When you think about how her family and community failed her, how she probably moved to get away from her ex-husband, and all the ways in which she tried to reach out for help and protect herself, it still wasn’t enough.

The victim wrote on her TikTok account that going through a divorce “feels like you failed at life sometimes as a South Asian Woman. It isolating to be categorised by the community, to not have emotional support, and to feel compelled to stick with someone because of “what people will think.” Women find it more difficult to leave marriages that they shouldn’t have entered in the first place.
“Walking away from someone you once loved is painful. But loving someone who abuses your heart is even more painful.”

Sania Khan, a 29-year-old Pakistani American woman, was open on TikTok about her painful divorce process in the months before she was fatally shot by her estranged husband on Monday. She discussed the backlash she received from her community and family members not only for her decision to leave her marriage, but also for sharing her experience so openly.
“Going through a divorce as a South Asian woman sometimes feels like you failed at life.” “The way the community labels you, the lack of emotional support you receive, and the pressure to stay with someone because ‘what will people say’ is isolating,” Khan wrote on TikTok in June. “It makes it more difficult for women to leave marriages they shouldn’t have been in.”
