PTI sees "change in Pakistan" after winning the Punjab by-elections

PTI sees “change in Pakistan” after winning the Punjab by-elections

After the PTI gained a significant advantage in the Punjab by-elections, which will determine who controls the nation’s largest province, a charged PTI claimed Sunday that “change in Pakistan” had occurred.

Hammad Azhar

In a speech to party members in Lahore, PTI leader Hammad Azhar declared: “Soon, Pakistan will witness a change […] Hamza Shahbaz’s fake government has ceased to exist.”

In nine constituencies (PP-217, PP-288, PP-282, PP-83, PP-158, PP-202, PP-224, PP-167, and PP-170), the PTI has won, and it is in the lead in a number of others. On the other hand, according to unofficial results, the PML-N has so far only been successful in winning one constituency (PP-168).

Asad Umar, the secretary-general of the PTI, claimed that all pre-election polls indicated that his party would win the by-elections held today.

PTI Victory

PTI

“At least 16 seats will be won by PTI. This victory belongs to the entire country, not to PTI “According to the former planning, development, and special initiatives minister.

The former federal minister emphasised that the election results would alter Pakistan’s politics and that people would not allow anyone to decide their fate in secret.

In reference to the date that the elections for Punjab’s top office will take place in accordance with Supreme Court orders, “Pervez Elahi will become the chief minister on July 22,” Umar said.

Plans of Khan

Imran Khan, the chairman of the PTI, may not give a speech today, according to Umar, as he will first call a meeting of the core committee of the party’s leadership for tomorrow to determine the next steps.

Imran Khan told party members to be on guard until the final results were announced, explaining that he “does not prefer coming to the fore when he secures a victory.”

Shehbaz Sharif is now Islamabad’s premier, according to Umar, who also emphasized that early general elections are the only way for Pakistan to move forward at this time.

PML-N

The PML-N conceded defeat in the crucial Punjab by-elections on Sunday after the PTI gained a majority of the 20 open seats in the provincial assembly.

Vice President of the PML-N Maryam Nawaz tweeted that the loss should be accepted with an open heart as the unofficial results began to come in, showing the PTI in the lead.

image 355

Maryam wrote, “The PML-N should accept the by-poll results with an open heart and concede to the masses’ decision.

She continued by saying that since winning and losing were inevitable in politics, the party should now concentrate on identifying and overcoming its weaknesses.

She said, “God willing, everything will be fine.”

In a similar vein, senior PML-N leader Malik Mohammad Ahmed Khan acknowledged in a News interview that PTI had won the fiercely contested Punjab by-elections by a “landslide.”

The party “wholly accepts the opinion of the public” and I accept that PTI has won, he declared.

Everyone is welcome to debate how and what occurred, he continued, but “apparently the situation at hand indicates that PTI has won the elections; as a result, we congratulate them and accept our defeat.”

‘Snap-elections’

image 356

When asked about the PML-plans N’s for the July 22 election to choose the new Chief Minister of Punjab, Khan responded: “I spoke to Hamza Shahbaz and he was of the view that people have expressed their choice, so we need to acknowledge it.

He added that he viewed these by-polls as snap elections, saying, “Last time the situation was different as there were divisions within the party, but this time, it is all about the public and now we will assess where we went wrong.”

He lamented that the party had lost three significant seats in Lahore and claimed that there was no longer any justification for the party to continue its electioneering efforts.

“Tough situation”

“We [the PML-N] are in a difficult position as we have lost elections in Punjab, where we have always had a stronghold, and our government in the federal level is a coalition setup with thin numbers,” he insisted.

Khan continued by saying that when political parties take the public’s opinion into account, power is subordinated to the will of the people.

In response to a query about the likelihood of early elections, he acknowledged that the results showed the PML-N had lost its hold on Punjab, but he refrained from commenting on the federal government because decisions are made after consultations with all coalition parties.

He declared that the PTI would now unavoidably form the Punjabi government and advised all political parties to fortify their positions.

According to the MP, the party intends to enter the subsequent elections with a coordinated strategy, citing the enlistment of PTI dissidents as one of the primary causes of our defeat.

I’d like to congratulate PTI.

image 357

Rana Sanaullah, the interior minister, congratulated the PTI on its victory and claimed that the government had ensured an open election on Twitter.

Alhamdulillah, no allegations of rigging or improper use of authority by the Punjabi government were made.

https://twitter.com/KhawajaMAsif?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1548722989104910336%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.geo.tv%2Flatest%2F428192-pml-n-concedes-defeat-in-crucial-punjab-by-elections

Added the minister: “We have protected the integrity of public opinion today. The PLMN and PTI did not hold these seats in the 2018 elections either; instead, independent candidates were chosen.”

Southwest Europe is experiencing intense forest fires

image 352

MADRID: On Sunday, firefighters battled to put out wildfires raging throughout southwest Europe as the heatwave continued unabated, with Britain on track to break temperature records this coming week.

Since last week, fires burning in France, Greece, Portugal, and Spain have devastated thousands of hectares of land, driven dozens from their homes, and killed a number of first responders. Parts of southwest Europe are experiencing their second heatwave in recent weeks. Scientists attribute the increased frequency and severity of extreme weather events like heatwaves and drought to climate change.

Firefighters in the Gironde area of southwest France are battling to contain two forest fires that have burned through about 11,000 hectares (27,000 acres) of land since Tuesday.More than 14,000 people, including locals and visitors, have had to leave their campsites due to the wildfires.

To accommodate evacuees, seven emergency shelters have been established. In some areas of southern France, Meteo France predicted temperatures as high as 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) on Sunday, with fresh heat records anticipated on Monday. “The temperature is rising. The nation is currently experiencing a heatwave “said the weather office.

India reached 2 billion COVID immunizations, while new cases are at a four-month high

image 348

NEW DELHI: As daily infections reached a four-month high, the Indian government’s COVID-19 immunisation programme reached 2 billion doses on Sunday. Booster doses are currently being administered to all individuals. The world’s largest and longest-running immunisation programme, which started last year, was celebrated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he praised the vaccination milestone.

