AMRITSAR: A young man was allegedly killed by a fanatical Sikh sect after being seen chewing tobacco close to the Golden Temple, the religion’s holiest site, according to Indian police, who announced the arrest of three sect members on Friday.
22-year-old Harmanjeet Singh was killed following a fight with three Nihangs, an extreme Sikh warrior sect distinguished by wearing blue robes, wielding swords, and upholding a puritanical moral code.
The three had accused Singh of drinking alcohol and using tobacco, both of which are against the rules of his religion.Arun Pal Singh, the police commissioner in Amritsar, told reporters the next day, “The incident occurred in broad public view.”
