criticises China following booster rocket’s uncontrolled return to Earth

By humaira

A Chinese booster rocket made an uncontrolled return to Earth on Saturday, leading US officials to chide Beijing for not sharing information about the potentially hazardous object’s descent.

US Space Command “can confirm the People’s Republic of China (PRC) Long March 5B (CZ-5B) re-entered over the Indian Ocean at approx 10:45 am MDT on 7/30,” the US military unit said on Twitter.

“We refer you to the #PRC for further details on the reentry’s technical aspects such as potential debris dispersal+ impact location,” it said.

In a statement posted to its official WeChat profile, the China Manned Space Agency later gave coordinates for an impact area in the Sulu Sea, about 35 miles (57 kilometers) off the east coast of the Philippines’ Palawan Island.

“Most of its devices were ablated and destroyed during re-entry,” the agency said of the booster rocket, which was used last Sunday to launch the second of three modules China needed to complete its new Tiangong space station.

Malaysia’s space agency said it detected rocket debris burning up on re-entry before falling in the Sulu Sea northeast of the island of Borneo.

“The debris of the rocket caught fire while entering the Earth’s airspace and the movement of the burning debris also crossed Malaysian airspace and could be detected in several areas including crossing the airspace around the state of Sarawak,” it said.

NASA criticism

NASA administrator Bill Nelson criticized Beijing on Twitter, saying the failure to share details of the rocket’s descent was irresponsible and risky.

“All spacefaring nations should follow established best practices, and do their part to share this type of information in advance,” Nelson wrote, “to allow reliable predictions of potential debris impact risk, especially for heavy-lift vehicles, like the Long March 5B, which carry a significant risk of loss of life and property.”

He added: “Doing so is critical to the responsible use of space and to ensure the safety of people here on Earth”.

The Tiangong space station is one of the crown jewels of Beijing’s ambitious space program, which has landed robotic rovers on Mars and the Moon, and made China only the third nation to put humans in orbit.

The new module, propelled by the Long March 5B, successfully docked with Tiangong’s core module on Monday and the three astronauts who had been living in the main compartment since June successfully entered the new lab.

When China launched its first Tiangong module in April 2021, there was a similar frenzy around the possibility of damage caused by an unpredictable booster reentry.

Objects generate immense amounts of heat and friction when they enter the atmosphere, which can cause them to burn up and disintegrate. But larger ones such as the Long March-5B may not be destroyed entirely.

In 2020, debris from another Chinese rocket fell on villages in the Ivory Coast, causing structural damage but no injuries or deaths. China has poured billions of dollars into space flight and exploration as it seeks to build a program that reflects its stature as a rising global power

Stay or go? Parents agonise as shells fall on Ukraine’s Bakhmut

by humaira

Bakhmut: Four-year-old Tanya started in her mother’s arms, eyes wide open, as the boom of artillery fire echoed around the battered frontline Ukrainian town of Bakhmut.

download 15 4

Olena has been inventive so far to try to hide the truth of what is happening from her curly-haired daughter, but her creativity is running dry.

“Sometimes I just turn the volume on the TV louder… If I constantly tell the child that this is war I will disturb her mind. But I think she understands,” she told AFP.

“During recent shelling there was (a) blast of shrapnel. Later I was talking with my husband about going to get humanitarian aid and the child asked if there will be shrapnel there,” Olena added.

Bakhmut — one of the few remaining cities under Ukrainian control in the Donetsk region — is now at the centre of Russia’s brutal offensive in the east of the country.

download 17 4

Taking it would give Russia control of a strategic highway and supply route, opening the road towards regional hub Kramatorsk.

Olena’s family is one of the few to have stayed together with their children in Bakhmut, now only around six kilometres (four miles) from Russian positions.

The streets are now all but deserted, with daily life in what was once a small, leafy town shattered by tanks rolling down the street and the constant roar of artillery exchanges.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday urged all of the remaining 200,000 civilians still living in Ukrainian-controlled areas of the battleground region to get out as soon as they can.

“The more people who leave Donetsk region now, the fewer people the Russian army will kill,” he said.

Kyiv has announced a mandatory order to evacuate and say they aim to ferry people out ahead of the winter as gas pipes for heating have been cut due to the fighting.

But most of those refusing to leave Bakhmut share a common story: too poor, too sick, too old to start over in a new place.

“My husband’s mother is bedridden for five years already and we can’t leave her,” explained Olena.

Ekaterina and her three children, aged eight, six and two, waited for a bus at an evacuation point in Bakhmut.

