After a four-year lull, Israel and Turkey will appoint ambassadors again

image 214 2

JERUSALEM/ANKARA: After months of steadily improving relations, Turkey and Israel announced on Wednesday that they will re-appoint their respective ambassadors, more than four years after they were summoned back.

Due to riots on the Gaza border against the inauguration of the US Embassy in Jerusalem, where 60 Palestinians were killed by Israeli troops, the two regional powers had their ambassadors removed in 2018.Energy, though, is emerging as a crucial area for prospective cooperation as they attempt to restore long-strained relations.

The office of Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid said on Wednesday that the two nations have resolved to fully reestablish diplomatic ties. After a conversation between the prime minister and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan.

It was decided to once again upgrade the level of the relations between the two countries to that of full diplomatic ties and to return ambassadors and consuls general,” according to a statement from Lapid’s office.

Since a childhood mishap, Australian swimmer Jessica Smith has had a tense relationship with prosthetics. However, a British bionic hand that can be updated remotely from anywhere in the globe is challenging her beliefs.

The paralympian from Athens in 2004 was born without a left hand. Her parents were advised to fit a prosthesis to aid in her development, but when she was a child, the device prompted her to upset a boiling pot, resulting in 15% of her body being burned.

The most horrific occurrence in her life was brought on by the prosthetic device, she claimed, and there has always been a connection between the two.But when Leeds, northern England-based Covvi invited her to try its Nexus hand, it piqued her interest.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA, US: To make it easier for its employees to retrieve Coke and chips from the breakroom, Alphabet Inc.’s Google is fusing the eyes and arms of real robots with the knowledge and communication abilities of virtual chatbots.

The mechanical waiters, which were demonstrated to reporters last week, represent a breakthrough in artificial intelligence that paves the way for multifunctional robots that are just as simple to operate as ones that carry out specialised chores like vacuuming or being on watch.

Google robots are not yet available for purchase. They only carry out a small number of straightforward tasks, and the corporation hasn’t yet given them the “OK, Google” summoning capability that users are accustomed to.

Nikkei reports that suppliers to Apple will produce the MacBook and Apple Watch in Vietnam

image 213 5

According to Nikkei Asia on Tuesday, which cited people familiar with the situation, suppliers to Apple Inc. are in discussions to make the Apple Watch and MacBook in Vietnam for the first time.

In addition, test production of the Apple Watch has begun in northern Vietnam by Chinese Apple supplier Luxshare Precision Industry and Taiwanese manufacturer Foxconn.

The report stated that Apple has asked suppliers to set up a test production line for the MacBook in Vietnam, and that progress in moving mass production there has been slow due in part to disruptions related to the pandemic but also because producing notebook computers involves a larger supply chain.

In addition to assembling iPad tablets, Apple has been moving some aspects of iPhone production from China to other regions, notably India, where it began producing the iPhone 13 earlier this year.

As Samantha Markle’s defamation case against the Duchess has been confirmed by a US judge, Meghan Markle appears to be in serious water.Samantha, 57, is suing the wife of Prince Harry over statements she made in an interview with Oprah Winfrey and in the unofficial biography Finding Freedom.

If they are unable to reach a settlement or have the matter resolved in mediation, a Florida court has scheduled a trial date for October 2023.Samantha disputes Meghan’s claim that she “grew up as an only child” in her TV appearance and is suing for $75,000 (£57,000) in damages.

She further asserts that the Duchess of Sussex exploited her paternal family by telling “false and nasty lies” about her fairytale “rags-to-royalty” childhood.
Samantha further asserts that she has experienced “humiliation, shame, and contempt on a global scale” as a result of the Finding Freedom book.

It follows the motion to dismiss the case made by Meghan’s legal team in papers filed with the Florida court in July. Judge Charlene Edwards Honeywell, however, has decided to move forward with the case.

Tiger Woods huddling with PGA players over LIV split

Tiger Woods huddling with PGA players over LIV split
Tiger Woods was reportedly huddling with the PGA Tour’s top professionals on Tuesday to discuss the ongoing battle with the Saudi Arabia-backed LIV golf circuit.

Woods and fellow professional Rickie Fowler jetted into Philadelphia from Florida before meeting players on the sidelines of the BMW Championship in Delaware.

