TOKYO: A massive and powerful typhoon projected to produce up to half a metre (20 inches) of rain when it makes landfall on Sunday prompted the Japan Meteorological Agency to encourage residents to leave areas of the southern island of Kyushu on Saturday.
The US Navy’s Joint Typhoon Warning Center has designated Nanmadol as a super typhoon, and it has the potential to cause more damage than any tropical storm to hit Japan in decades.
According to Japan’s weather, large waves and torrential rain are possible in Kagoshima prefecture and other areas of Kyushu, the country’s southernmost main island, as early as Saturday evening.