Teary-eyed, they were saying farewell to their husband and father Artiom, who will remain in Bakhmut “because somebody has to”.

A bandage covered part of Ekaterina’s cheek, while her back was dotted with bruises and scratches, all from shrapnel.

“We expected everything to be alright and that’s why we waited for so long. But it’s not. I still see a future for my children here because one day the situation will be stable again,” Artiom said.

In the town centre, Olena, her husband and their daughter hop on the small red scooter they all share to move around, with small Tanya first in row.

“There is nothing more to capture here. When (the Russians) will come to take it everything will be destroyed,” she said.

“Who will rebuild it? How many years will be necessary for our children to rebuild everything?”

After the collapse of lender Celsius, cryptocurrency customers ask for their money back

image 985

A farmer in Ireland who could lose his land. An American who is contemplating suicide. The life savings of an 84-year-old widow were lost: People who were affected by the cryptocurrency lender Celsius’s collapse are appealing for their money back.

Hundreds of letters filled with rage, guilt, despair, and frequently regret have flooded in to the judge managing the company’s multibillion-dollar bankruptcy. The client whose letter was unsigned stated, “I understood there were hazards.” “It felt like a risk worth taking.”

The platform was promoted by Celsius and its CEO Alex Mashinsky as a secure location where users could store their cryptocurrency in exchange for a high rate of interest while the company lent out and invested those deposits.

However, when the value of extremely volatile cryptocurrencies fell—bitcoin alone has lost over 60% of its value since November—the company encountered more and more issues until it decided to halt withdrawals in the middle of June.

Morocco’s king reiterates openness to restoring ties with Algeria

by Humaira

Rabat:  Morocco’s King Mohammed VI used an address on Saturday to “once again” reiterate his openness to restoring ties with Algeria, which broke off diplomatic relations with Rabat last year.

download 13 5

“We aspire to work with the Algerian presidency so that Morocco and Algeria can work hand in hand to establish normal relations between two brotherly peoples,” Mohammed said during the traditional speech marking the anniversary of his accession to the throne.

“I stress once again that the borders that separate the Moroccan and Algerian brothers will never be barriers preventing their interaction and understanding.”

He urged Moroccans to “preserve the spirit of fraternity, solidarity and good neighbourliness towards our Algerian brothers”.

Morocco and Algeria have long been at odds over the disputed territory of Western Sahara, where the Algiers-backed Polisario Front is seeking independence from Rabat’s rule.

Algeria broke off diplomatic relations with Morocco in August 2021, accusing Rabat of “hostile acts”.

download 12 6

The decision was “completely unjustified,” Rabat said.

The disputed status of Western Sahara — a former Spanish colony considered a “non-autonomous territory” by the United Nations — has pitted Morocco against the Polisario Front since the 1970s.

Rabat, which controls nearly 80 percent of the territory, is pushing for autonomy under its sovereignty.

The Polisario Front, however, wants a UN-sponsored referendum on self-determination.

Morocco’s sovereignty over the territory was backed by Washington in a 2020 deal that also saw Rabat normalise ties with Israel.

Algeria, which supports the Palestinian cause in addition to the Front, has taken the opportunity to criticise Morocco’s growing military cooperation with Israel, which it refers to as the “Zionist entity”.

Referring to “allegations that Moroccans insult Algeria and Algerians”, Mohammed said they were the work of “irresponsible individuals who are trying to sow discord”.

“This gossip about Moroccan-Algerian relations is totally senseless and frankly appalling,” he added.

The king also used Saturday’s speech to pledge reform of the family code in favour of women’s rights, social protections and price controls at a time of rising inflation.

He also pledged to redouble vaccination efforts to fight Covid-19. The reformist king, 58, has ruled Morocco since July 1999, when he succeeded his father, Hassan II.

When Princess Eugenie opted not to wear a veil to her royal wedding to Jack Brooksbank in 2018, it made headlines. The daughter of Prince Andrew, Eugenie, decided to make a statement during her wedding by forgoing the veil, making history as the first royal bride in decades to do so!

In 2018, the princess wed Brooksbank at St. George’s Chapel, wearing a dress by Peter Pilotto and Christopher de Vos with a low-cut back to display the scar from her childhood scoliosis surgery on her spine.

In a previous piece for the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, she described her experience and stated: “Without the care I had at the RNOH, I wouldn’t look the way I do now; my back would be slumped over. Additionally, I wouldn’t be able to discuss scoliosis the way I do now or assist other kids who come to me with the same issue.

