The largest economy in Europe will get liquefied natural gas by the end of December thanks to an agreement between German utility RWE and Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), RWE stated on Sunday.
Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February, Germany, which was previously reliant on Russian gas, has been looking to diversify its energy sources.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz made the statement on the second day of a two-day visit to the Gulf area in an effort to secure alternative energy supplies.
Before the agreement was made official, Scholz told reporters that “we need to make sure that LNG production in the globe is progressed to the point that the enormous demand that is currently there can be supplied without having to resort to the production capacity that is present in Russia.”
According to RWE, the LNG supply, which will be 137,000 cubic metres, will be the first to be sent to a floating LNG terminal in Brunsbuettel, which is close to Hamburg.
According to a statement from RWE, “this represents a key milestone in developing an LNG supply infrastructure in Germany and setting up a more diversified gas supply.”
Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the president of the UAE, and Scholz inked a contract aimed at boosting industrial development and energy security.
ADNOC has also secured an unknown amount of LNG cargos for Germany in 2023, according to a report published on Sunday by the official Emirates News Agency WAM.
Scholz left Abu Dhabi for Qatar following his meetings there. He spoke with Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Saturday in Jeddah.
