The Aga Khan Foundation Pakistan (AKF-P) and Special Communications Organisation (SCO) have jointly launched the Nasirabad Software Technology Park in Hunza, Gilgit-Baltistan, marking a significant milestone in the region’s development. This state-of-the-art facility aims to promote sustainable development and boost the local economy by providing a range of essential resources and services.
The park offers uninterrupted power supply, high-speed internet, and co-working space for start-ups, freelancers, and chambers of commerce, creating a conducive environment for innovation and growth. This initiative harnesses the potential of the region’s youth, creates job opportunities, and attracts foreign remittances, contributing to the socio-economic uplift of the area.
The Nasirabad Software Technology Park serves as a central hub, connecting other IT facilities in remote areas of the region, and provides access to distance learning, entrepreneurship and career counseling, digital skills development, and freelance business opportunities. This hub-and-spoke model enables the park to reach a wider audience, fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship in the region.
The launch ceremony was attended by distinguished guests, including Major General Umar Ahmad Shah, Director General of SCO, Sultan Ali Allana, Director of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development and Chairman of Habib Bank Limited, Nizar Mewawalla, President of the Ismaili Council for Pakistan, and Akhtar Iqbal, CEO of AKF-P.
Chairman Sultan Ali Allana expressed his optimism that the new Software Technology Park will strengthen the economy of the region, stating, “The users of this new facility will be reliably connected to businesses in Pakistan and around the world, providing a range of opportunities nationally and internationally, fostering innovation, facilitating the creation of new business networks, and driving economic growth in the region.”
