In a recent series of operations, Pakistan’s security forces have successfully neutralized multiple terrorists across different regions, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Dera Ismail Khan, and North Waziristan. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) reported on Monday that these actions were part of a broader strategy to combat terrorism and ensure national security.
Mohmand District Operation
In the Mohmand district, a joint intelligence-based operation led to the elimination of three terrorists. The ISPR identified one of the terrorists as “Kharji alias Qari of Fitna Al Khawarij.” This operation not only neutralized the terrorists but also led to the busting of their hideout. A significant cache of arms, ammunition, and explosives was recovered from the site. Tragically, during the exchange of gunfire, police constable Abrar Hussain from Swabi embraced shahadat (martyrdom). His sacrifice was highlighted as a testament to the bravery and dedication of the security personnel involved.
Dera Ismail Khan Operation
Another critical operation took place in Dera Ismail Khan, where security forces targeted a location associated with terrorists. The operation resulted in the death of Sifatullah Mullah Mansoor, a member of “Fitna Al Khawarij.” Sifatullah was known for his involvement in several terrorist activities, including a suicide bombing attack in Daraban on December 12, 2023. The engagement also injured three other terrorists. This operation underscores the ongoing efforts to dismantle terrorist networks and bring those responsible for violence to justice.
North Waziristan Engagement
In North Waziristan, a separate engagement led to the elimination of another terrorist linked to “Fitna Al Khawarij.” This operation highlights the continuous vigilance and effectiveness of security forces in addressing terrorist threats in the region.
Recent Trends and Strategic Responses
The recent operations are part of a larger strategic campaign named “Azm-e-Istehkam,” launched by the federal government to address the surge in terrorism, particularly in KP and Balochistan. This campaign is a renewed effort under the National Action Plan to strengthen anti-terrorism measures and improve security across Pakistan.
The second quarter of 2024 has seen a significant uptick in violence, with 380 fatalities and 220 injuries reported from 240 incidents of terror attacks and counter-terror operations, according to a Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) Annual Security report. Among these fatalities, 236 were civilians and security personnel. The bulk of these incidents occurred in KP and Balochistan, which together accounted for nearly 92% of all fatalities and 87% of the attacks. KP alone suffered 67% of the fatalities, while Balochistan faced 25%.
The Path Forward
The recent operations by security forces, including the operations in Mohmand, Dera Ismail Khan, and North Waziristan, reflect a concerted effort to counter terrorism and secure Pakistan’s borders. The sacrifices made by personnel like Constable Abrar Hussain are a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges and the commitment required to maintain peace and stability.
The strategic campaign “Azm-e-Istehkam” aims to bolster national security and address the resurgence of terrorism. The high levels of violence reported in KP and Balochistan indicate the significant challenges faced by security forces, but also highlight their continued resolve to combat terrorism effectively.
As Pakistan navigates through these security challenges, the coordination between different law enforcement agencies and the military, along with the implementation of robust counter-terrorism strategies, will be crucial in restoring and maintaining peace across the nation.