US envoy pushes Lebanon-Israel talks over maritime dispute

Beirut:  US envoy Amos Hochstein arrived in Beirut Sunday to push talks to resolve a bitter maritime border dispute between Lebanon and Israel over Mediterranean waters with offshore gas fields.

“Reaching a resolution is both necessary and possible, but can only be done through negotiations and diplomacy,” the US State Department said in a statement ahead of Hochstein’s visit.

Washington’s envoy for global infrastructure and investment is “facilitating negotiations between Lebanon and Israel on the maritime boundary”, the statement added.

download 10 7

Hochstein met with Lebanon’s Energy Minister Walid Fayad on Sunday, and was scheduled to meet with President Michel Aoun and prime minister Najib Mikati the following day.

The maritime border dispute between Lebanon and Israel escalated in early June, after Israel moved a production vessel to the Karish offshore field, which is partly claimed by Lebanon.

The move prompted Beirut to call for the resumption of US-mediated negotiations on the demarcation dispute.

download 9 7

Lebanon and Israel have no diplomatic relations and are separated by a UN-patrolled border.

They had resumed maritime border negotiations in 2020 but the process was stalled by Beirut’s claim that the map used by the United Nations in the talks needed modifying.

Lebanon initially demanded 860 square kilometres (330 square miles) of territory in the disputed maritime area but then asked for an additional 1,430 square kilometres, including part of the Karish field.

Israel claims that the field lies in its waters and is not part of the disputed area subject to ongoing negotiations.

On July 2, Israel said it had downed three drones launched by Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah that were headed towards the gas field.

The powerful Shiite Muslim movement on Sunday released a short video it said showed surveillance of several Israeli-chartered energy infrastructure ships, including the production vessel sent to Karish which is operated by London-listed firm Energean.

Iran-backed Hezbollah’s chief Hassan Nasrallah earlier this month warned that if Lebanon was prevented from extracting oil and gas from its waters, “nobody” would be able to do so, adding that Israeli offshore fields were “under threat” from the group’s missiles. Israel and Hezbollah last fought a devastating war in 2006

Cyclists and spectators hurt in horror crash at Commonwealth Games

by Humaira

London:  English cyclist Matt Walls was involved in a horror crash at the Commonwealth Games on Sunday when he was catapulted over the barriers and into the crowds at the Lee Valley VeloPark.

The Olympic omnium champion, competing in the men’s scratch qualifiers at the London venue, received treatment for more than 40 minutes before being taken away by ambulance.

Spectators were also hurt after he and his bike came over the top of the barriers on the high banking of a corner.

download 8 8

The 24-year-old was trying to avoid riders who had fallen in a crash lower down the banking but as he rode up, he clipped another wheel and went over the top.

Witnesses said that, because of the gradient of the banking, spectators in the front row had been unsighted for the crash. One man received treatment for cuts to his arm while a young girl also received medical attention.

The remainder of the morning session at the velodrome in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park was cancelled and spectators were asked to leave as medical staff attended to Walls.

British Cycling tweeted: “Following a crash in the men’s scratch, Matt Walls & (the Isle of Man’s) Matt Bostock are being treated by medics before being taken to hospital for further treatment.

“We send our best wishes to the riders and spectators involved in the incident, and will provide a further update when we can.”

Walls won omnium gold and madison silver for Team GB at last year’s Tokyo Olympics.

A total of eight riders went down on the last lap of the race, with medics and coaches immediately rushing to help.

An England coach climbed up the banks to reach Walls in the crowd. Most of the events at the Commonwealth Games are being held in Birmingham but the track cycling is taking place in London.

A woman from Islamabad marries a servant to demonstrate true love

image 978

A woman in Islamabad has shown that true love still exists in this day and age, despite the world’s rapid shift towards materialistic values, and she has provided a role model for many other lovers to follow.

Nazia, the woman, had agreed to pay Sufyan Rs. 18,000 per month to assist her with domestic duties. But after observing Sufyan’s demeanour, straightforwardness, and conduct, she fell in love with him and proposed marriage, she said to YouTuber Syed Basit Ali in March of this year.

Recently, the couple’s YouTube video went popular on social media, garnering praise from users for exemplifying true love.Nazia, who resides in the affluent Bahria Town neighbourhood of the federal capital, revealed to the show’s host during her interview that she used to live alone in her home before hiring Sufyan because multiple people had suggested him as a trustworthy house help.

“He was praised by all. His “simplicity captivated my heart,” she added, adding that he never made uncomfortable eye contact with anyone.”

