On Saturday, according to Iranian state media, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards started an artillery bombardment on anti-Iranian terrorist positions in the Kurdish area of northern Iraq.
According to state television, the Guards attacked “headquarters of anti-Iranian terrorists” stationed in northern Iraq, a reference to Kurdish organisations there.
The majority of Iran’s up to 10 million Kurds reside in the northwest of the nation, and Iran has accused the armed Iranian Kurdish dissidents of being involved in continuous turmoil there.
In a statement shown on television, the Guards stated that “these operations…will continue in order to secure viable border security, punish criminal terrorists, and make officials (of the Kurdish Regional Government) responsible for international norms and their legal obligations.”
Iranian officials have frequently urged the KRG to limit the local Iranian Kurdish parties’ activity. They also assert the presence of Israeli operatives in the area, a claim that is refuted by KRG.
Kurdish rebel organisations in Iraq’s Kurdish area have been regularly attacked by Iran. Iranian security forces and terrorist organisations hostile to the Tehran regime have frequently clashed in the remote and hilly border area.