Modi declared in a tweet, “India makes history once more.” The opposition has accused the prime minister of mishandling the outbreak, which experts claim killed millions of people. The claims are denied by the government.

According to data from the health ministry, 49 deaths were reported overnight, bringing the COVID death toll to 525,709.Over the previous 24 hours, there have been 20,528 more new instances than there were on February 20. The majority of COVID-related limitations have been eliminated in the 1.35 billion person nation, and global travel has made a strong comeback.

Covishield, a domestically produced vaccine by AstraZeneca (AZN.L), made up about 80% of the immunizations. Others include the Sputnik V satellite from Russia and the locally produced Covaxin and Corbevax. In order to stop the spread of illnesses, the federal government has stepped up its booster campaign, increasing its efforts in the eastern states of Assam, West Bengal, and Karnataka in the south.

Punjab battle royale: Vote counting begins as voting concludes in significant by-elections

Punjab

Following the implementation of Section 144 on Sunday to restore law and order in the province, voting for the crucial by-elections for the 20 constituencies of the Punjab Assembly ended at 5 p.m. in most districts.

image 341

However, the chief election commissioner (CEC) has allowed “all voters present on the premises of polling stations to cast their votes even after 5pm” because there are approximately 4.58 million voters eligible to exercise their right to vote in the by-elections.

In these 20 constituencies, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) set up 3,131 polling places, of which 676 have been designated as highly sensitive and 1,194 as sensitive.

“Attack on Fawad Chaudhry’s vehicle”

According to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, during the Lahore by-election, police and the local government encouraged an attack on the vehicle of the former information minister Fawad Chaudhry.

image 342

A miscreant attacked Fawad’s vehicle while he and former finance minister Shaukat Tareen were visiting polling places in PP-168 to observe the voting process, according to PTI Central Punjab Information Secretary Musarat Jamshed. The miscreant was later apprehended from the Tehreek-e-Labbaik (TLP) Pakistan camp.

She claimed that police had acted as a bystander and had shielded the attackers who shattered Fawad’s car’s windshields. Nevertheless, she continued, the PTI leader was secure throughout the assault.

Jamshed emphasised that it is concerning that the PTI’s central leader was attacked in the midst of a significant police presence.

In PP-272, police show up to “arrest” Gill.

PP-272 in Muzaffargarh received a large police presence, ostensibly to apprehend PTI leader Shahbaz Gill. The veteran of the party stated in a tweet: “I don’t fear getting arrested. Soldiers for Imran Khan are not frightened of such strategies. I’m willing to be arrested because we are not here to commit acts of terrorism.”

image 343

Imran Khan, the chairman of the PTI, and senior leader Shireen Mazari have vehemently denounced the arrest and called it a “fascist act.”

Disputes occur

As the polling process continues, some unpleasant incidents have also been reported. The Election Commission Control Room received six complaints about fights involving voters and political staff, three of which were immediately resolved, according to the commission’s spokesperson, who added that “authorities are taking steps to control the situation.”

In a statement, CEC Sikander Sultan Raja threatened “strict action” against anyone “involved in creating issues in the election process” and warned that candidates who engage in such behaviour “may also be disqualified.”

Political workers reportedly started fighting at the Panjar voting location in Rawalpindi.

Punjab government

Attaullah Tarar, the Punjab government’s spokesperson and home minister, has also taken note of the conflict that erupted in PP-158 Lahore. He claimed that while he was ordering the arrest of the PTI leaders, Jamshed Iqbal Cheema and Saeed Mahis severely injured a member of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

Rana Naeem, a PTI employee, was also detained by the police after he injured a PML-N employee’s head at an irrigation canal polling place.

At the UC Dharmapura polling place in the same constituency, a brawl broke out between PTI and PML-N employees. As he explained why the brawl started, the PTI polling agent accused the police of being biassed and claimed that “the police is allowing PML-N workers to enter, while I am being stopped despite the fact that I am a polling agent.”

Changes to the voting area drew complaints from voters in the same constituency. Residents of Nai Abadi Garhi Shahu, Saqleen and Yasir Mehmood, declared, “I am a PTI supporter, and our vote has been changed. Our vote was moved to the Shalimar PP-148 area, which does not have voting facilities. Additionally, he claimed that all PTI voters in PP-158 had their votes transferred to PP-148.

Following protests between PTI and PML-N employees, voting was also suspended in PP-168 for a while.

Malik Nawaz Awan, a candidate for the PTI, also went to the polling place as reports of people being stopped from voting at polling place 60 spread.

In front of the Basti Syedan Shah polling place in Lahore, an armed man named Abdul Rehman has also been detained. A mini-rifle was found on the accused, who is reportedly a private guard for a local man named Dr Maarif.

PTI and PML-N blame-game

image 344

The PTI is allegedly trying to “stop voting by inciting violence, sowing fear, and firing,” according to Khawaja Saad Rafique. The PML-N leader asserted in a tweet that “PTI’s armed goons” were “arrested along with ammunition” in Lahore today.

https://twitter.com/KhSaad_Rafique?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1548569242206777345%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Ftribune.com.pk%2Fstory%2F2366272%2Fbattle-royale-in-punjab-vote-count-underway-as-balloting-ends-in-crucial-by-polls

image 345

Shahbaz Gill, a senior PTI leader, has claimed that there are ongoing attempts to rig the election because “police clearly acts as a PML-N wing.”

Additionally, he shared a video of the incident and stated that the councillor from the PTI camp had been “threatened and then arrested.”

He claimed that the ECP was complacent in the attempts to rig the election in a subsequent tweet, claiming that “four million voters were [falsely] recorded dead [and] the names from voter lists were added to other constituencies.”

“If there is a name [on the list], it is not allowed to vote,” he continued, accusing the electoral watchdog of tampering with voter lists.