Multiple US reports said Woods and around 20 of the top players on the PGA Tour were set to discuss strategies aimed at tackling LIV, which has been steadily luring players away from the tour with lucrative multi-million-dollar contracts.

download 34 3

Golf has been in turmoil since the launch of LIV this year, with Australia’s newly minted British Open champion Cam Smith reported to be the next big name to join the upstart circuit.

Woods, who is reported to have turned down between $700-800 million to join LIV, has been one of the new circuit’s most trenchant critics.

At St. Andrews last month, Woods said he “disagreed” with players who had signed with the series.

“I think that what they’ve done is they’ve turned their back on what has allowed them to get to this position,” Woods said, adding that younger players joining LIV may “never, ever get a chance to play in a major championship.”

“That, to me, I just don’t understand it,” he said.

The BMW Championship is the second leg of the PGA Tour’s lucrative season-ending FedEx Cup Playoffs.

Several players who would normally be expected to challenge in the playoffs — such as Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau — have joined LIV and been barred from playing.

Tuesday’s player meeting in Delaware comes after three LIV defectors lost a bid to force their way into the field for last week’s St Jude Championship in Memphis.

“I think it could have made things a little bit awkward, yeah,” Spanish star Jon Rahm told reporters on Tuesday.

“They chose to leave the PGA Tour, they chose to go join another tour knowing the consequences; and then try to come back and get, you know. It wouldn’t have, I would say, sit extremely well with me.”

Patrick Cantlay meanwhile joked about Woods’s role in Tuesday’s talks.

“Well, I’ve heard Tiger is the new commissioner, right?” Cantlay quipped before the meeting got under way.

“That’s what everyone has been saying. I’m going to go to the meeting. I’m going to listen to what it’s all about, and I’ll probably have more for you after.”

Elon Musk tweets he is ‘buying Manchester United’
Elon Musk tweeted Tuesday evening that he is purchasing the Manchester United football club, although it was not clear if the eccentric billionaire, currently embroiled in a lawsuit over his bid to buy Twitter, was being serious.

The 51-year-old Tesla and SpaceX CEO, who has a habit of posting provocative statements on social media for fun, said: “Also, I’m buying Manchester United ur welcome,” in a reply to an earlier tweet about supporting both of America’s two major political parties.

Manchester United, a storied English football club, is currently led by the six children of late American businessman Malcolm Glazer, who took a controlling stake in the franchise in 2005.

Shares of the team listed on the New York Stock Exchange are down year to date, but ended Tuesday flat, with a market capitalization of $2.1 billion.

The Glazer family also owns the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, an NFL franchise in Florida.

There was no immediate reaction from the club or its owners to Musk’s tweet.

Manchester United fans have protested the team’s management for poor performance in recent years, as well as their involvement in a plan to start a new “Super League” of Europe’s richest teams.

The Red Devils finished last season at sixth place in the English Premier League, but have gotten off to a rocky start this year.

After two straight losses, including a humiliating 0-4 defeat last weekend at Brentford, Manchester United currently sit at dead last — the first time they have been at the bottom of the chart in 30 years.

More protests against the Glazer family’s ownership of the club are planned ahead of United’s next game at home to Liverpool on August 22.

As for Elon Musk, the richest man in the world recently sold nearly $7 billion worth of Tesla shares, and is in a major legal battle in the US state of Delaware over his aborted plan to buy Twitter.

Top Republican Trump critic Cheney loses seat in US Congress

Top Republican Trump critic Cheney loses seat in US Congress
Republican rebel Liz Cheney lost her seat in Congress Tuesday to an election conspiracy theorist, US media projected, in the latest sign of her party’s break with traditional conservatism to embrace Donald Trump’s hardline “America First” agenda.

Once considered Republican royalty, the lawmaker from Wyoming has become a pariah in the party over her membership of the congressional panel investigating the January 6 assault on the US Capitol — and Trump’s role in fanning the flames.

Defeat for the 56-year-old elder daughter of former vice president Dick Cheney in the Wyoming Republican primary marks the end of the family’s four-decade political association with one of America’s most conservative states.

The Republican nomination to contest November’s midterms instead goes to 59-year-old lawyer Harriet Hageman — Trump’s hand-picked candidate who has amplified his false claims of a “rigged” 2020 election.

But there is already speculation that Cheney may challenge Trump for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024 — or even run as an independent — and insiders are expecting her to deliver a concession speech in the next hour that will double up as the launchpad for her political future.

