President Xi Jinping is expected to be elected to a third term as the general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), making him the country’s most powerful leader since Mao Zedong. The CCP Congress began on Sunday.
The CCP is in charge of the one-party state, making the general secretary’s position the most crucial. In addition to those positions, Xi is also the nation’s president and the chairman of the CCP Central Military Commission.
Xi will receive approval from the congress to continue serving as general secretary and head of the CCP’s Central Military Commission. At the annual meeting of the Chinese parliament in March 2023, Xi’s term as president will be extended.