The ECP refuted the claims made by the PTI leader and stated that the “CEC has issued clear directives to Chief Secretary Punjab and IG Punjab that no retaliatory action should be taken against any civilians or ordinary persons otherwise the ECP will take strict action.”

Additionally, he had commanded that “all practicable measures be taken to ensure transparent voting in Punjab.”

https://twitter.com/ECP_Pakistan?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1548561002232365057%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Ftribune.com.pk%2Fstory%2F2366272%2Fbattle-royale-in-punjab-vote-count-underway-as-balloting-ends-in-crucial-by-polls

It is significant to remember that the PTI had previously expressed concerns about voting list changes, and the ECP had referred to those claims as nothing more than “propaganda” meant to mislead the electorate.

image 346

In a statement, a representative for the electoral watchdog added that the by-elections were being held in accordance with the prior lists.

After PTI leaders and former federal ministers Asad Umar and Fawad Chaudhry announced in several press conferences that they would challenge the pre-poll rigging in the by-elections by adding unidentified voters to the lists, the ECP issued the statement.

Media are not permitted to record footage in PP-7

The moderators forbade the media from reporting on theThe Government Secondary School Matore in Kahuta’s presiding officer told the media that “orders from above” prevented the media from entering the stations, but he added that “Rawalpindi media representatives can come without their cameras.”

Additionally, he stated that "police will be called if media personnel attempt to record footage of the polling place."

Twittering for the win

On his official Twitter account earlier today, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reminded voters of “the corruption, incompetence, economic destruction, facilitation and patronage of the mafia and the destruction created in the name of change during the 4 years of the dark era of Imran Niazi government.”

In a celebratory tone, the senior PTI leader, Fawad Chaudhry urged voters “not to wait” and “come out and vote”.

https://twitter.com/fawadchaudhry?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1548542078036201474%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Ftribune.com.pk%2Fstory%2F2366272%2Fbattle-royale-in-punjab-vote-count-underway-as-balloting-ends-in-crucial-by-polls

Miftah Ismail, the leader of the PML-N and the current finance minister, urged Punjab to support the PTI “if you are satisfied with the performance of the Buzdar government.

Imran Khan, a former prime minister and leader of the party, also posted a message on his official Twitter account urging “all those, especially our women, who have yet to cast their votes to do so as this is an election for Pakistan’s sovereignty & Haqeeqi Azadi.”

https://twitter.com/ImranKhanPTI?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1548588717862014977%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Ftribune.com.pk%2Fstory%2F2366272%2Fbattle-royale-in-punjab-vote-count-underway-as-balloting-ends-in-crucial-by-polls

CEC will “immediately act”

In addition to directing law enforcement agencies to “not allow any violations of the law or violent incidents,” the chief election commissioner (CEC) urged voters to “vote for their favourite candidates today” in order to “not only strengthen democracy but also bless Pakistan with stability.”

Should any violations occur, the CEC instructed law enforcement to “take immediate and strict action without discrimination.” He also gave instructions to “register the case with the commission immediately if an incident occurs where the election commission is the competent authority.”

More police officers were reportedly called in to maintain order in the constituency after reports of a dispute between political workers in Rawalpindi.

PTI and PML-N

image 347

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) engaged in contentious campaigning for the 20 seats of the Punjab Assembly ahead of the elections, so the results of the by-elections could serve as a bellwether for Pakistan’s upcoming general elections.

These seats became vacant after the ECP disqualified PTI rebel lawmakers in response to a petition filed by the late prime minister Imran Khan.

It is important to remember that PTI dissidents were responsible for the province’s change of government, which is now led by Hamza Shehbaz.

Even though the polls appear to be too close to call, the PML-N appears to have more favourable odds than the PTI, despite finding a wider echo for its message.

The secret number

In the Punjab Assembly, the PTI currently holds 163 seats on paper. The number of these drops to 162 because Deputy Speaker Muhammad Dost Muhammad Mazari is very unlikely to support the party.

Its total strength is 172 when 10 seats held by the PML-Q in the province are added (minus one).

It’s interesting to note that the PML-Q is a federal government ally of the PML-led administration.

There are 175 votes total for the PML-N. Following the resignations of MPAs Faisal Khan Niazi and Mian Jaleel Ahmed Sharaqpuri just hours before the election, the party lost two seats. Without him, the PML-N would have possessed 177 seats. The previous number game has been changed by the circumstance.

Test of Imran’s popularity

The results of the election will be a gauge of Imran Khan’s popularity as the leader of the PTI and the deposed prime minister.

Analysts had earlier remarked that the PTI chairman would be able to evaluate the success of his campaign for public support through the results of the election.

Political commentator Hasan Askari stated that if he wins, “he will claim that “people are with me” and increase pressure for new elections.”

Khan “will definitely call it a rigged election” if he loses, he continued.

Since being removed from office, the former premier has attracted large crowds to rallies all over the nation by making protracted speeches in which he asserts that the coalition government was imposed on the nation by a US-led plot.

unique monitoring station

To ensure law and order during the by-elections, a special election monitoring cell has been established at the Ministry of Interior.

The cell was set up on Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah’s express instruction to improve communication between law enforcement agencies and to enable quick action in the event of an unfavourable incident during the election.

.

The control centres of the provincial governments and the federal law enforcement organisations are connected to the monitoring cell. The cell will continuously keep an eye on the state of law and order in the electoral districts.

The cell will continue to operate from today until the conclusion of the by-elections, with communication from Punjab Rangers and Frontier Constabulary Headquarters as well.

rivalry between competitors

It might end up being a neck-and-neck competition between the two sides in terms of expected poll position.

Every constituency has a unique dynamic and set of issues because these constituencies range from urban to rural and from north to south Punjab. Out of the 20 constituencies, the seats in Lahore and one in Multan will be more obviously significant and hold more symbolic weight.

If even three of the four seats in Lahore, which the PML-N claims to be its stronghold, are won by the PTI in these by-elections, it will be a major setback for the opposition party.