Prominent Vatican cardinal accused of sexual assault in civil suit in Canada

Prominent Vatican cardinal accused of sexual assault in civil suit in Canada

Vatican Cardinal Marc Ouellet is the highest-ranking clergyman accused in a court document in Canada made public on Tuesday as part of a class action lawsuit against the Quebec Catholic diocese alleging sexual assault, the plaintiffs’ lawyer said.

download 28 3

The lawsuit represents more than 100 people, including minors, who were alleged to have been sexually assaulted by 88 priests and staff working at the Quebec diocese starting in 1940, according to a court document and a news release issued by the Arsenault Dufresne Wee firm which filed the class action.

In the filing in Quebec Superior Court, an anonymous complainant alleges Ouellet inappropriately touched her, including by rubbing her shoulders and back, and made comments that made her feel uncomfortable.

The document states the interactions took place between 2008 and 2010 when Ouellet was archbishop of Quebec and head of the diocese and she was working as a 23-year-old intern. Ouellet faces no criminal charges.

A Vatican spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Calls to Ouellet’s Vatican residence and office late on Tuesday were not answered. A representative for the Quebec diocese declined comment. Reuters could not immediately determine the identity of the cardinal’s lawyer.

Journalist found dead in northwest Mexico

Journalist found dead in northwest Mexico

A crime reporter has been found dead in northwestern Mexico, authorities said Tuesday — the latest suspected murder in what is already one of the deadliest years yet for the country’s press.

The body of Juan Arjon Lopez, an independent journalist who ran a news page on Facebook, was discovered in San Luis Rio Colorado in the northwestern state of Sonora near the US border.

download 25 3

The 62-year-old was identified from his fingerprints, a source at the Sonora attorney general’s office told AFP, hours after state prosecutor Indira Contreras told reporters that a body with tattoos matching those of Arjon had been found.

He had been reported missing on August 9.

An autopsy found that the cause of death was blunt trauma, the attorney general’s office said in a statement, adding that it was not ruling out any line of investigation.

Arjon had alternated between working as a reporter and at a local restaurant, media rights group Reporters Without Borders said.

His final news reports on his Facebook page “What are you afraid of” were about a drug seizure and the recovery of several stolen goods.

At least 13 journalists have been murdered so far this year in Mexico, one of the world’s most dangerous countries for the press, according to media rights groups.

More than 150 media workers have been killed since 2000 in the Latin American country, with only a fraction of the crimes resulting in convictions.

Fans are in amazement as Kylie Jenner tweets an amazing video of her newborn boy while out for a morning stroll.

After revealing a rare sight of her baby boy in a new video amid rumours of his name announcement, Kylie Jenner has caused the internet to go into a state of emotional breakdown.

The 25-year-old entrepreneur of Kylie Cosmetics, who had a son as her second kid earlier this year with boyfriend Travis Scott, hasn’t officially shared the baby’s name.

Fans are in amazement as Kylie Jenner tweets an amazing video of her newborn boy while out for a morning stroll.
On Monday, the beauty entrepreneur shared a footage from what appeared to be Kylie’s early morning walk with her infant strapped to her chest on Instagram Story.

She added a butterfly emoticon and the words “Morning” next to the black-and-white video.

The Kardashians star, who also shares 4-year-old daughter Stormi Webster with the rapper, has managed to keep her son out of the spotlight.

However, in July, the makeup mogul offered a quick look at her baby without showing his face while promoting the Kylie Baby’s Soothing Balm.

She shared a video of herself and the then-5-month-old baby, only showing the baby’s adorable legs and feet as she applied the new product on her son’s skin

Pakistani PM: Willing to play “constructive role” in resolving US-China problems

NEW YORK:As US-China relations grow increasingly tense over Taiwan, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif says Pakistan will be “happy” to play a positive role to bridge their differences in the interest of peace and stability in the world, if the two parties so desire.

“If China and the US so desire, Pakistan would be happy to play a positive role to bridge their differences, as we had done in the past,” he said in response to a question during a wide-ranging interview with Newsweek, while referring to Islamabad’s pivotal role in bringing the two countries together half a century ago for talks that served as the foundation for their modern relationship.

