In a recent interview with actor-turned-author Twinkle Khanna, beauty queen-turned-actor Sushmita Sen opened up about her life, career, and choice to remain single despite having been disappointed three times in her attempts to get married.
Sushmita, who has famously remained single and defied stereotypes by adopting at 24 years old back in the day, responded, “Khud ko khoya, toh kya paaya,” when asked how she was able to maintain her candour about her relationships at a time when men in the industry would pretend to be “virgins” (We gain nothing by losing ourselves). That has been my guiding principle in life. I simply wanted to learn how to speak my truth and be sincere while doing so… Get over it. Whether you think plastic surgery, having men in my life, relationships, or married men are bad things, they exist.
Fortunately, I’ve met some very interesting men in my life, and the only reason I haven’t wed is because they disappointed me. My children were not involved in any way. If anything, my kids have been very gracious considering that they were never considered. They have shown everyone in my life the same amount of love and respect and have welcomed them with open arms. Watching it is the most beautiful thing ever. I almost got married three times. I was rescued by God each time. I am unable to tell you what misfortunes affected each person’s life. God did indeed keep me safe, but also because God kept these two children safe, he cannot permit me to engage in a messy relationship.
On the set of her first movie, Dastak, Sushmita and director Mahesh Bhatt got into a fight. After the director persuaded her to make the switch to acting after winning Miss Universe in 1994, she was asked to play a version of herself in the movie. Sushmita revealed how Mahesh humiliated her in front of the whole crew, causing her to storm out in rage. But he later revealed to her that everything was a ruse to extract a performance from her.