Political experts predict that the PTI will easily win two seats.

Zain Qureshi, the son of PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi, is running against Muhammad Salman, a former PTI MPA who is now running on behalf of the PML-N in Multan.

Qureshi, a pillar of the PTI, places great value on this Multan seat.

PP-170, PP-168, PP-167, and PP-158 are the four constituencies in Lahore where by-elections are being held.

PP-167 (Lahore)

Shabbir Gujjar, a candidate for the PTI, is running in this district, while Nazir Ahmed Chohan, a disqualified PTI MPA, is running for the PML-N. On a PTI ticket, Chohan, who had joined the PTI about ten years prior, was elected as an MPA in 2018.

This district is covered by NA-133. The local MNA is Shaista Pervaiz Malik. Party popularity would decide the outcome of this seat rather than a contest between the candidates. There is also a sizable voter base for the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan in the region.

PP-158 (Lahore)

Mian Akram Usman of the PTI is running, while Rana Ahsan Sharafat of the PML-N is.

The party vote bank will determine the winner, just like in the previous constituency.

PP-168 (Lahore)

Malik Nawaz Awan of the PTI is running, while Malik Asad Ali Khokhar of the PML-N is an ineligible MPA.

Compared to his PTI opponent, Malik Asad, the PML-N candidate, appears to be in a much more secure position. Saad Rafique, an MNA for the PML-N, represents the NA-131 constituency, which includes the seat.

His intra-party rivalry with senior PML-N leader Afzal Khokhar is the only apparent drawback.

PP-170 (Lahore)

Amin Zulqarnain Chaudary, a PTI MPA who has been disqualified, has been given the ticket by the PML-N, whereas Zaheer Abbas Khokhar has been selected by the PTI.

PP-170 is a part of NA-134, which is represented by Rana Mubashir Iqbal of the PML-N.

PP-140 (Sheikhupura)

Mian Khalid Mehmood, a PTI dissident MPA, has been selected by the PML-N for this race, while Advocate Khurram Shehzad Virk is the candidate for the PTI.

PP-140 is a part of NA-121, which is represented by Javed Latif, an MNA for the PML-N.

The PTI has a better chance of winning the seat thanks to its large population of young voters and its substantial urban population.

According to Khalil Ur Rehman Qamar, “London Nahi Jaunga” responds to those who believe he is a misogynist.

image 335

Khalil Ur Rehman Qamar, a renowned screenwriter whose statements have frequently drawn criticism, has now claimed that his newest movie, London Nahi Jaunga, will alter “feminists’ perception” of him.

London Nahi Jaungi

The author of Meray Paas Tum Ho appeared on a local talk show where he was questioned regarding the messages contained in London Nahi Jaungi for the audience.

image 337

Speaking about how the movie questions society’s gender-based discrimination and explores women’s rights, Qamar claimed that the Mehwish Hayat and Humayun Saeed starrer is the perfect rebuttal to anyone who believes he is a misogynist.

“The movie has a strong message about women’s rights and raises issues about how society treats women unfairly. “Women have always been held in the highest regard by me, and I have made it a point to never let them bow to men, said Qamar.

Punjab Nahi Jaungi

A specific slap gate scene in his 2017 film Punjab Nahi Jaungi and the casual reinforcement of problematic male idols for the male audience both drew criticism.

Following his viral altercations with Marvi Sirmed and a call out by actor Mahira Khan, the host questioned whether Qamar’s assertion that London Nahi Jaunga advocates for women’s rights and their unfair treatment in society were an attempt to appease feminists.

image 338

Denying the allegations, Qamar stated that the movie was written seven months before his encounter with Marvi Sirmed and that it illustrates his way of thinking. He emphasized that there is no connection between the themes the movie explores and any viral news.

Misogynistic

After watching the movie, those who have accused me of being misogynistic will feel ashamed and have nowhere to hide, the author predicted.

Gohar Rasheed and Kubra Khan are also featured in the Nadeem Baig film. The romantic comedy, which debuted on Eidul Azha, is currently playing in theatres across Pakistan.

Babar Azam scores a century for Pakistan against Sri Lanka in the first Test match.

GALLE: On day two of the first Test against Sri Lanka, Pakistan was bowled out for 218 after captain Babar Azam scored a resolute 119.

Azam led the tourists to within four runs of Sri Lanka’s 222 as he and Naseem Shah, who scored five not out from 52 balls in Galle, put on a 70-run tenth-wicket stand.

babar azam

Prabath Jayasuriya, a left-arm spinner, claimed his third consecutive haul of five or more wickets to frighten the opposition batting, which fell to 85-7 before lunch and 148-9 in the second session.

With a four and a single-off mystery spinner Mahesh Theekshana, Azam reached his seventh Test century. The final Pakistan innings was ended by the star batsman being trapped lbw.

Yasir Shah (18), Hasan Ali (17), and Naseem, three batsmen in the lower order, contributed to Pakistan’s 133 runs for the final three wickets thanks to Azam.

He hit fast bowler Kasun Rajitha for three consecutive boundaries and later Theekshana and Jayasuriya for a six and a four.

After rallying from 133-8 on Saturday, when Pakistan’s left-arm quick Shaheen Shah Afridi claimed four wickets, Sri Lanka got a taste of their own medicine.

Pakistan resumed the day on 24 for two when play started 30 minutes late because of rain and Azhar Ali could only survive three balls before he was trapped lbw by Jayasuriya.

Salman Ali Agha, making his debut, was out leg before after only 15 balls after scoring five runs on another sliding delivery from Jayasuriya.

Before Yasir survived the hat-trick ball, Jayasuriya, 30, struck on consecutive deliveries to dismiss Mohammad Nawaz and Shaheen Shah Afridi.

The first Test will start at the Galle International Cricket Stadium, and the second game will be played at the Colombo stadium from July 24 through 28.

The team encountered trouble soon after arriving in the island nation last Thursday when one of the team’s player support staff members tested positive for COVID-19 and was ordered to spend five days in isolation.

