PUNJAB: This weekend, a by-election for 20 assembly seats in the province with the most people will test the popularity of Imran Khan, the former prime minister of Pakistan.
The Punjab vote on Sunday is seen as a possible portent for the national elections that must be held by October of next year, even though Khan has been aggressively campaigning across the country for an early election since being ousted by a no-confidence vote in April.
Twenty seats in Punjab fell vacant when the electoral commission, at Khan’s request, invalidated PTI members who crossed sides. As a result of the planning, the province is currently under the leadership of Hamza Sharif, the prime minister’s son.
According to the story, Khan will be able to assess the success of his campaign’s public relations drive.
Since being removed from office, Khan has gathered sizable audiences to rallies around the country while delivering lengthy speeches about how the US-led conspiracy pushed Pakistan to adopt the present government.