Newsweek Senior’s Foreign Policy Writer Tom O’Connor, who conducted the interview via e-mail, pointed out that the Pakistani leader spoke about the need for greater international cooperation, the role Pakistan could play in preventing the world from sliding into an ever deeper set of crises, and other key issues.

PM Sharif not only expressed his views on the stark deterioration of relations between the United States and China, but also on his stance about Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine.

Closer to home, Sharif discussed the turmoil plaguing neighbouring Afghanistan, the unresolved Kashmir dispute, and an uptick in militant attacks within Pakistan’s own borders that threatens its own national security at a time of domestic political challenges.

Sharif took office in April in the wake of a no-confidence vote that ousted prime minister Imran Khan, correspondent O’Connor noted, marking a return to power for the Pakistan Muslim League-N.

“The present government is truly national in nature,” Sharif said, referring to the coming together of the country’s all political force on an agreed-upon national agenda of economic reform and stabilization.

In the interview, he said Pakistan has traditionally maintained good relations with China and the United States, pointing out that historically, it was Pakistan that acted as a bridge in opening up the relationship between the two countries.

Pakistan continues to highlight the need for avoidance of a confrontational approach, he said, adding that bloc politics and any drift towards cold war will not produce any positive results, and in fact would be counterproductive for growth and stability.

“Pakistan strongly believes that inter-state relations should be based on mutual respect and peaceful resolution of disputes by upholding the principles of the UN charter and international law.”

The prime minister said that polarization would have serious consequences for the global economy afflicted by the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukraine crisis. The developing countries, like Pakistan, are already suffering from external shocks to their socioeconomic well-being, and do not desire aggravation of these challenges induced by major power rivalry.

Replying to a question, he said Pakistan desires to build a broad-based and sustainable partnership with the United States on the basis of mutual respect and mutual benefit.

“We encourage major US companies to invest in Pakistan’s lucrative market and enhance commercial ties, particularly in its growing IT sector,” PM Sharif said.” There is a strong Pakistani Diaspora in the US that is acting as a bridge to deepen the ties between our two countries and the people.

On the Ukraine conflict, he called for a diplomatic solution in accordance with relevant multilateral agreements, international law, and the provisions of the UN Charter.

On tensions with India, the prime minister said Pakistan desires good relations with all neighbours, but New Delhi’s India’s illegal and unilateral actions of August 5, 2019 in IIOJK [Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir] were a huge setback to Islamabad’s efforts to build regional peace.

Pakistan, he said, has always been ready to promote peace in the region on the basis of mutual respect and sovereign equality, emphasizing  that the core issue between India and Pakistan is the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, the resolution of which will open new vistas of cooperation.

On the deteriorating economic and humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, the prime minister said, “Our message to the international community would be to remain engaged, continue to assist the Interim Government in key social and economic areas, and unfreeze Afghanistan’s financial assets to help build a sustainable economy.

“We will continue to impress upon the Interim Afghan Government the importance of taking demonstrable actions on its commitments including those relating to inclusivity, respect for human rights of all Afghans, including girls’ education, and effective counter-terrorism action.”

Responding to a question, PM Sharif said Pakistan is determined to root out terrorism. At the same time, he said, “It is also no secret that Pakistan has been one of the biggest victims of state-sponsored terrorism that is planned, supported and financed by hostile intelligence agencies.

“The main objective of these terrorist acts is to destabilize Pakistan and undermine our economic development”.

Here is the transcript of the interview:

Newsweek: Transitions of power are always difficult, as the United States itself experienced just last year. Former prime minister Imran Khan’s departure was acrimonious and divisive for Pakistan. What is your plan to bring your nation together, to unite behind your leadership and look toward the future?

PM: What we need to understand first of all is the fact that the change of the government took place through a constitutional process. All political forces of the country minus Imran Khan’s PTI [Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf] came together to form this vastly representative government to take on the most urgent issues facing the people.

In terms of the vote cast in the previous General Elections of 2018, the political parties that are part of the coalition government represent 70 percent of the electorate. The present government is truly national in nature.

The coalition government is working on an agreed-upon national agenda of economic reform and stabilization. It is the topmost priority at the moment. We are also focusing on making governance efficient and service-oriented, besides improving Pakistan’s relations with friendly countries on the basis of our mutual interests.

The national agenda I mentioned has broad-based support because people understand the criticality of the issues that need to be dealt with.