But now that things have calmed down in Colombo, the players will proceed with their tour as planned.

People in Sri Lanka have been protesting the country’s worst economic crisis and calling for the president to step down because he is to blame.

After tens of thousands of protesters surrounded both men’s official residences on Monday, the prime minister’s office announced that Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had informed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe that he would be stepping down.

Crowds would continue to occupy the president’s and prime minister’s Colombo residences, according to protest movement leaders, until they resigned from their positions.

On Monday, hundreds of people strolled into the president’s secretariat and residence in Colombo, Sri Lanka’s capital city, and took tours of the colonial-era structures. No one was attempted to be stopped by police.

At the airport in Karachi, another Indian aircraft makes an emergency landing.

On Sunday, a Sharjah-to-Hyderabad flight experienced a technical problem and had to make an emergency landing at Karachi Jinnah’s International Airport.

At the time of this writing, the IndiGo aircraft is being inspected at the Karachi airport. “IndiGo flight 6E-1406, bound for Hyderabad from Sharjah, was diverted to Karachi.” The pilot noticed a problem with the equipment.

“Necessary procedures were followed, and the aircraft was diverted to Karachi out of caution. The airline announced in its official statement that an additional flight was being sent to Karachi to transport the passengers to Hyderabad.

Later, it was reported that an alternate Indian airline aircraft had arrived at the Karachi airport and was ready to transport passengers after they had completed the necessary formalities.

The fact that an Indian airline had to make an emergency landing at Karachi airport for the second time in two weeks should be noted.

SpiceJet’s Delhi-Dubai flight on July 5 was forced to make a detour to Karachi after the pilots discovered an unusual fuel reduction in one of the aircraft’s fuel tanks. An indicator light was discovered to be broken.

Civil Aviation Authority

image 328

The pilot of the IndiGo plane successfully landed the craft at 2:20 am, according to reliable sources within the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

The Airbus 320 aircraft reported a technical problem and is currently being investigated. Nearly 180 passengers were on board; they were safely moved to the transit lounge and given breakfast.

According to the sources, the passengers will take a different flight to Hyderabad Deccan, which is scheduled to land at 3pm.

They reported that the flight departed at 3:24 am and arrived in New Delhi, India, at 5:35 am. The sources claim that this aircraft, which has been in service for three years, made its debut in December of last year.

The CAA spokesperson stated that following the emergency landing at Karachi airport, the passengers of the stranded aircraft were given permission to stay in a lounge. After a 12-hour stay, they boarded another aircraft and took off for Dubai.

The unfit aircraft, however, spent 18 hours in Karachi getting fixed.

The Ukraine war dominated the G20 summit

image 322

DUA NUSA: In order to avoid catastrophic humanitarian consequences, G20 financial executives meeting in Bali must make headway addressing the global economic challenges brought on by Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Some Western ministers lambasted Russian representatives present at the meeting; US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen claimed that Russia’s “brutal and unfair conflict” was completely to blame for the current global economic crisis.

Recent G20 meetings, notably the gathering of foreign ministers last week, have been overshadowed by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which the Kremlin refers to as a “special military operation.” Sri Mulyani Indrawati.

We are well aware that failing to cooperate will cost us more than we can bear. Members of the G20 include Western nations who have sanctioned Russia and have accused it of committing war crimes in Ukraine, which Moscow denies, as well as other countries like South Africa, China, and India have made less robust responses.

“Good job, big guy! What you’ve accomplished in cricket is beyond what people can even fathom.. And they’re some of the best players to ever play the sport,” Pietersen commented in response to Kohli’s statement on Instagram.

Perspective, Kohli wrote in a post on Instagram. He was making reference to the phrase that read, “What If I fall? Oh, but what if you fly, my darling? Later, in a different article, Pietersen reminded Kohli that life goes far beyond the cricket bubble.”

‘Quick Response Force’ to be the Pakistan Army during the Punjab by-elections: ISPR

image 316

RAWALPINDI: In the event that a scenario involving law and order arises during the voting on July 17, only “Quick Reaction Force” tasks will be carried out by Pakistan Army personnel (tomorrow).

ISPR

In a statement released today, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) claimed that as third-tier responders to any law and order problem in the province, troops conducted reconnaissance at the most sensitive spots in their respective districts.

The Pakistan Election Commission’s instructions, according to the ISPR, were followed during conducting the reconnaissance (ECP).

The government has also opted to deploy Frontier Constabulary (FC) in addition to Rangers personnel in light of the political unrest leading up to the by-elections. Additionally, the government has decided to place a prohibition on the movement of any political party’s armed personnel within the electoral districts where the by-elections are being held.

In the meantime, Imran Khan, the leader of the PTI, has been warned by Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah not to sabotage tomorrow’s peaceful by-elections by instigating rioting or violence.
The minister tweeted, “The law will take its proper course if someone attempts to subvert the writ of the state by engaging in criminal conduct.”

Tomorrow will see a flurry of political activity in Punjab as 20 highly contested provincial constituencies have make-or-break by-elections that will determine the fate of Chief Minister Hamza Shehbaz.

Vertical “nap boxes” will be made available in Japan for overworked workers

image 314

Nap Boxes

Vertical “nap boxes” are being introduced to Japan by two companies, Itoki Corporation and Koyoju Gohan KK, in an effort to encourage a healthy workplace environment. The partnership began at a business mixer where plywood supplier Koyoju Gohan from Hokkaido and Tokyo-based furniture expert Itoki met.

The two parties inked a licence deal on Thursday, and Koyoju Gohan is currently creating the nap box. Both the price and the availability are pending. Japanese workers are accustomed to having excessively long workdays, and the nation even has a moniker for those who take daytime naps to get through long shifts or commutes. In the pod, the person using the nap box will lie upright like a flamingo.

