DUBAI: In the most recent instance of a violent crackdown on nationwide protests sparked by the death of a young woman in detention, Iranian security forces clashed with students at a prestigious university in Tehran on Sunday, according to reports in state and social media.
The 22-year-old Mahsa Amini’s funeral on September 17 in the Kurdish village of Saqez sparked the first anti-government demonstrations in years, with many demanding for an end to the more than forty years of Islamic clerical rule in Iran.
Sharif University, historically a hub of resistance, was surrounded by dozens of riot police in numerous videos provided by the activist Twitter account 1500tasvir, which has about 160,000 followers.