England women’s captain urges Lionesses to seize the day in final

By Humaira

Wembley: England women’s captain Leah Williamson called on the Lionesses to seize the opportunity of a lifetime with the host nation gripped for Sunday’s Euro 2022 final against Germany at Wembley.

A tournament that has smashed attendance records will get a fitting finale with a crowd of 87,000 expected to set a new high for a final at either the men’s or women’s European Championship.

England have never won a major tournament in the women’s game and have waited 56 years for any triumph since the men’s 1966 World Cup.

“Tomorrow is a day of opportunity,” said Williamson on the eve of the game.

“That’s the only thing that makes it any different to any other game, that the stakes are that much higher. But this is what we all live for and this is why I play football.”

311044081d7fa25

Anticipation is reaching fever pitch in a nation where women’s football was banned for nearly 50 years until 1970.

On top of a sold-out Wembley, a crowd of 7,000 is set to congregate to watch the final on big screens in London’s Trafalgar Square.

Outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson paid tribute to the impact Sarina Wiegman’s women will have on the future of the game.

“The pitches and playgrounds and parks of this country will be filled as never before with girls and women who know beyond any shadow of a doubt that football is not just for boys – it really is for everyone,” Johnson wrote in a letter addressed to Wiegman, Williamson and the rest of the England squad.

Wiegman is unbeaten in 19 games since taking charge of England in September.

The reserved Dutch coach has achieved her goal of inspiring a nation, but admitted earlier this week to wanting to hide in her own “bunker” to block out the hype around the final.

“I’m not stupid. I see things happening and it’s really incredible,” said Wiegman. “I really enjoy that too, but then you come back to what your job is, and that’s getting ready for Germany.”

Germany boss Martina Voss-Tecklenburg said all the pressure was on England as they try to deal with the weight of expectation from the home crowd.

Despite the prospect of facing a hostile atmosphere, Voss-Tecklenburg said she would not have wished for the eight-time winners to face anyone other than England in the final.

“We’ve dreamt of this, a final against England at Wembley.

“I don’t know if there is a bigger moment for our players. We want to stay present and embrace everything.”

Tournament organisers UEFA are also under the spotlight after the chaotic scenes around last year’s men’s European Championship final at Wembley and the Champions League final in Paris in May.

England’s men were forced to play a game behind closed doors last month after violent clashes marred the end to Euro 2020 as fans charged the turnstiles in a bid to see the Three Lions’ defeat on penalties to Italy.

A strict no alcohol zone has been put in place around the stadium with fans without tickets strongly urged to not to travel to the stadium. “Whoever comes out on top, England against Germany at the iconic Wembley Stadium will be one for the history books and an unforgettable event for a whole generation,” said UEFA’s head of women’s football, Nadine Kessler.

Debinha gives holders Brazil Copa America Femenina win

Humaira

Bucaramanga: Debinha scored the only goal of the game as favorites Brazil retained their Copa America Feminina title with a 1-0 win over hosts Colombia in Bucaramanga on Saturday night.

It was Brazil’s fourth title in a row — and eighth in nine editions — with Colombia finishing runners-up for the third time in the last four tournaments.

Both sides, though, qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympics and the World Cup in New Zealand and Australia next year.

Third-placed Argentina, who beat Paraguay 3-1 on Friday, also qualified for the World Cup.

The decisive moment in the final came on 39 minutes as Debinha converted a penalty after she had been fouled in the area by Manuela Vanegas.

“It wasn’t the beautiful game, but it was efficient,” said Brazil’s Swedish coach Pia Sundhage.

“Colombia also didn’t have great chances and we kept a clean sheet, I think we were the better team.” Brazil have won every edition of the women’s Copa America except for 2006 when they were pushed into second place by the hosts Argentina.

Hossain stars for Bangladesh before Raza boosts Zimbabwe

By Humaira

Harare :  Bangladesh bowler Mosaddek Hossain wreaked havoc before Zimbabwe batsman Sikandar Raza came to the rescue in Harare on Sunday in the second of a three-match Twenty20 international series.

Zimbabwe recovered from a disastrous start with opener Regis Chakabva out from the first ball of the innings to post 135-8 as they seek to stretch a six-match winning run in the shortest format.

Hossain, who had never taken more than two wickets in a T20 international, captured five for the loss of 20 runs in four overs to leave the hosts reeling at 31-5.

Pakistan-born Raza and Ryan Burl then stopped the rot, adding 80 runs for the sixth wicket as none of five other Bangladesh bowlers could emulate Hossain.