Newsweek: Pakistan has long called for improving relations between Islamabad and Washington, yet there have been a number of negative developments on this front in recent years. How do you view the importance of this relationship, in what direction is it headed, and what challenges remain?

PM: Pakistan and the US have a longstanding relationship encompassing diverse areas of common interest. It is our endeavor to build a broad-based and sustainable partnership on the basis of mutual respect and mutual benefit.

The Foreign Minister (Bilawal Bhutto Zardari) met with Secretary of State Antony Blinken in New York and has had two telephone conversations with him.

This year we are celebrating 75 years of establishment of diplomatic ties between the US and Pakistan.

We have instituted dialogues in the areas of health, energy, climate, investment and trade. These dialogues are playing an important role in strengthening our bilateral ties. Most recently, we held the health dialogue with the US, which will help facilitate more bilateral cooperation in the health sector. We also hope for the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) Ministerial level meeting this year.

We have had high-level visits from the US to explore bilateral trade and commercial ties. Some of the US companies are doing extremely well in Pakistan, and there are growing trade and commercial ties between the two counties, with a lot more potential to achieve.

We encourage major US companies to invest in Pakistan’s lucrative market and enhance commercial ties, particularly in its growing IT sector. There is a strong Pakistani Diaspora in the US that is acting as a bridge to deepen the ties between our two countries and the people.

The government remains committed to maintaining constructive and sustained engagement with the US with a view to further strengthening and diversifying our relationship for the benefit of our two countries.

Newsweek: Pakistan has traditionally enjoyed a close relationship with China, but today heightened friction between China and the United States is having global repercussions. Are you concerned about the ability of these two countries to manage their relations peacefully, and what a potential worsening in their tensions, or even a clash, could mean for Pakistan and the rest of the world, especially if nations were asked to choose sides?

PM: While the Pakistan-China relationship is very special, Pakistan and the US have also maintained a longstanding historic bilateral relationship which covers all issues of mutual interest.

We believe that constructive engagement with all countries can promote peace and security as well as development and connectivity in the whole region. We look forward to remaining engaged with the international community for peace and stability in the region and beyond.

Conflict or crisis anywhere in the world has negative consequences for global peace, security and economy; particularly for the developing countries.

The world can ill-afford descent into another era of Cold War or bloc politics. I believe polarization would have serious consequences for the global economy afflicted by the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukraine crisis. The developing countries, like Pakistan, are already suffering from external shocks to their socioeconomic well-being, and do not desire aggravation of these challenges induced by major power rivalry.

It is our considered view that cooperation, not confrontation, should be the main driver of international relations. Ways should be found to address concerns through mutual understanding, mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win solutions.

Newsweek: Pakistan played a pivotal role in bringing China and the United States together half a century ago for talks that served as the foundation for their modern relationship. Can Pakistan play a similar role as it did in the past in de-escalating tensions between these two powers?

PM: Pakistan’s foreign policy is one of friendliness and goodwill towards all the nations of the world. Pakistan has traditionally maintained good relations with China and the United States. Historically, it was Pakistan that acted as a bridge in opening up the relationship between the United States and the Peoples’ Republic of China.

Pakistan continues to highlight the need for avoidance of a confrontational approach. Bloc politics and any drift towards cold war will not produce any positive results, and in fact would be counterproductive for growth and stability.

Pakistan strongly believes that inter-state relations should be based on mutual respect and peaceful resolution of disputes by upholding the principles of the UN charter and international law.

If China and the US so desire, Pakistan would be happy to play a positive role to bridge their differences, as we had done in the past.

Newsweek: The current war in Ukraine is putting severe strain on the international order. Has this conflict changed Pakistan’s perception of Russia and the West? How do you envision the future of this conflict?

PM: From the outset, Pakistan has been emphasizing a diplomatic solution to the Ukraine conflict in accordance with relevant multilateral agreements, international law, and the provisions of the UN Charter. Pakistan believes in an international order based on the fundamental principles of the UN Charter: self-determination of peoples, non-use or threat of use of force, respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity of States, and pacific settlement of disputes. It cannot be emphasized enough that settlement of any conflict can only be arrived at through diplomacy and dialogue.

Pakistan is committed to having friendly relations with all major powers of the world, including Russia.

