LONDON: After being the target of a racially insensitive remark said by three-time Formula One world champion Nelson Piquet, Lewis Hamilton stated the “time has come for action” in LONDON.
The governing body of Formula One and motorsport, the FIA, denounced the 69-year-old Brazilian who made the remarks on a podcast.
It’s more than just words, tweeted Hamilton. “These outdated viewpoints must shift because they have no place in our sport.
There has been ample opportunity for learning. The moment has arrived to act.
Hamilton also tweeted in Portuguese, saying, “Let’s work on altering the attitude.”
Piquet, who won the world championship in 1981, 1983, and 1987, used the phrase when describing a collision between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen of Red Bull on the opening lap of the 2017 British Grand Prix.
Verstappen’s partner is Kelly, who is his daughter.
In a statement, Formula One stated that “discriminatory or racial rhetoric is abhorrent in any form and has no place in society.”
“The FIA firmly condemns any racist or discriminatory language and behavior, which have no place in sport or wider society,” the organization stated in a statement.