Raza scored 62 off 53 deliveries, including two sixes and four fours, before being caught in the covers by Munim Shahriar off the bowling of Mustafizur Rahman. Apart from Raza, Burl (32) and Luke Jongwe (11 not out) were the only Zimbabwe batsmen to reach double figures.

Women Empowerment and Declining Moral Values

Women Empowerment and Declining Moral Values

Enchanting slogans of modernity and women empowerment are enheartened at all levels in our
society. No society can ameliorate unless its women don’t fervently have a hand in all the
spheres of life. The societies which don’t let women unfold their credentials and make
independent decisions are liquidated. The women must take into account the social fabric, norms
and moral values of the society while taking independent decisions. With the emergence of social
media, slogans of women empowerment and rights of women have been seen to a greater extent
which warranted women to take more decisions independently especially the decision of
choosing their life partners. Asserting the right of this decision challenges the traditional
Pakistani patriarchal society. In liberal segments, this decision is accepted to some extent if the
parents find the person to be befitting and prudent for their daughter. But in rigid and
conservative segments girls become rebellious and prefer to elope when they are unable to break
the stereotype of freewill marriage. In some conservative segments, the rebel girls are even shot
dead but this apprehension doesn’t halt them from taking the bold step of eloping. Things are
changing, the girls are becoming bolder, they are continuously taking steps, they aren’t afraid to
die. They know that they will be killed but even then they are taking these steps because they
can’t conform to the values of their parents. They are girls of the modern age, said the former
resident director of Aurat Foundation. The same thing happened in recent Dua Zahra’s case. Dua
Zahra is a teenage girl from Karachi. She went missing on April 16 after she had gone to dispose
of garbage. Her parents filed a case on April 16 in Sindh High Court of her abduction and her
parents claimed that she was 14 years old. But two days later, she brought to light that she had
eloped from home to get hitched to 21 years old Lahore based Zaheer Ahmad. Her act shattered
her parents and they requested SHC to get their daughter recovered because she gave that
statement of marriage under duress and she had been abducted by Zaheer. Cutting the long story
short, Due Zahra along with her husband appeared in SHC on June 06 and she disclosed to the
court that she wasn’t abducted but she had wedlocked Zaheer with her will. The court ordered to
determine her age and in the medical report it was revealed that she was between 16 and 17
years. The court’s decision was startling. The court authorized Dua Zahra to fix upon her fate
who she wanted to live with. The court didn’t toss around the fact that minimum age for marriage
is 18 years in law and less than 18 is considered as child marriage which is banned. Then how
the court could expect Dua Zahra to make a wise decision in an age which is considered as the
age of mistakes. But we can hope that everything would flow in the right manner and God forbid
Dua might not have to face any repercussions of this decision in her later life. Every person
makes mistakes in his teenage years but if a person doesn’t learn from his teenage mistakes, he
has to face the repercussions in his later life. Dua Zahra is just a single case which got limelight
through social media and news channels. There are numerous cases which are not reported and
the girls who elope from homes for freewill marriages are left abandoned by the persons for
whom those girls put their lives at risk. These girls are left at the mercy of this ruthless society
after the charm of the honeymoon period gets over and the hardships of life get started. The
causes of elopement though not new, are on the rise due to increase in awareness of women
rights, women education, the way the unbridled social media displays the unscrutinized and
unrealistic content of couple goals, consumer market, and globalization. On the other hand, the
gap of communication between children and parents is getting wider due to which children are
unable to share their feelings with their parents especially the daughters. Living in a patriarchal
society, parents while choosing a life partner enforce decisions on their daughters without
considering their consent which paints a bleak picture and daughters become rebellious and find
it better to elope from home for freewill marriage. Parents do so because of the prevailing caste
based marriage system and status quo. So, there are lacunas in parenting as well. On the other
hand, the responsibility lies with the courts as well. If child marriages or marriages less than 18
years of age are banned then why serious action is not taken against such incidents? In our
country, it seems that laws are formulated just to preserve them like holy scriptures in the law
books because they are not implemented in true essence. There is no justification of child
marriages or forced marriages at any stage. These marriages should be declared null and void
regardless of the fact that it is through forced or free will. Besides this, marrying a person of their
own choice is a basic human right but before exercising this right, the girls should keep in mind
the doomsday scenario as well because the repercussions are quite serious. In the early stages of
freewill marriage life seems to be an unending honeymoon but with the passage of time when
conflicts arise on even trivial matters, then the girl is left with no option except repentance. In
many cases, the person for whom a girl becomes a rebel eventually turns out to be an abusive
husband after some period of time. He uses violence against her wife and gives a very absurd
reason for his act by saying that; “ You betrayed your parents, you can betray me as well and
elope with someone else”. At this moment, she finds herself in a stranded ship in the ocean when
this freewill marriage eventually ends up. All the doors are closed for her. She finds no one to go.
If she tries to come back home, she is garnered with such remarks that; “ you are dead for us and
we will assume that you were never born”. Then either she commits suicide or falls into the hell
of prostitution to find refuge. Some girls are killed in the name of honor in conservative
segments like rural Sindh and remote areas of Southern Punjab. But if freewill marriage isn’t
derailed the couple is tempted to be forgiven if they would come back. But they are shot dead.
These killings called karo-kari in Sindhi culture remain a constant threat for girls entering into
freewill marriages. Such cases aren’t even prosecuted because the killer gets escaped when the
family members don’t follow the case. 128 women were killed in Sindh province in the name of
honor in 2021, while 90 women were killed in Punjab province between July-December 2021.
According to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan(HRCP), more than 470 cases of “honor
killing” were reported in Pakistan in 2021. The statistics eventuate a formidable and horrendous
picture of the situation. The need of the hour is to preserve our familial and moral values which
are being degenerated keeping in view the basic human rights and women empowerment as well.
Though freewill marriage isn’t a crime, the girls and their parents should bridge up the
communication gap and if parents find a person responsible and morally strong then they should
value their daughter’s choice. The girl shouldn’t abandon their parents for a guy who she met a
few days/months ago. The state machinery should also come into action against the unrealistic
and unscrutinized content on social media and T.V series. The need of the hour is to preserve our
degenerated moral and familial values so that we might not fall into a blind well if this culture of
elopement continues.