Newsweek: It’s been exactly one year since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, and the nation continues to suffer from a range of issues in realms such as economics, security and human rights. As a neighbouring country that has a unique relationship with the Taliban, how does Pakistan evaluate the leadership of the Islamic Emirate, and what can Pakistan and the international community can do to continue supporting the Afghan people, who are suffering greatly, when the winter season will soon be upon us?

PM: If we review what has happened in the one year since August 15, 2021, the initial priorities for the international community were avoidance of protracted conflict, ensuring safe evacuation of personnel of international organizations, regulating the flow of migrants, and ensuring timely and effective humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people, especially in the wake of the last winter season.

Despite initial fears, these matters were handled in a relatively satisfactory manner through continuous and practical engagement of the international community, the neighbours of Afghanistan and efforts of the Interim Afghan Government.

In view of the continued precarious and humanitarian and economic situation, our message to the international community would be to remain engaged, continue to assist the Interim Government in key social and economic areas, and unfreeze Afghanistan’s financial assets to help build a sustainable economy. These are the international community’s expectations as well. We will continue to impress upon the Interim Afghan Government the importance of taking demonstrable actions on its commitments including those relating to inclusivity, respect for human rights of all Afghans, including girls’ education, and effective counter-terrorism action.

Newsweek: Elsewhere on Pakistan’s frontiers, the conflict over Kashmir continues, and relations with India have suffered greatly in recent years. What are your plans to improve this dynamic, and is India’s growing rapprochement with the United States and the Quad coalition of concern to you?

PM:  Pakistan desires good relations with all neighbours’ including India. India’s illegal and unilateral actions of August 5, 2019 in IIOJK [Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir] were a huge setback to our efforts to build regional peace. While India is perpetuating its brutal military occupation of the valley through draconian laws, partisan judiciary and strong-arm tactics, including flagrant use of brute force and attempts to illegally change the demographic structure of the occupied territory, it is also bent on disrupting the stability in the region through its hegemonic ambitions.

Pakistan has always been ready to promote peace in the region on the basis of mutual respect and sovereign equality. We have maintained that the core issue between India and Pakistan is the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, the resolution of which will open new vistas of cooperation.

Pakistan supports building of an equitable, open and inclusive Asia-Pacific community in the spirit to promote peace, stability and prosperity. Furthermore, we believe that creation of blocs in Asia-Pacific will only incite divisions and confrontations, exacerbate the arms race and lead to instability in the region and beyond.

Newsweek: Pakistan also continues to suffer from militant activity, including Baloch separatist attacks that have occasionally targeted Chinese citizens. What do you believe is behind this escalation, and how do you plan to counter it?

PM: We strongly condemn terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. In the past two decades, Pakistan has suffered tremendous losses in men and material due to its frontline role in the global fight against terrorism.

It is also no secret that Pakistan has been one of the biggest victims of state-sponsored terrorism that is planned, supported and financed by hostile intelligence agencies. The main objective of these terrorist acts is to destabilize Pakistan and undermine our economic development. Capturing of an active duty spy, Kulbhushan Jadhav, from Balochistan, and his subsequent confessions, clearly indicate that a foreign hand is involved in spreading terrorism in Pakistan.

Pakistan’s security forces have achieved remarkable success against terrorism. However, we remain a victim of terrorism planned and financed from across our borders, as exemplified by the recent attacks.

The terrorist attacks against Chinese citizens in Pakistan are aided and abetted by forces inimical to the Pakistan-China strategic partnership. Such forces do not wish to see development and prosperity in parts of Pakistan, including in Balochistan.

The Government of Pakistan is committed to root out terrorism. Internally, our law enforcement agencies are working closely with the security and intelligence agencies to carry out effective counter-terrorism operations. Investigations continue into recent terrorist attacks, and we are determined to give exemplary punishment to perpetrators and defeat their nefarious designs. We have also taken measures for enhanced safety and security of Chinese personnel, projects and institutions in Pakistan.

Newsweek:  In the political sphere, there have also been heightened tensions inside Pakistan with your predecessor, former prime minister Imran Khan, who is looking to make a political comeback. To-date, no Pakistani premier has ever completed a full term in office. How do you plan to break that string, and bring stability to the top position in your country?

PM: It is important to understand that we are a young democracy. We need time to evolve and mature as a democratic polity. The political evolution always comes with a cost.

