People who love watching the sky are in for a treat as they can witness a supermoon in Pakistan today (Thursday), announced Dr. Jawed Iqbal, Director of the Institute of Space Science and Technology and an astronomy expert.
Dr. Iqbal explained that the moon will appear 14% brighter and 7% bigger than normal. “The moon appears relatively larger and brighter when the distance between the moon and Earth decreases,” he said, adding that tonight the distance will be about 226,000 miles.
He also noted that the average distance between the moon and the Earth is typically 238,855 miles. This is the third full moon of the year, and stargazers in Pakistan will be able to enjoy the supermoon after sunset.
According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), a supermoon occurs when the moon’s orbit is closest (perigee) to Earth at the same time the moon is full. This phenomenon makes the moon appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than usual.
The supermoon will continue to showcase its larger-than-average size in the following days, offering an extended opportunity for sky enthusiasts to marvel at this celestial event.