Gyokeres rescues a point for Coventry in Championship

By Humaira

London:  Viktor Gyokeres equalised six minutes from time as Coventry denied Sunderland a win in a 1-1 Championship draw on Sunday.

Sunderland, making their return to English football’s second-tier after a four-year absence, were heading for victory thanks to Jack Clarke’s 12th-minute header at their Stadium of Light ground.

But, after Coventry spent most of the second half camped in the Sunderland half, Sweden striker Gyokeres’s shot into the bottom corner earned the visitors a point.

The bulk of fixtures on the opening weekend of the new season, starting unusually early because of the World Cup in Qatar later this year, took place on Saturday.

Norwich made a losing start on their return to the Championship as they were beaten 1-0 away to Cardiff in a match where both sides had a player sent off.

The Canaries were relegated from the Premier League last season after finishing bottom of the table, but with many pundits predicting they will bounce straight back up.

They fell behind in the Welsh capital early in the second half when Romaine Sawyers scored from 25 yards on his Cardiff debut.

The Bluebirds, however, were reduced to 10 men when Perry Ng was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Norwich could not capitalise on an advantage that, in any case, lasted a mere 12 minutes before captain Grant Hanley was dismissed for a second yellow card.

“We lacked quality in the final third that cost us the game,” said Norwich manager Dean Smith.

Millwall made a strong start to the new season as teenage centre-half Charlie Cresswell marked his debut by scoring twice in a 2-0 win over Stoke.

Hull came from behind to defeat Bristol City 2-1 thanks to Ozan Tufan’s second-half penalty and Jean Michael Seri’s deflected stoppage-time strike after Andreas Weimann had put the Robins in front.

Swansea came from behind to draw 1-1 away to promoted Rotherham.

Chiedozie Ogbene gave Rotherham, second in League One last season, the lead 16 minutes in before Harry Darling equalised before half-time.

Middlesbrough and West Brom also shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw at the Riverside.

Isaiah Jones gave Boro a 10th-minute lead but West Brom boss Steve Bruce saw one of his new signings, John Swift, equalise five minutes after the break, after being played in a cross from another in Jed Wallace.

“The addition of Swift and Wallace in particular helped us,” Bruce said. “We were bottom six last season for goals scored. We needed to address that.”

Friday’s opening match of the new season saw Vincent Kompany’s first competitive game as Burnley manager end in a 1-0 win away to Huddersfield.

The former Manchester City captain was appointed as the permanent successor to the long-serving Sean Dyche last month following Burnley’s relegation from the Premier League.

On-loan Chelsea winger Ian Maatsen marked his debut with the only goal of the game.

“A lot is being made of the style we will be playing this season,” said former Anderlecht boss Kompany. “But we are still Burnley and Burnley will always be about hard work and I saw that in this game.”

