists at Headingley that the Pakistan batter, who has signed a two-year contract with Derbyshire, will lead the county in all competitions next summer.

“From what we’ve discussed with Shan, he’ll be the club captain going forward,” Gibson said.

“The players are aware of this; Shan will be club captain, and he will bring his own leadership style.”

However, it is unclear whether the Pakistani batter will captain Yorkshire in Division One or Division Two next season.

The 32-year-old has been named to both squads for the T20 World Cup and the current England series.

Masood told reporters at the National Stadium in Karachi earlier this month that county was his best experience in terms of player development.

Hand Cooling or Compression Can Relieve Chemo-Induced Neuropathy

According to research presented at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Congress 2022, women who wore frozen or tight-fitting gloves during chemotherapy for breast cancer were less likely to develop moderate to severe peripheral neuropathy. While both methods were effective, the compression method was easier to use and tolerated.

Certain chemotherapy drugs are known to cause peripheral neuropathy, or nerve damage in the extremities. This can cause pain, burning, tingling, numbness, or decreased sensation in the hands and feet, interfering with daily activities and decreasing quality of life.

Cryotherapy of hypothermia is one method for treating peripheral neuropathy that uses cold temperatures to limit blood circulation to the hands and feet, reducing the amount of toxic drugs that reach the peripheral nerves. Breast cancer patients who wore gloves and socks containing a frozen gel during chemotherapy were less likely to develop symptoms of nerve damage in their hands and feet, according to a previous study. Hand and foot compression may have a similar effect. A similar approach restricts blood flow to the scalp with tight-fitting cooling caps, which reduces chemo-induced hair loss.

A study found that loneliness and unhappiness accelerate ageing faster than smoking.

Medical history, lifestyle, and genetics all influence how quickly a person ages.
Recently, researchers discovered that a person’s mental health is also a risk factor for accelerated ageing.
Certain psychological issues, such as hopelessness, unhappiness, and loneliness, increase a person’s biological age more than smoking, according to researchers.

Aging is a natural life process that everyone goes through.

The process, however, is not always the same for everyone. Factors such as your medical history, lifestyle, and genetics can all have a significant impact on how your mind and body age.

Previous research, for example, has shown that smokingTrusted Source, dietTrusted Source, and stress all accelerate biological ageing.

Deep Longevity Limited researchers in Hong Kong, People’s Republic of China, have discovered evidence that a person’s mental health affects ageing just as much as physical health.

The researchers discovered that combining certain psychological states can increase a person’s biological age more than smoking.

The Winding Road to Optimal Temperature Management Following Cardiac Arrest

Two landmark trials published in 2002 found that targeted temperature management (TTM) after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest improved neurologic outcomes. The larger of the two trials discovered a decrease in mortality. Such treatment benefits are hard to come by in critical care in general, and especially in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. With the therapeutic overconfidence that characterises our profession, my institution quickly and completely embraced TTM after these trials were published. Remember, this was “back in the day,” when sepsis management included drotrecogin alfa, Cortrosyn stim tests, strict glucose control (90-120 mg/dL), and horrendous over-resuscitation via the early goal-directed therapy paradigm.

High-fiber diets may increase the risk of liver cancer in some people.

Liver cancer can be fatal, but experts are still trying to figure out how to screen for and prevent it.
A recent study suggests that a diet high in processed fibre may increase the risk of liver cancer in some people.
Bile acid testing could help identify people who are at risk of developing liver cancer and should consume less fermentable fibre.

Despite new dieting ideas and trends, it can be difficult to stick to dietary recommendations at times. Because everyone’s dietary needs differ, diets must frequently be diverse and tailored to individual needs and health risks. A recent study published in Gastroenterology looked at fermentable fiber-rich diets in mice and their risk of developing liver cancer.

The researchers discovered that eating a diet high in fermentable fibre increased the risk of developing liver cancer in mice with a specific congenital defect. These mice’s blood also had a high bile acid content.

Based on this and additional data from people, the researchers propose that screening for bile acid levels may help predict the risk of developing liver cancer. People with higher bile acid levels should be cautious about the amount of fiber-enriched processed foods they consume.

Men’s brains change after having a baby.

Darby Saxbe, a psychologist, directs the Center for the Changing Family and a research project to investigate how parents change biologically and neurobiologically in response to their babies at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences. Saxbe, an associate professor, recently had a study published in the journal Cerebral Cortex in which he discovered evidence that men develop a type of “dad brain” after the birth of their child, similar to how mothers’ brains change in response to their newborns. She talked about why studying these changes in parents is important and what she plans to do next.

Why are you researching these changes in the brains of the parents? What do you hope to learn?
Parenting is extremely important for society and public health, but it is also poorly studied from a neurobiological standpoint. We hope that our research will help shape public policies such as paid family leave and other initiatives that help new parents.

What exactly is neuroplasticity, and what does it usually mean? What changes when one becomes a parent?
Neuroplasticity is still being studied, but there is evidence that the brain changes and grows when we learn a new skill, such as playing a musical instrument, or during developmental stages such as early childhood and adolescence. Being a parent requires changes to your lifestyle and biology, as well as new skills such as being able to empathise with a nonverbal infant, so it stands to reason — but has yet to be proven — that the brain would be especially plastic during the transition to parenthood.

According to the findings, you discovered changes in the default mode network. What exactly is this network, and what do these changes mean for new fathers? What does this mean for their romantic partners?
When the brain is at rest, the default mode network refers to the regions of the brain that “light up” (not doing a particularly cognitive task). These areas are thought to be involved in mentalizing about the thoughts and feelings of others. The fact that we discovered changes in that part of the brain in both fathers and mothers suggests that the social brain is being remodelled.

You notice that these changes are taking place in the cortex. What is the cortex in charge of, especially when it comes to parenting?
The cortex is the most recently evolved part of the brain, and it is more unique to humans. It is involved in attention, planning, and executive functioning. Subcortical regions (below the cortex) are the more primitive brain structures seen in animals, and they are involved in reward, threat, and salience detection. We see both subcortical and cortical changes in mothers, but only cortical changes in fathers. It’s too soon to draw conclusions from such a small sample, but it could point to more higher-order processing in fatherhood in particular.
