On Sunday, a devastating incident occurred during an Indian Air Force show in Chennai, leading to the deaths of at least five individuals due to suspected heat stroke. The event, commemorating the air force’s 92nd anniversary, was held at Marina Beach, one of the world’s longest beaches, and attracted a staggering crowd of approximately 1.5 million people.
The weather on that day was sweltering, with the maximum temperature soaring to 35°C (95°F), as reported by the local weather department. Attendees reported that the heat and humidity were overwhelming, exacerbated by a lack of adequate water supply at the event. Chandramohan, a software engineer who attended the air show, shared his experience, stating, “There was no water supply at the function despite the hot and humid weather.” He observed several people fainting from heat and dehydration, highlighting the event’s unsafe conditions.
The situation worsened during the exit from the event, with attendees facing severe congestion on the roads as buses and vehicles became stuck in traffic. Many found it challenging to leave the area, leading to further distress amid the already uncomfortable conditions.
Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister M.K. Stalin addressed the tragedy, attributing the deaths to “extreme heat and various medical reasons.” He acknowledged that although organizers had made efforts to manage the large crowd, the turnout exceeded expectations, resulting in inadequate arrangements. “Next time such big events are organized, more attention and arrangements will be made,” he stated, emphasizing the need for improved planning in the future.
State Minister for Medical and Family Welfare Ma Subramanian also responded to the situation, noting in a post on X that the government had deployed medical teams, security personnel, temporary toilets, and drinking water supplies for the event. Despite these measures, the extreme conditions proved detrimental for some attendees.
The Indian Air Force officials were not immediately available for comment regarding the incident and the measures taken during the event. This tragic event serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and safety protocols, especially during large gatherings in adverse weather conditions. As investigations continue, there are calls for better planning to prevent such unfortunate incidents in the future, ensuring the safety and well-being of all attendees.