Taliban 2.0 & Afghanistan’s Earthquake: The way to cope with the plethora
of challenges

Afghanistan is enduring difficult times these days. It is on the verge of economic collapse. Since
the Taliban have assumed power, they are struggling on the internal and external fronts to cope
with the plethora of challenges. The biggest challenge for them is to cope with the contracting
economy. With every passing day, apprehensions are mounting that it might not reach
bankruptcy. The recent devastating earthquake(6.1 magnitudes) has added more woes to the
already struggling country. Approximately 1000 casualties have been reported and more than
1500 people are injured. Only 17% of hospitals are functioning in Afghanistan which has made it
even more difficult to entertain injured persons properly. Many areas have been badly affected by
this earthquake. There are apprehensions that the death toll could rise because many people are
still missing and they could be under debris. Due to hard mountainous terrain, it is a tedious task
to carry out relief activities in all areas because of the lack of infrastructure. The dilemma is that
the whole of Afghanistan is not properly connected through the road network. When the US
landed in Afghanistan after 9/11, it started making roads. It had planned to connect major cities
of Afghanistan(Mazar-i-Sharif, Kabul, Kandahar, Delaram, and Herat) through the “Afghan Ring
Road Project”. But this plan couldn’t be materialized because the US’ attention got diverted
toward the Iraq War. So, the process of building infrastructure slowed down and it completely
stopped when Obama gave the evacuation plan. Currently, Afghanistan is facing the worst
humanitarian crisis of its history. Due to the freezing of assets of $9.5 billion by the US, the
Taliban are having difficulty running governmental affairs and can’t pay salaries to civil servants.
Before the Taliban assumed power in 2021, 75% of governmental functions were dependent on
foreign aid which was stopped after the withdrawal of the US, because of the apprehensions by
the donor agencies that aid could be used to buy weapons that would consolidate the power of
Taliban. But in all this scenario, the ordinary Afghans are suffering more. The World Food
Program has estimated that 35% of people are facing hunger. According to UNICEF, 3.2 million
children under the age of five are suffering from malnutrition and at least 1 million of these
children could die due to severe acute malnutrition without immediate treatment. The UN has
appealed for $4.5 billion to avert the humanitarian crisis. Currently, this deadly earthquake has
put the Taliban regime in a more complicated situation because relief activities can’t be aligned
on the fast track as Afghanistan lacks a proper disaster management system. The UN
Secretary-General said that the organization has fully mobilized to assist with the deployment of
health teams and supplies. Eight trucks of food and other necessities were sent by Pakistan.
Although the US and the EU have offered assistance in relief activities, the mistrust seems to be
the hurdle in providing economic assistance to the Taliban regime. The Taliban regime is
desperately seeking economic, health, food, and technical assistance from the international
community to cope with the difficult situation. The issue of legitimacy shouldn’t hinder the
international humanitarian assistance for Afghanistan, said an economic expert, Janat Fahim.
Although Pakistan, Iran, UAE, and some other countries have sent supplies to Afghanistan,
which isn’t enough keeping in view the magnitude of the situation. Keeping aside all the
international assistance, the real responsibility lies with the Taliban if they veritably want to be
the legitimized rulers of Afghanistan and want to bring change in the lives of ordinary Afghans
then they will have to shun their old tactics. Though they claim themselves as Taliban
2.0(reformed Taliban), on-ground reality depicts another side of the story. They are still the same
hardliners with the old stringent ideology of curbing human rights, restricting women to homes,
infringing their right to education, restricting them to travel alone, curbing media freedom, and
threatening revenge killings against political rivals. To deal with the issue of international
recognition, firstly they should realize to be legitimized internally. They can do so by forming an
inclusive government. They should resolve the disputes with the NRF of Panjshir valley. They
should also resolve their internal differences. The Haqqani network should align itself with the
Durrani group. The Durrani group, being more rational, took part in the Doha deal. They also
propose to form an inclusive government but the Haqqani network led by Sirrajuddin Haqqani,
the interior minister of Afghanistan, considers war as the sole option for every problem. It might
be possible that the Haqqani network is the main hindrance to forming an inclusive government.
Unless the Taliban mend their ways, it is unlikely that they would be able to get international
recognition and financial help from international financial institutions and donor agencies
because of their chequered past in which they violated all the international laws regarding
international relations and human rights. Furthermore, the Taliban shouldn’t let anyone use their
soil to launch terrorist activities. In recent days, several attacks occurred in Pakistan. These
attacks were carried out by proscribed TTP based in Afghanistan. Taliban must realize that these
attacks would deteriorate their relations with neighbors including Pakistan, China, Iran, and
CARs. They should engage themselves with neighbors to bring a positive change in the lives of
ordinary Afghans. They should appeal to the professionals to move back to the country so that
they may incorporate in the development of the country. Taliban should prioritize governance as
their top agenda. They must ensure the right man for the right job. A religious cleric won’t be
able to manage a technical institution with zero knowledge. Taliban should be part of CPEC
which will pave the way to bring Afghanistan out of the quagmire as developing infrastructure
would help installation of the industry. Till now, Afghanistan’s woes have been ramping up and
the recent earthquake has compounded the more woes. If the Taliban follow up on these
measures, they will be able to win the international community’s trust and ultimately they would
be recognized as well. Alienating this roadmap wouldn’t benefit them and Afghanistan would
face more catastrophic consequences. At the end of the day, it will affect the ordinary Afghan
people who could be used by terrorist organizations.

