ISLAMABAD: Tuesday, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah announced that he would ask the coalition government and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to support his request for the provision of weapons and ammunition to law enforcement officers deployed to thwart “armed groups” attempting to seize control of the federal capital.
The weapons would be supplied to them for “self-defense,” the interior minister declared during a press briefing. Sanaullah stated that he would make the offer after any potential commotion and unrest as the PTI’s long march near Islamabad.
Referring to the tape leak that allegedly included Ali Amin Gandapur and Kamran Bangash, minister of higher education for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, saying something about “licenced arms,” he added this.
Sanaullah claims that the government has so far opted to only provide rubber bullets and tear gas shells for the police and security personnel to use in the event of an emergency.Speaking to the presser, he continued, “The group or long march intending at invading Islamabad should be prevented.”