The first plan made sure that the user’s head, knees, and back were all securely supported to prevent them from falling over. This new breakthrough may inspire Japanese workers to take quick power naps during the day because research suggests that restorative sleep increases productivity. Kawashima stated, “I think that many Japanese people labour continually without taking breaks. “We anticipate that this will be used by enterprises as a more flexible method of resting.”

The Pakistani agriculture sector has received $200 million from the World Bank

On Saturday, the World Bank‘s Board of Executive Directors approved a $200 million loan to help Pakistan’s agricultural industry.

The money will be used to transform the agricultural industry by implementing climate-smart technologies that will increase small farmers’ incomes, increase water use efficiency, and increase their resilience to extreme weather events.

image 310

Agriculture sector

Punjab’s agricultural sector, which produces 73 percent of all the food produced in Pakistan, is essential to the nation’s economy and food security.

Agriculture

The Punjab Resilient and Inclusive Agriculture Transformation Project (PRIAT) will boost agricultural output by providing small farms with equitable and effective access to water.

World bank

According to a statement released by the World Bank, “it will assist farmers at the community and household levels to adopt climate-smart farming practises and technologies that improve crop yields and conserve water resources in Punjab.”

Najy Benhassine, the Pakistan country director for the World Bank, stated: “In recent years, Pakistan’s agriculture sector has suffered from losses in crop yields and livestock, harm to irrigation infrastructure, and food shortages due to climate change, particularly severe droughts in the Punjab province.

The Punjab Agriculture Policy 2018 supports the massive expansion of water conservation efforts, improving sustainability and resilience in the face of climate change, and private sector involvement to help increase the productivity of the sector. This project is in line with that policy.

In order to help the Punjab government achieve economies of scale and transform the agricultural sector, the lender noted that PRIAT will assist farmers in implementing cutting-edge, climate-smart technologies.

To enhance water conservation practises and agricultural productivity, the project will work with the private sector to find suitable technologies and offer training specifically designed for water user associations and individual households.

According to Guo Li, the project’s task team leader, “the agriculture sector has a huge opportunity to both build climate resilience and improve economic conditions by generating access to domestic and international markets.”

Through market-oriented production activities that add value, boost competitiveness, and increase farmer incomes, PRIAT will aid in accelerating the government’s efforts to transform the agri-food system.

Multilateral creditors

Pakistan has made plans to obtain $9 to $10 billion in loans from other multilateral creditors, such as the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, and Islamic Development Bank during the current fiscal year after reaching a staff-level agreement with the IMF. These creditors include the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, and Islamic Development Bank.

image 312

A Letter of Comfort (LoC) from the IMF and the resumption of program/policy lending from the WB, ADB, and IDB will be made possible by the revival of the IMF programme.

After the second week of August 2022, the IMF’s Executive Board is anticipated to meet to discuss the release of the $1.17 billion tranche under the Extended Fund Facility and the combined approval of the seventh and eighth reviews (EFF).

The IMF did not mention any desired structural reforms for removing economic bottlenecks that ultimately led to the surfacing of twin deficits, known as the budget deficit and the current account deficit. Instead, the revival of the IMF programme depends solely on price increases.

The IMF blatantly ignored the rising inflation in its statement on the occasion of reaching a staff level agreement with Pakistani authorities, strengthening the impression that the Washington-based lender is completely oblivious to the suffering being experienced by middle-class salaried workers and pensioners who are suffering from inflation.

image 315

Since there is a total electricity billing of Rs1,600 billion, the flow of circular debt reaching Rs850 billion has sparked concern among policymakers. The accumulation of circular debt of Rs850 billion has shocked them and set off alarm bells.

In addition, the IMF statement confirmed that the government had allocated only a pittance—Rs68 billion to Rs72 billion—for the supply of Sasta Petrol and Sasta Diesel in the wake of rising inflationary pressures.

image 313

Miftah Ismail, the minister of finance, said on Thursday that the IMF’s executive board meeting would be held after the second week of August 2022 to approve Pakistan’s request for the release of the $1.17 billion tranche.

Miftah Ismail responded to another question about the resumption of programme loans from other multilateral creditors by saying that Pakistan was anticipating $9 billion as budgetary/project loans and that there would also be a separate amount from the IMF. Overall, there are signs that Islamabad will secure $10 billion in dollar loans from multilateral creditors during the current fiscal year 2022–2023.

Snake, a classic game from Nokia, turns 25

image 308

Before there were games like “Candy Crush,” there was the legendary “Snake” game for Nokia, which kept users captivated to their phones. When the game was brought to the Nokia 6110 in 1997, it immediately became well-known all over the world.

The objective of the game, which was to control an uncontrollable snake that had to collect up food, was rather straightforward. The serpent continued to expand as it consumed the food. The player has to watch out for the snake’s tail touching any objects in order to win and earn a high score. Mobile phones became more than just call and texting devices thanks to the game.

William Cox

The frustration that followed a loss, according to video game creator William Cox, is what made the game addictive. He stated that it becomes compulsive to beat high scores. He mentioned how he spent so much time playing the Snake game that he was eventually able to beat it and fill the screen with the snake’s body.

He continued, “It is iconic and a part of the history of the gaming business.” It eventually overtook Tetris as the most played single-player game and even managed to fit onto 48 × 84 black-and-white pixels.

Shaheen Afridi took four wickets for Pakistan on the first day of the first Test, but Sri Lanka fought back

image 307

On the first day of the first Test on Saturday, Shaheen Shah Afridi led an effective attack to dismiss Sri Lanka for 222, but the home team fought back with two wickets taken before the end of play.

After losing their openers Imamul Haq and Abdullah Shafique, the tourists had a score of 24 for two at the end of the match at Galle.
At the end of play, Pakistan trailed by 198 runs, and Azhar Ali was batting at third base and Babar Azam was batting at first.

On a track that was supposed to favour spinners, left-arm fast bowler Afridi stood out with figures of 4-58, but Dinesh Chandimal’s aggressive 76 and The hosts’ score was close thanks to a late cameo of 36 from Maheesh Theekshana.