A gang of defendants in the Dua Zahra case, according to the defence attorney

image 968

Jibran Nasir, a social activist and the attorney in the well-known Dua Zahra case, has declared that he would refer to the number of defendants as “a gang.”Jibran declared: “Four people make up a family: two parents, two kids. A squad has 16 members as opposed to a team’s 11 members. However, 34 persons have been named as suspects in this case by the police.

I believe a group of 34 people would be referred to as a gang “explained he.Jibran explained the rationale behind his demand that Zahra be transferred from Lahore to the Darul Aman in Karachi, explaining that he did so since her parents reside in the same city.In order for the girl’s parents to be able to provide her demands, he suggested that the shelter home be located in Karachi rather than Lahore.

It should be emphasised that Dua was relocated to Lahore from the shelter home in Karachi at the lawyer’s request.Jibran, who was speaking about the current amenities offered to the adolescent in Darul Aman, said that the aforementioned shelter house was a Sindh government pilot project and offers the child the necessary amenities and security.

Miftah Ismail plans to use electricity bills to overcome retailers’ objections to tax collection

image 963

Finance Minister Miftah Ismail offered certain solutions to appease small retailers after facing opposition from traders regarding the collection of taxes via electricity bills and pleas from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz Sharif.

“The Prime Minister also contacted me and gave me instructions to make sure that small business owners are happy with the new tax law. I’ll take care of this tomorrow,” the minister tweeted.According to the finance minister, the government will “exclude stores with invoices of less than 150 units” from the tax in order to allay the worries of small shopkeepers.

“Even shops who are not registered with the Federal Board of Revenue would be charged Rs 3,000,” (FBR).The tax will be fully and definitively paid. No tax notices would be sent to businesses, and FBR officers won’t visit their stores, the finance minister tweeted.

Ismail was reacting to a tweet from Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), who requested him to “withdraw tax on power bill” since businessmen were fretting and grumbling.

Diesel to go up and decrease in petrol prices hike expected

Diesel to go up and decrease in petrol prices hike expected about Rs. 11

image 957

ISLAMABAD: This weekend, the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) is predicted to increase by about Rs. 8 per litre, while the price of gasoline is predicted to decrease by about Rs. 11 due to an outstanding precondition of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for an increase in the petroleum development levy (PDL).

high-speed diesel

This will support Pakistan’s request for the $1.18 billion disbursement when the IMF executive board discusses it on August 24.

High-speed diesel

Senior government officials told that although the prices of the two main petroleum products, HSD and gasoline, were scheduled to decrease significantly starting on August 1, three key factors—currency depreciation, higher PDL, and increased dealer commission—kept consumers from taking advantage of the global price reduction.diesel

The government, according to these officials, agreed in advance with the IMF to raise PDL by Rs. 10 per litre on HSD, kerosene, and light diesel oil (LDO), and by Rs. 5 per litre on gasoline, to ensure a uniform rate of Rs. 15 per litre on all products at the beginning of August. PDL is currently Rs 10 per litre for gasoline and Rs 5 for HSD, kerosene, and LDO.

image 959

The ECC has already approved a 43 percent increase in dealers’ commission on gasoline and a 70 percent increase on HSD, both of which will cost an additional Rs2.10 and Rs2.87 per liter for gasoline and HSD, respectively. The consumer relief that would have otherwise been provided by the currency depreciation due to international prices

As a result, it is predicted that the HSD’s ex-depot sale price will be close to Rs244 for the first two weeks of August instead of Rs236 per liter at present and that the price of gasoline will be close to Rs219 per liter as opposed to slightly more than Rs230 at present.

image 960

According to the official, the government could have transferred the increase in the HSD rate to gasoline and kept POL product prices flat for the ensuing 15 days, but this may not have been an option due to IMF restrictions.
