Pakistan’s top karateka, Saadi Abbas, has announced his decision to retire from the sport following his participation in the upcoming South Asian Games, which will be held in Pakistan. Abbas, a celebrated figure in karate, has earned gold medals for Pakistan at both Asian and South Asian levels, alongside impressive accomplishments in various international competitions.
His accolades include being a two-time Commonwealth Championship gold medallist, a former Asian champion, and a two-time Asian bronze medallist. Additionally, he has clinched victory at the US Open and secured numerous medals in events like the South Asian Games and Islamic Games.
Speaking in Lahore, Abbas expressed his motivation for competing in the South Asian Games, stating, “As the South Asian Games are taking place in Pakistan, and since I have never performed in front of Pakistani fans at any international competition, my goal is to participate and win a gold medal for Pakistan.” He emphasized that this will be his final appearance in the sport, adding, “And after this, I will say goodbye to Karate.”
Reflecting on his retirement decision, Abbas mentioned that he had considered stepping away from karate due to knee pain prior to the Asian Games. However, he was encouraged by the federation to compete one last time and aim for gold in the South Asian Games. He made a comeback, participating in the Asian Karate Championship in China, where he won his first fight but was eliminated in the second round.
Before the South Asian Games, Abbas plans to compete in the Commonwealth Championship and participate in a few more international events, marking the end of an illustrious career in karate.
