The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a warning that Karachi and Hyderabad are at risk of urban flooding due to expected heavy rains in Sindh. The authority has advised the provincial disaster management departments and local administrations to closely monitor the situation and take appropriate measures to safeguard the population at risk.
The NDMA’s warning comes as scattered rainfall, windstorms, and thunderstorms are expected in various districts, including Kashmore, Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, Umerkot, Badin, Mithi, Tharparkar, and adjacent areas, within the next 12 to 24 hours. This downpour could result in localized urban flooding and medium-level overflows in nullahs, putting people living in low-lying areas at risk. The authority has urged people dwelling in these areas to take extra caution and undertake emergency preparations given the potential for urban flooding.
The Pakistan Metrological Department (PMD) has also predicted a chance of rain with thunderstorms in the country’s financial hub, Karachi, today. An ongoing monsoon activity is likely to affect the weather in the coming days, according to the Met Office. Moreover, more monsoon currents are likely to penetrate from the Arabian Sea in upper parts of the country from July 10. Residents of Karachi experienced heavy rain and strong winds a day earlier, bringing an end to the persistent heat spell that has gripped the city in recent weeks.
In light of this warning, it is essential for residents of Karachi and Hyderabad to stay informed and follow instructions from local authorities to ensure their safety. The NDMA’s warning highlights the need for preparedness and caution in the face of potential urban flooding. By taking necessary precautions and staying vigilant, the risk of damage and harm can be minimized, and the impact of urban flooding can be mitigated.
