A hamlet in India has made the decision to cut back on daily usage of both TV and the internet by a couple of hours each.At 7 o’clock at night, the Maharashtra village sounds a siren to remind inhabitants to turn off their televisions and cellphones. At 8.30 p.m., Vadgaon village in the Sangli district sounds the final siren once more. The two “addiction” instruments can be activated when the village council blasts the siren once again at 8.30 p.m.
According to BBC Hindi, Vijay Mohite, head of the village council, the choice was made on the nation’s Independence Day.Nearly 3,000 people live in the village, the majority of whom work as farmers and mill employees. When online courses replaced traditional classroom instruction, according to Mohite, COVID had made kids dependent on screens. Mohite thinks that because kids are back in school, their screen usage should decrease.
