- TOUGH NIGHT FOR BUNNY SHAW AS USA CLINCH WORLD CUP SPOT
- Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw endured a difficult night, as Jamaica suffered a 5-0 loss at the hands of the United States.
- The City forward completed 63 minutes of the CONCACAF clash but could not prevent her side from falling to defeat against the World Champions, who clinched qualification to the 2023 World Cup, thanks to Haiti’s win over Mexico.
Former Blue Rose Lavelle was on the scoresheet in Monterrey, adding the third of the night for the Stars and Stripes just before the hour, after Sophia Smith had bagged a brace inside eight minutes.
A Kristie Mewis penalty and Trinity Rodman effort added further gloss the scoreline late on.
The defeat leaves Jamaica needing a victory over Haiti when the pair lock horns on Tuesday 12 July (03:00 UK time), due to Haiti’s superior goal difference.
Speaking after the USA game, captain Shaw says her side must put the setback behind them.
“In the beginning of the game, we came out flat,” she admitted. “Once the USA scored the two goals, it killed our momentum a little bit.
“As the game went on, we tried to get back into the game but obviously they kept on scoring.
“This game is gone. We have to look forward to the next game against Haiti. We have to try to go back to score one.
“We need to start from the beginning [with the level] that got us the three points in the first game and come out with that same momentum, grind and grit against Haiti.”
