At first sight, what appears to be a scene from a nightmare or a popular horror film is actually a close-up photograph of an ant taken by Lithuanian photographer Dr. Eugenijus Kavaliauskas.Under a microscope, the image is zoomed in five times to see the creature’s gloomy visage and scary crimson eyes.
The photograph was chosen as one of the 57 “Images of Distinction” in the Nikon Small World Photomicrography Competition.Grigorii Timin won the competition’s top honour for his image of a Madagascar gigantic day gecko’s developing hand. Timin successfully captured the Phelsuma grandis day gecko by combining technology and art.The event is held yearly, and according to Eric Flem, Communications and CRM Manager at Nikon Instruments, Nikon Small World receives an abundance of entries.
