The Ukrainian Air Force and other parts of the Defense Forces of Ukraine destroyed 223 of these types of UAVs after the first Shahed-136 kamikaze drone built in Iran was shot down on Ukrainian soil on September 13.
President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen stated on Wednesday that Russia’s missile and drone assaults on power plants and other infrastructure in Ukraine are “acts of pure terror” that qualify as war crimes.
“We witnessed Russia’s deliberate strikes on infrastructure used by civilians once more yesterday. This marks the beginning of yet another brutal chapter in the conflict. The rules of the global system are pretty clear. In an address to members of the European Parliament, von der Leyen referred to these as war crimes.
On Monday, Russia launched a large number of “kamikaze” drones into Ukraine, damaging electricity infrastructure and killing five people in Kyiv. Because of the loud whirring sound that their engines create when they fly overhead, Ukrainians have given them the moniker “mopeds.”
According to Ukraine, these are Iranian-made Shahed-136 attack drones, which are loitering weapons that travel at a slow speed toward their target before exploding upon impact. Due to their usage on Tuesday, Kiev took action to sever ties with Iran.
The Kremlin has not responded, and Teheran claims to have supplied the drones to Moscow. According to Washington, Iran’s denial is false.
