In reaction to what the West denounced as a fresh escalation in Moscow’s conflict in Ukraine, officials said on Thursday that the European Union is considering an oil price ceiling, more restrictions on high-tech exports to Russia, and harsher penalties against specific individuals.
President Vladimir Putin’s nuclear threats, the declaration of a partial war mobilisation, and backing for preparations to essentially annexe areas of east Ukraine sparked action from the EU’s 27 member states on Wednesday.
New sanctions on Russia were approved by EU foreign ministers at an emergency summit, and the bloc’s top diplomat indicated they will include “economic and individual” measures.
According to CNN, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, stated they will include “new export controls on civilian technologies.”
According to three EU officials in Brussels, additional penalties would revolve around a G7-agreed oil price ceiling.
