According to Pakistan’s prime minister, there was a “assassination attempt” on the country’s top diplomat in Afghanistan at a time when tensions between the two neighbours are already high.
Ubaid Ur Rehman Nizamani, the head of mission, was the target of an attack on the embassy grounds, according to Pakistan’s foreign ministry on Friday.
Pakistani envoy targeted in ‘assassination attempt’ in Afghan capital
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif issued a statement on Twitter strongly denouncing the heinous assassination attempt on the head of Pakistan’s mission in Kabul.
Amir Khan Muttaqi, the foreign minister of Afghanistan, and Hina Rabbani Khar, the foreign minister of Pakistan, met in Kabul to discuss recent border tensions.
The Pakistani envoy was not hurt by the assailant, but his security man was shot and injured, Sharif continued. The condition of the security guy wasn’t immediately known.
Sharif tweeted, “I demand a swift inquiry & action against those responsible for this horrific assault.
The ambassador and the rest of the employees are secure, but out of prudence, we won’t be leaving the diplomatic building, he said.
Nizamani travelled to Kabul last month to assume the position at one of the few embassies that had continued to function after the Taliban seized power in August 2021.
