WASHINGTON: Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi came to Taiwan on Tuesday with a strong message for China, stating that it is more crucial than ever for the US to support a democratic Taiwan.
Pelosi made history by making the first official trip to Taiwan by a speaker of the House in 25 years, a journey that brought swift censure from Beijing.
Pelosi made a statement shortly after arrival that read, “Our congressional delegation’s visit to Taiwan celebrates America’s unshakable commitment to supporting Taiwan’s vibrant Democracy.”
She continued by saying that the overnight stay and visit by her congressional group were entirely consistent with previous US policy toward Taiwan. According to Pelosi, discussions with Taiwan’s leadership would center on supporting a free and open Indo-Pacific as well as other common interests.
In a statement released as China denounced her visit and warned that it would seriously harm Sino-U.S. relations, Pelosi stated that “America’s solidarity with the 23 million people of Taiwan is more crucial today than ever.”
