1,288 Staffers Appointed on Special Duties Under Rain Emergency Plan, Says CBC Spokesperson
KARACHI: In anticipation of the upcoming monsoon season, the Cantonment Board Clifton (CBC) in Karachi has declared a rain emergency and mobilized special teams to ensure timely drainage of rainwater in areas under its jurisdiction.
A CBC spokesperson announced on Saturday that a total of 1,288 staffers have been appointed to special duties as part of the rain emergency plan. This includes 638 personnel assigned to seven sectors specifically for rain emergency tasks, while another 650 staffers will focus on the drainage of rainwater.
The board has identified low-lying areas prone to flooding after heavy downpours. To address this, special teams have been assigned specific tasks in DHA Phase-I to Phase VIII, Clifton Block 8, Block 9, and the market area. The CBC has also planned the deployment of heavy machinery in these affected areas to facilitate the drainage process.
Additional teams will be stationed at key commercial avenues such as Khayaban-e-Shujaat, Khayaban-e-Shehbaz, Khayaban-e-Badar, and Khayaban-e-Tariq. These teams will be equipped with 1,000 to 3,000-gallon water bowsers and powerful pumps to ensure efficient water removal.
The spokesperson emphasized the readiness of the CBC to tackle any emergencies arising from the expected heavy rains, ensuring that all necessary equipment and personnel are in place.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has reported that strong monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal are currently penetrating the upper and central parts of the country. A new westerly wave is also affecting most upper and central regions, bringing potential heavy rains.
Karachi residents have been eagerly awaiting relief from the sweltering temperatures that have recently plagued the city. So far, the city has only experienced light drizzles in some areas, which have slightly improved the weather but have not significantly alleviated the heat.
Earlier today, the PMD noted that despite the prediction of continued hot weather in Karachi, there is a chance of light drizzle at night. The weather in Karachi is expected to remain hot and humid over the next 24 hours, according to the Met Office.
Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz stated earlier this week that Karachi is likely to experience rains after July 8. His remarks align with the PMD’s prediction of “vigorous monsoon activity” in the upper and central parts of the country, driven by strong monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal.
The declaration of a rain emergency and the mobilization of a large number of staffers demonstrate the CBC’s proactive approach to managing the challenges posed by the monsoon season. By focusing on both preventive measures and responsive actions, the CBC aims to mitigate the impact of heavy rains on residents and infrastructure.
The coordinated efforts, including the deployment of heavy machinery and water drainage equipment, reflect the comprehensive planning undertaken by the CBC to address potential flooding and waterlogging issues. This preparation is crucial in ensuring the safety and well-being of Karachi’s residents during the monsoon season.
As the city braces for the expected heavy rains, the efforts of the CBC and other local authorities will be vital in maintaining normalcy and reducing the adverse effects of the monsoon. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about weather updates and follow any advisories issued by the authorities to ensure their safety.