The appeal of Test cricket, according to Afridi, is that occasionally tailenders and lower-order batters pass for legitimate batsmen.

“The final few batsmen batted well, but we [had] to get them out around 150-160. Chandimal performed admirably. The hosts were in trouble at 133-8, but they added 89 runs for the final two wickets, highlighted by a 44-run stand between Theekshana and Chandimal, who both smashed ten fours and a six.

Biden offers to comfort to US commitment to the region from Arab leaders

JEDDAH

President Joe Biden advocated for a regional security alliance that would include Israel at an Arab Summit on Saturday, saying that the United States would remain firmly committed to its allies in the Middle East and was “not going anywhere.”

Biden presented his vision and strategy for America’s engagement in the Middle East, which was the first stop on his first trip to the region as president after a stop in Israel.

image 300

He also aimed to include Israel in a new axis that was largely motivated by shared worries about Iran during the meeting in Jeddah.

“Since Israel needs to have strong air and missile defense capabilities, we think it is very valuable to include as many of the regional capabilities as we can. However, we are having bilateral discussions with these countries “Reporters were told by a senior administration official.

Joe Biden

biden

Biden has downplayed a meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in favor of concentrating on the upcoming summit with six Gulf states, Egypt, Jordan, and Iraq. Because of violations of human rights, that encounter received criticism in the United States.

“Even the United States can’t get everything right all the time, let alone most of the time. But our greatest asset is our people. Our nations become stronger when they have the courage to learn from their mistakes “said Biden.

“So let me sum up everything I’ve said in one sentence. The United States is committed to working with all of you to create a bright future for the area, and it has no intention of leaving.”

In response to the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi by Saudi agents in 2018, Biden had threatened to make Saudi Arabia a “pariah” on the international stage. However, he ultimately came to the conclusion that US interests required a recalibration, not a rupture, in relations with the top oil exporter.

image 303

The US president claimed that he had brought up the murder of Jamal Khashoggi with the Saudi crown prince on Friday and that remaining silent is “inconsistent with who we are and who I am.”

According to a Saudi official, the crown prince told Biden that while Saudi Arabia has taken steps to prevent mistakes like the murder of Khashoggi from happening again, the United States has also made mistakes, including in Iraq.

The official quoted the de facto ruler of the kingdom as saying that attempting to impose particular values through force on other nations could backfire in a statement sent to Reuters about the two leaders’ conversation on Friday.

At a time when crude prices are high, there are other issues relating to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and Biden supports efforts to put an end to the Yemen war where a temporary truce is in effect, he needs the support of the largest member of OPEC, Saudi Arabia. Washington also wants to lessen China’s global influence and Iran’s hold on the region.

food safety

According to the Egyptian presidency, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Biden spoke about energy supply disruptions and food security during their meeting.

In the early months of the Biden administration, relations between Egypt and the United States were tense due to disagreements over human rights. However, Egypt’s efforts to mediate a ceasefire in Gaza in May 2021 prompted reengagement.

According to a second senior administration official, Biden would reveal that the US had pledged $1 billion in new short- and long-term food security assistance for the Middle East and North Africa and that the Gulf States would contribute $3 billion over the following two years to projects that would support US partnerships in international infrastructure and investment.

Gulf States

Gulf states, who have resisted siding with the West against Russia over Ukraine, are looking for a firm US commitment to ties that have gotten tense due to a perceived US withdrawal from the region.

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are dissatisfied with US restrictions on arms sales and with their exclusion from indirect US-Iran negotiations to revive the 2015 nuclear agreement, which they view as flawed because it does not address regional concerns about Tehran’s missile programme and behaviour.

Israel, which shares their concerns about Iran, supported Biden’s visit to the country in the hopes that it would promote rapprochement between Saudi Arabia and Israel as part of a broader Arab reconciliation after the UAE and Bahrain established ties with Israel through US-brokered agreements that had Riyadh’s approval.

More overflights to and from Israel will be possible thanks to Saudi Arabia’s announcement on Friday that it will open its airspace to all airlines.

A plan to link air defence systems may be difficult to sell to Arab nations that do not have diplomatic ties with Israel and are wary of joining an alliance that is perceived as hostile to Iran, which has established a powerful network of proxies throughout the region, including in Iraq, Lebanon, and Yemen.

Rana Sanaullah Khan, the interior minister, issued a warning to the PTI leadership on Saturday not to interfere with the peaceful by-election process in Punjab.

If anyone tries to undermine the authority of the state by engaging in illegal activities, he warned, “the law will take its due course.”

The interior minister specifically warned PTI Chairman Imran Khan in his warning.

A plea seeking permission for appointing polling agents hailing from outside the concerned constituency is part of the conspiracy, Sanaullah added

He informed Khan and the PTI’s tiger force to adhere to the law, saying that Khan “has lost elections and is preparing to fight with the masses.”

The interior minister attacked the PTI and claimed that the group was planning fights between Pakhtoon and Punjabi brothers. Pervez Khattak, Asad Qaiser, Ali Muhammad Khan, and Murad Saeed of the PTI were accused by him of providing shelter to the “miscreants.”

Khan would be held accountable for the results, he said, adding that the government would not permit the PTI tigers to steal the votes of the voters in the 20 constituencies.

He promised to make tomorrow’s by-elections in the province fair and orderly.

It is important to note that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has established specialised control rooms at the federal and provincial levels to oversee the by-elections that will take place in 20 Punjab Assembly constituencies tomorrow.

The control rooms will continue to operate until the compilation of the polling results, according to the ECP.

In the control rooms, returning officers, pertinent Deputy Commissioners, police, Rangers, and Pakistan Army representatives will be on hand to handle any emergencies.

Election-related complaints will be quickly resolved by the control rooms.

