Tom Moody, a former cricketer for Australia, will step down from his position as Sri Lanka’s director of cricket, according to officials on Monday, just weeks before the T20 World Cup. According to Mohan de Silva, secretary of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), the 56-year-three-year old’s contract is being terminated by “mutual agreement.” Despite possessing savings of almost $40 million, a senior cricket insider who wished to remain anonymous claimed that SLC “could not afford his expenses in the long run.” The insider continued, “We also think we need someone who can spend more time in Sri Lanka and is more hands-on.”
According to the source, the former Test player received $1,850 per day in compensation plus costs for the 100 days per year that he was required to spend in the nation, which is going through its worst economic depression.
Another source predicted that Moody would quit at the end of the month or before the T20 World Cup in Australia begins the following month.
In order to aid in the team’s preparation for the T20 World Cup and the 50-over version in India in 2023, former Sri Lankan head coach Moody was named director of cricket in February of last year.
