A swarm of honey bees launched an attack on approximately 80 schoolchildren at a private school in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, on Monday, prompting emergency medical assistance. The incident occurred in the Bypass area of Kallar Syedan, a tehsil within the Rawalpindi district, during a rally organized by the school.
According to officials, at least 40 of the affected students were taken to Kallar Syedan Hospital for treatment, while rescue teams were called to the scene to assist. Fortunately, all the students have since been treated and sent home. The school administration confirmed that the bees attacked both children and teachers during the event but reassured parents that all students are safe.
Dr. Osama Zia, a general practitioner, offered guidance on what to do in case of a honey bee sting. He emphasized the importance of quickly removing oneself from the area of the attack and then following these steps:
- Remove the Bee: If a bee is still attached, it should be carefully removed from the body.
- Wash the Area: The affected area should be thoroughly washed with plenty of water to clean the wound.
- Apply Cold Compress: Using cold compressions can help reduce swelling and discomfort.
While it is not always necessary to consult a doctor after a bee sting, Dr. Zia recommended seeking medical advice as a precaution. He also warned individuals to be vigilant for signs of severe allergic reactions, such as shortness of breath, swelling of the face, or throat. In cases of such symptoms, immediate medical attention is crucial.