Saudi Arabia and the US agree that Iran cannot get nuclear weapons

image 299

JEDDAH: During US President Joe Biden’s visit to Saudi Arabia, the US and Saudi Arabia agreed on the significance of preventing Iran from “acquiring a nuclear weapon.” According to the statement, Biden reaffirmed the United States’ ongoing commitment to aiding “Saudi Arabia’s security and territorial defence” and assisting the country in acquiring the tools it needs to protect its citizens and territory from foreign threats.

The top Shia and Sunni Muslim nations in the Middle East, Tehran and Riyadh, cut ties in 2016 over their support of opposing factions in proxy battles taking place throughout the region, from Yemen to Syria and other places.

Iran

Iran’s meddling in “the internal affairs of other countries, its support for terrorism through its armed proxies, and Saudi Arabia and the United States warned in the statement that “its attempts to undermine the peace and stability of the region” needed to be further deterred.

Both parties emphasised the significance of ensuring the unhindered flow of business across vital international waterways including the Strait of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandab. In exchange for relief from economic sanctions, Iran inked an agreement in 2015 with six major powers to restrict its nuclear programme to make it more difficult to develop a weapon.

After a 4.5-month hiatus, Pakistan’s COVID-19 death toll reached double digits in a single day, according to NIH data released on Saturday.

The NIH reports that 10 deaths have been reported in Pakistan in the last 24 hours, which is the most since 11 deaths were reported on March 4.

22,451 COVID-19 diagnostic tests were performed nationwide over the course of the previous 24 hours, and 737 of those results were positive, for a positivity ratio of 3.28 percent.

According to NIH, 189 COVID-19 patients are still in critical condition and receiving treatment at various hospitals.

Experts blame two sub-variants of the Omicron variant, namely BA.4 and BA.5, for the recent rise in COVID-19 cases in Pakistan, saying that they have escape mutations that are giving them an edge.

They say the sub-variants have also been infecting people who are already vaccinated or have already been infected with COVD-19, but no evidence is available to show if they are causing any severe disease among the vaccinated.

According to data from the National Institute of Health, Islamabad (NIH), Pakistan reported 779 new infections in a single day, raising the specter of daily COVID-19 cases once more.

On July 9, 732 infections were discovered, which was the last time Pakistan reported more than 700 cases.

Diagnostic testing on 22,099 samples from across the nation led to the discovery of the new infections, raising Pakistan’s COVID-19 positivity rate to 3.53 percent and the overall case count to 1,544,910 in the process.

COVID-19

While 182 patients are still receiving care in critical care units at various hospitals across the nation, two people succumbed to the coronavirus overnight while undergoing treatment. But over the past 24 hours, 1,314 patients also made a full recovery.

The total number of COVID-19 cases that are still active after the latest deaths and recoveries is 9,665.

Due to escape mutations that give them an advantage, experts attribute the increase in COVID-19 cases in Pakistan to two sub-variants of the Omicron variant, known as BA.4 and BA.5.

They claim that the sub-variants have been spreading to individuals who have already received a vaccination or who have already contracted COVD-19, but there is no proof that these individuals are developing a serious illness as a result of the sub-variants.

At GENEVA The head of the World Health Organization bemoaned Tuesday that recent increases in COVID infections show the pandemic is far from over and issued a warning that the virus is in the wild.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed concern over the rising case numbers that were taxing the healthcare system and its staff.

The Omicron sub-variants and the lifting of control measures were the primary causes of the 30% increase in COVID cases reported to the WHO in the last two weeks.

The virus is still very much active, as evidenced by new waves. We must push back against the virus’s pushes, he insisted.

At a press conference, he stated that as transmission rises, governments must also implement tried-and-true strategies like mask use and better ventilation.

omicron

According to Tedros, “sub-variants of Omicron, like BA.4 and BA.5, continue to drive waves of cases, hospitalizations, and fatalities around the world.”

“Surveillance, including testing and sequencing, has significantly decreased, making it more challenging to assess the impact of variants on transmission, disease characteristics, and the efficacy of preventative measures.”

Additionally, the use of examinations, therapies, and vaccines is ineffective.

He stated that, both in terms of the hospitalization of acute cases and the rising number of people with Long COVID, “the virus is running freely and countries are not effectively managing the disease burden based on their capacity.”

inconsistent and uncertain.
The COVID-19 emergency committee of the WHO convened via video conference on Friday and determined that the pandemic continues to be a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, the most serious warning the organization can issue.

WHO

The recent changes in testing regulations, according to WHO emergency director Michael Ryan, are making it more difficult to identify cases and track the development of viruses.

According to a statement released by the WHO on Monday, the committee emphasized the need to reduce transmission because it would be difficult to predict the effects of a pandemic brought on by a new respiratory virus.

The group expressed worry over sharp testing cuts that would lead to less surveillance and genomic sequencing.

This, according to the WHO, “hinders assessments of currently circulating and emerging variants of the virus,” making it harder to decipher trends in transmission.

According to the committee, the course of viral evolution and the traits of newly emerging variants are still “uncertain and unpredictable.”

According to the report, there is a greater chance of “new, fitter variants emerging, with varying degrees of virulence, transmissibility, and immune escape potential” if there are no measures in place to stop the spread of the disease.

Boost boost
For older people and other vulnerable groups, the WHO’s European office advised a second booster dose of the COVID vaccine.

President’s resignation has been accepted, according to the Sri Lankan speaker

image 289

The crisis-ridden country’s house speaker announced on Friday that the president’s resignation had been accepted after he told him from Singapore that he was leaving the country earlier this week.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa

Gotabaya Rajapaksa, often referred to as “The Terminator” for his merciless suppression of Tamil separatists, has officially announced his resignation, becoming the first head of state in Sri Lanka .

He flew to Singapore from the Maldives, where he had initially fled when protesters overran his palace at the weekend, and submitted his resignation through email. A tiny throng gathered late on Thursday to celebrate his resignation at a seaside avenue that has served as the centre of the protest movement that forced him out.

Rajapaksa resigned from power after months of unrest over what his critics claimed was his bad management of the island nation’s economy, which led to significant misery for its 22 million residents.
