The general council of the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) ousted Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain as party leader on Thursday when it appeared that there were divisions among the party ranks.
The choice was taken in the course of a party consultation conducted at the Pakistan Muslim League House on Davis Road in Lahore.
Chaudhry Wajahat Hussain, Shujaat’s brother, has been appointed PML-Q leader. At the meeting, Tariq Bashir Cheema, a close adviser to Shujaat, was fired, and Kamil Ali Agha was chosen to serve as the party’s central secretary-general.
The development came days after Shujaat had terminated Chaudhry Parvez Elahi’s basic membership due to his remarks regarding a potential merger with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
According to PML-Q leader and Minister for National Food Security Tariq Bashir Cheema, in response to the most recent action, Shujaat is still the party’s president and has the support of “serious members.”
Cheema stated during a news conference that Shujaat had already suspended Elahi’s membership and that he would explain “why such a drama is taking place” at the appropriate moment.