Honestly speaking, for democracy to function effectively, the political parties that come to power will have to improve their delivery. A political system can only be strengthened and strike deep roots when it is owned by the people at large, which in turn is possible through efficient public service delivery. Performance in office alone can provide longevity to the public office holders.

There is also a need for the political parties to agree to the minimum rules of the game in which the welfare of the people remains paramount. The systematic problems can be fixed through engagement and consultations among all political stakeholders. This course may take time, but is the only way forward for the system to become strong, resilient and efficient.

Strong, stable economy vital to ensure social protection of masses: Shazia Marri

By Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety Shazia Marri has said a strong and stable economy is vital to ensure social protection of the people. She demanded corrective actions to stabilise the economy in order to meet the basic requirements of the populace while speaking at an economic conference on Tuesday in Islamabad. A healthy economy, according to her, is a source of strength for any country. She claimed that the lives of the poor are badly impacted by a weakening economy.

The federal minister said that despite several interventions in the political system of Pakistan and the war against terrorism and extremism, we as a nation were strong enough to stand for our country and put it on the path of progress and stability. Shazia Marri quoted one of the well-known proverbs, adding, “Strong economy is a wellspring of national strength.” She asserted that “economic is the beginning and the end of everything” and that “you cannot make any reform without having a strong economy.”

We are members of the world community, she declared. In terrible moments like disasters or calamities, our worldwide friends have always offered assistance to us, and I am extremely delighted to convey my gratitude for them. Shazia Marri gave an overview of her ministry and stated that it is making serious efforts to raise the socioeconomic standing of the underprivileged. The living standards of the country’s poorer sectors are eventually the most impacted by all the shocks the economy must endure.

Mentioning the alarming indicators faced by the country, the minister said that Pakistan is ranked among 43 countries which are most exposed to poverty while 54 percent of its population is vulnerable to poverty due to health shocks.

She mentioned that around 52 million people in the country are living below poverty line while 30 percent of the households experience food insecurity so the whole state of economy impact the population of the country as well as poverty ratio.

The minister went on to explain that Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto was the creator of the Benazir Income Support Program, which was launched in 2008. The initiative offers the eight million families financial assistance as well as other services. The main need of this programme is to register the female household member in order to extend the benefits. Since the nation inherited a destabilised economy from the previous administration and had a 38.2 billion dollar trade deficit when it took office, she claimed, we must take the proper steps to guarantee economic stability and ensure that the poor people are able to escape poverty.

According to an IMF research, Pakistan’s GDP might rise by close to 33 percent if women’s labour force participation were to be on level with men’s. Shazia Marri noted this. She cited an ILO research when she claimed that Pakistan’s GDP might rise by up to 9% if the gender gap in female labour force participation and employment was reduced by 25%. The federal minister stressed the necessity of providing incentives for the agricultural industry to improve productivity.

Study: A full-scale nuclear war could result in 5 billion deaths

image 210

Five billion people will die in a modern nuclear conflict, but the effects of worldwide famine brought on by pollution that blocks sunlight are likely to be much worse than the harm caused by the explosions.

Scientists from Rutgers University illustrated the effects of six possible nuclear conflict scenarios. In the worst-case scenario, when the United States and Russia engaged in a full-scale war, more than half of humanity would perish.

The calculations were based on projections of the amount of soot that would be released into the atmosphere as a result of explosions and conflagrations brought on by nuclear bombs. The National Center for Atmospheric Research-endorsed climate forecasting tool was utilised by researchers to assess agricultural yields on a country-by-country basis.

Elon Musk approaches China

image 208

Elon Musk

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla Inc., has written a piece for the official journal of China’s Cyberspace Administration, a powerful organisation that manages information security for businesses like Tencent and Alibaba and works with other governmental agencies to censor internet content.

In the July issue of the official magazine of the CAC, the billionaire joined local business leaders like Ant Group Co. Chairman Eric Jing in outlining a recognisable vision for how technology can secure humanity’s future and shared his views on responsible technological advancement that promotes diversity and inclusion.

These opinions are in line with the administration of President Xi Jinping, who has been working for more than a year to curtail the influence of internet titans like Tencent Holdings Ltd. and Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.

The crackdown, which cost the market more than $1 trillion in value, started in 2020 when regulators blocked Ant’s record IPO and peaked around the time Didi Global Inc. delisted. The CAC was the driving force behind this operation.
