Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, accusing him of creating a system that allows a select few, like business tycoons Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani, to spend extravagant amounts on lavish weddings while many ordinary citizens struggle financially. Speaking at a public rally in Bahadurgarh, Haryana, Gandhi contrasted the recent opulent wedding of Ambani’s youngest son with the plight of farmers in India, highlighting the stark economic disparities.
“Have you seen Ambani’s wedding? He spent crores on it. Whose money is this? It is your money,” Gandhi remarked, criticizing the structural inequality that forces farmers to take loans to afford weddings. He emphasized that while a few can spend lavishly, many families are “drowned in debt” just to celebrate a marriage. “If this is not an attack on the Constitution, then what is?” he questioned.
Gandhi further alleged that PM Modi aids Ambani and Adani in dismantling India’s employment system, subsequently leading to attacks on constitutional principles. He pointed out that while the government waives off loans amounting to Rs 16 lakh crores for billionaires, it fails to provide similar relief to farmers and students, calling this an assault on the Constitution.
This is not the first time Gandhi has criticized Modi for allegedly favoring industrialists through policies that benefit them at the expense of the broader population. In a previous parliamentary session, he claimed that a small number of industrialists controlled the nation’s wealth, using coded references to Adani and Ambani as “A1 and A2” to emphasize their monopolistic hold over the economy.
Gandhi’s remarks highlight the ongoing debate around wealth inequality and government policy in India, as the Congress leader continues to position himself as a champion for the rights of the common citizen against the backdrop of perceived favoritism towards the wealthy elite.
